[2024 Alajuela Attraction] Travel Guide for Laguna de Hule, Bosque Alegre, Alajuela (Updated Nov)
Address:
7QVW+C8F, C. Laguna Hule, Provincia de Alajuela, Río Cuarto, Costa Rica
Hidden: Rubber Lagoon, Wildlife refug
The Rubber Lagoon (Laguna de Hule) is located in the National Wildlife Refuge Bosque Alegre, near the Poas volcano and La Paz waterfall. Be aware this area has no structure or entrance fee, as it isn’t a national park.
In the lagoon entrance, you find a delicious restaurant to enjoy breakfast and keep yourself strong for all the energy and calories you’ll definitely burn next. For full Costa Rican experience, go for a nice pinto with egg, meat, sour cream and coffee. Now, you’re ready!!
First, you are required to descend 500m to the base of the lagoon, this could take around one hour. Additional 2-3 hours to go around the lagoon, find the perfect spot to eat, enjoy your surroundings and even go for a swim! Let me warn you, water might be warm but area in general is cold. However, a trip I have repeated a few times. This is a great spot for bird-watching. Some people mentions this could be an amazing area for kayaking, if you are willing to carry your kayak in a vertical and difficult trek.
This location is mostly unknown, therefore has high touristic potential without the crowds you can find in many national parks in Costa Rica. Scenery along the trekking paths is amazing. Be prepared to walk inside the river, to get yourself covered in mud, and don’t forget your waterproof jacket. If you are still not tired, you can check Congo Lagoon, too!
#funfact about this lagoon, it is actually an ancient volcano crater! 🌋
Better to visit between November and April, due to rainy season (possible landslides in the road or treks)
