Kumano Taisha is a shrine with a long history, and the two main features of the shrine are a huge tree, which locals believe to be hundreds of years old, and a traditional fishing bell (tsurigane) bell. This bell is unique because most large iron bells in Japan were melted down during World War II. This bell was preserved by order of the emperor and is therefore one of the few well-preserved bells in Japan.
