Kota Kinabalu, known as the 'Land Below the Clouds', is an unmissable landmark at the city center's 0km point
☁️ The 'Land Below the Clouds', also known as Kota Kinabalu, and more affectionately referred to as KK by the locals, is the capital of Sabah and a famous tourist city in West Malaysia, boasting beautiful mountain and sea scenery🌊, and is a necessary transit point on the way to Semporna.
The KK city center is not large, but it exudes a strong old Hong Kong vibe, with many highly-rated seafood restaurants🦞, Hong Kong-style tea restaurants🍵, and the Southeast Asia-popular Bak Kut Teh. Walking along Gaya Street in the city center, the weekend night market is bustling with crowds
At the end of the street is the Kota Kinabalu City Tourism Bureau, where the entrance features the KK tourism landmark—the 0km sign, which serves as a great spot for a tourist check-in .

Gaya Street Market: A 🌞-day must do in KK
Food, clothes, trinkets, hardware, pets, souvenirs, photo ops with mascots! Find it all here at Gaya Street’s Sunday Market 🤩
Bustling with activity, discover Sabah at this delightful buffet of stalls and vendors. From one end to the other, there are curious stuff to explore and music fills the air as live performers belt out familiar tunes. 🎶🎶🎶 Do try the local snacks like biskut cincin, sarang burung, and daun bayam.
The market starts early in the morning and reaches its full ‘potential’ at around 9-10am. Bring your sunnies! 😎

Never blue at Biru Biru!
Happy hour at Biru Biru (literally ‘blue blue) starts the moment they open at 12pm!
They have a pretty extensive menu for cocktails and their food menu looks pretty good too! We didn’t try any although we were told that their waffles are some of the best in KK 🤩
Prices are standard for such establishments and would probably reach RM30-40/pax for meal and drink. They outdoor seating with canopy is really a plus as you get to experience the KK vibe in the cool of the night.

Mercure: Two bedroom suite 😍
Mercure’s 2-bedroom suites are the best for families and friends who want to get together for reunions and rest.
Located near Jalan Gaya and Jalan Dewan, there are loads of cafes and restaurants to choose from. One can also just hop over to Suria Sabah mall too! The jetty is a 3 minute walk away and one can opt for some island hopping tours.
The suite comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, light cooking facilities and a wonderful lounge area. It has 3 aircond units and is sufficient to cool the whole area down.
Truly a great option at its price. We paid about RM330/night and we felt it really was the best one can get in the area. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mercure: Superior Room with a View
Located at the edge of Jalan Gaya, Mercure Kota Kinabalu is really a strategic hotel to be at when visiting KK.
We used this as a base for a weekend and it was perfect 🤩 for visiting Gaya Street Market and the cafes & restaurants at Jalan Dewan.
The beds are comf. Air conditioning and hot water work like charms. TV channels may be a little limited and the volume on the TV seems a bit muted but its okay if you plan to be out most of the time.
The room layout is better than the superior room without view in that the beds face the TV rather than the bathroom/toilet.
The superior room toilet configurations aren’t great in that there is a foot-high gap between the ceiling and the door, there are gaps at the sides of the doors, and the glass frosting is a little light for my liking. Pretty okay for family but may not be great for friends or colleagues travelling together. I would recommend their one-bedroom suite for more toilet privacy (remember to request for twin beds if applicable).
All in all, a good stay. We paid RM191 for our superior room with a view, RM40 more than the one without a view, but the layout was worth it! 🥳

🤩A Premium Exp: Shop & Dine at Tong Hing
Tong Hing is a local supermarket in Kota Kinabalu that carries premium brands from across the globe 🌏
Browse through their candies, chocolates, teas and so much more and have a glimpse of Australia, UK, Korea and more! When you are done with the supermarket, you can take a break at their newly opened cafe that serves premium ice-cream, pastries, pastas, cuts and beverages.
The environment is bright, airconditioned, and clean. Servers are kind, helpful, and attentive.
Even if you aren’t thinking of buying anything, browsing the aisles is quite a treat and educating experience of what’s out there 😃

Jalan Dewan: The Hall of KK Cafes
Love the cafe scene? Then, Jalan Dewan in KK is for you!
From the famous Biru-Biru to the colourful Mamacita, you are spoilt for choice at any time of the day 🤩 Every cafe-bar-restaurant has its own personality. We’ve yet to figure out which is our favourite…there’s so much to discover! (We do think Cozy looks better at night, though 😅)
Jalan Dewan is very near the city centre and walkable from the famous Gaya Street. Parking is pretty limited on this street but don’t let that deter you…take a chance and you might find a lot right where you need it to be!

Kota Kinabalu or also more fondly known by the locals as KK, is the capital of the state of Sabah on the Malaysian part of Borneo. Kota Kinabalu is a relatively big city with about 315,000 inhabitants.
Kota Kinabalu City from high ground
When I flew to Kota Kinabalu on the 27th of January 2020 for my internship with Borneo Eco Tours, I expected the city to be like Kuala Lumpur. I pictured a big city with lots of tourists, big shopping malls and tall buildings, with a very modernized and western look. And in some parts, that is all true, but for me, Kota Kinabalu is much more than that.
Once in Kota Kinabalu, I started to explore the city. I remember having dinner at the Filipino Market on my first night. This market is at the waterfront and offers the most delicious food and much more! The following days, I started to get familiar with the city center while walking around. Kota Kinabalu indeed offers a few luxurious shopping malls like Imago and Suria Sabah, which house a range of brands and products that are both local and international. However, those shopping malls were not the reason why I chose to come to Kota Kinabalu. The city has much more to offer.

Kota Kinabalu - Malaysia
Kota Kinabalu, Great place to visit in Malaysia. Easy access to food whether you fancy western such as KFC alongside traditional Malaysian dishes.
It is plentiful with activities. We partook in a lot of watersports such as scuba diving with great instructors. If you are in the Asian countries it is also easy and cheap to travel around. We were able to visit both Singapore and Kota Kinabalu in 2 weeks.
