Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree
#getgoing2025 Hong Kong residents flocked to Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree in Tai Po on the first day of the Chinese New Year on Jan 29, 2025. People are known to make offerings and tie messages containing wishes to the branches of the tree as a new year ritual, hoping their wishes will be fulfilled. Chan participated in year-end care visits to 18 districts co-ordinated by the Home Affairs Department. On Tuesday, he was at the Yau Ma Tei Community Centre Rest Garden to share with the public the joy of the festive season and welcome the Year of the Snake together.

Since I visited on a weekday, it was quieter than expected. You can get there by taking the 65K bus or the 25K minibus. The Wishing Tree is said to have been around since the Qianlong era, and the Tin Hau Temple was built here during that time. People have been living in the area since the Song Dynasty. Over time, Lam Tsuen has become a tourist attraction in Hong Kong. Originally, there were two large banyan trees in front of Lam Tsuen. According to the villagers, these two trees are very effective in granting wishes. Gradually, the Wishing Tree became one of the places where Hong Kong people go to pray for blessings. Nowadays, the Wishing Tree has become an artificial tree, and many devotees come to throw their wish plaques onto the tree, which has become a ritual. If your heart is sincere, your wish will come true. Looking around, Lam Tsuen feels quite modern, while the Tin Hau Temple remains bustling with incense offerings. It's just a temple, but it won't leave you in awe.
