Natural scenery
Ranbie Lake has a circumference of 16 kilometers and a depth of 100 meters. It is a slender lake in the north-south direction. Surrounded by high mountains 1000 meters above sea level, the forest continues to the water's edge, creating a mysterious landscape. The lake itself is 800 meters above sea level, so it is often cloudy and foggy, and there are often small waves on the water surface. From November to April of the following year, the lake is completely covered with snow and ice. So it used to be rarely visited by tourists in winter, and nearby hotels were only open in summer. However, with the holding of an event called "Ranbieko kotan (kotan means village in Ainu)" in recent winters, the number of tourists in winter has also begun to increase. In particular, the open-air baths and ice bars built on the frozen lake are very popular with tourists.
