This is a tearful guide to avoiding pitfalls in Cairo
The stunning Red Sea, the rich history, and the brilliant civilization are all points that still move me whenever I recall my trip to Egypt.
But in Cairo, countless scams significantly affect the travel experience.
So I decided to share the common pitfalls in Cairo, hoping to help those who are about to set off.
▫️
1⃣️ At Cairo Airport, you go through security first, then get your boarding pass and check your luggage. During security, staff might hold your passport for various reasons (the aim is to make you pay for the fast track). At this point, be firm. We directly snatched our passport back from his hand.
2⃣️ When you leave the airport, most taxis are scams and overcharge heavily. After exiting the arrival hall, cross the road and walk to the airport parking area to call an Uber.
▫️
3⃣️ Be wary of overly enthusiastic locals who approach you without you asking for directions or help. If they excessively praise you or offer to take you somewhere, it's usually a scam.
4⃣️ Anyone at the entrance of the pyramids telling you the site is closed today, offering to guide you or buy tickets, or chasing you for photos, is a scam. Ignore them.
▫️
5⃣️ The souvenir vendors at the entrance of the pyramids or the Egyptian Museum shouting "one dollar" sell poor-quality fridge magnets and papyrus paintings. They are not genuinely one dollar; many scammed tourists say it's actually one dollar just to look.
6⃣️ You can haggle camel rides at the pyramids down to 100 EL, and horse carriages to about 300 EL. Agree on the price before getting on and record a video as proof to avoid disputes later.
▫️
7⃣️ All restrooms charge a fee. Carry small change, or you might encounter staff pretending not to have change. Don't engage with people standing by the tissue dispenser offering you tissues; they charge one dollar per sheet.
8⃣️ Items at the Khan El Khalili market are obviously made in Yiwu. If you really want to shop, keep an eye on your bag and haggle aggressively.
▫️
9⃣️ Whether at a street-side restaurant or a fast-food chain like KFC, always count your change in front of the cashier. We encountered numerous instances where they intentionally gave less change, only to reluctantly give the correct amount when pointed out, indicating they knew the correct amount all along.
🔟 Street-side juice stalls charge 1-2 dollars per cup. Anything more is a scam!
▫️
1⃣️1⃣️ Keep a bottle of mineral water in your bag. The pyramid area is very sunny, and there are no water vendors.
1⃣️2⃣️ It's best to travel in groups at night. We encountered a group of kids trying to snatch our bags.

Are there any sisters going to Egypt from July to September? Small group looking for members
Don't go to Egypt on your own unless you are very familiar with the country, have excellent English, or are well-versed in Egyptian history and culture. Otherwise, it's better to join a tour group.

Khan El-Khalili | Step into the Arabian Nights of a thousand and one nights
Egyptians speak of the story of Khan El-Khalili with historical reminiscence and pride in their national essence.
Cairo's old city's Hussein Square is situated between the sacred Al-Azhar Mosque and the Imam Hussein Mosque. Historically, this was one of the urban centers during the Mamluk era!
At that time, Cairo was exactly at the crossroads of the trade route extending from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea!
In the 14th century, Egypt's rulers chose this geomantically auspicious site, ordered the demolition of nearby cemeteries, concentrated the country's folk artists and various craftsmen here, and according to the division of each industry into its own street and alley, built what would later become the famous traditional craft market of Egypt known throughout the Middle East and the world. To this day, the alleys of Khan El-Khalili still retain their original names.
Even today, this market with a strong Islamic ambiance is still composed of thousands of individual small shops distributed along dozens of small streets and alleys. The market still retains the shopping environment and atmosphere of the Middle Ages in its narrow paths. The goods sold range from gold and silver jewelry, copper plates, stone carvings, leather goods to traditional Egyptian handicrafts, offering everything one could wish for, not to mention those tacky toy camels and pyramids and sphinxes made of alabaster.
The very popular archway can navigate to the Omkalthoum Bar & Restaurant, just around the corner, but don't have too high hopes for the scenery and portrait photography. The attitudes of the owners of these two shops are very unfriendly, they will chase away and block tourists who are taking photos. Actually, I don't find anything wrong with this behavior at all, after all, different people have different ways of doing business and attitudes. I thought that buying something from their shop would allow me to take photos, but it wasn't the case. After we made our purchases, we thought we could take a few photos, but the shopkeeper still refused to move away. Not only did they refuse to move, but they also had a very unhappy look on their faces. But that's okay, they never said that buying something entitled you to take photos. In the end, I took a few shots with a telephoto lens.
But what's more outrageous is that the item we bought was fine when we looked at it, but after the shopkeeper packaged it and gave it to us, we found it was broken when we got back to the hotel, and the broken part was glued back together (proving it wasn't damaged on the way back to the hotel).
To be honest, if you want to take photos and check in, you can spend an evening browsing around, but if you want to buy something, I wouldn't recommend coming here~ Khan El-Khalili Market

Egyptian World Heritage | Historic Cairo: The grand bazaar that has continued for 800 years of everyday life
✅ The waters of the Nile, which nurtured the ancient Egyptian civilization, also nourish Islamic culture, giving rise to the greatest city in the Arab world: Cairo. Historic Cairo, a World Cultural Heritage site since 1979, is the most beautiful Islamic ancient city in history.
✅ Today's Cairo, burdened with too much historical sediment, is being swept into modern life by the torrent of time. Its steps are inevitably faltering, revealing a sense of vicissitudes and slight exhaustion, yet it becomes even more charming.
✅ Khan El-Khalili, the heart of Historic Cairo, where people gather, is said to be the largest market in the Middle East, still retaining its original appearance. Within its centuries-old buildings, centuries-old businesses continue.
✅ Take a taxi, stop at El Azhar Street.
To the south, there is a grand mosque; to the north, bustling old streets and alleys.
Follow the crowd, and you can't go wrong. What hits you is the Arab flair of summer outfits mixed with headscarves and long robes, a dazzling ocean of various items, creating an overwhelming sensation.
✅ Went there for two consecutive days, Friday and Saturday, both Muslim rest days, bustling with activity, not enough time to see everything.
✅ Pleasantly strolling around.
📍 It's really big, overwhelming to the eyes. In the ancient streets and alleys, shops are lined up one after another, with jewelry, ornaments, copper plates, perfumes, cloth bags, T-shirts, carpets... etc., all placed in prominent positions, pulling your gaze forward, and before you know it, you might get lost.
📍 Saw several large stone gates.
Multicolored strip stones, ornate arches, carvings of mountain flowers and lintels, stalactite decorations, Ionic capitals, Ottoman-style bay windows; time has flowed through the river of architecture for centuries, and has passed through centuries of everyday life, now pausing in front of me.
📍 Saw people coming and going, all looking very friendly.
The calm youth with a large wooden frame full of 'pocket bread' on his head, riding his bicycle swiftly;
The little boy who found the aunt's dropped change, chased to return it, and happily high-fived;
The gatherings with people playing the guitar and singing;
The merchants shouting 'one dollar' for a sale, all full of drama;
The hookah uncle who poses for photos voluntarily;
The helpless shrug of not being able to sell something after a long bargain;
The shrewd father, sitting across the street watching his son do business;
The young couple buying perfume for the wife;
Every smile is met with a response, every wave is greeted with a smile.
📍 Saw the most local marketplace.
Shops selling daily necessities string together alleys, filled with locals.
Wandered into a street of spices, where one can smell the scent of Egypt.
Wandered into a street of kitchenware, a street of artificial leather, presumably with many items from Yiwu, China, giving a sense of market research as a Chinese person.
Wandered to the side of a main road filled with snack stalls, sitting on small stools eating, looking very cool.
✅ Comfortably shopping.
📍 Having been to Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, by comparison, the prices here are really cheap. Shopping here doesn't put much pressure on the wallet, and bargaining becomes a pleasure.
📍 Machine-embroidered pure cotton cloth bags for 2 dollars; small copper plates carved by machine for 3 dollars; 5 dollars can buy 20 embroidered coin purses. All are quite nice souvenirs.
📍 Large cloth bags embroidered with the Tree of Life and Egyptian lotus for 6 dollars, the work of the shop owner's mother and twin sister.
📍 Bought a large copper plate handcrafted on the spot, asking the artisan to engrave a name in Arabic.
📍 A mere 40-dollar deal, the shop owner and his son were so happy that it was contagious, leaving the buyers beaming with joy.

Cairo, Egypt, falls into the myth of One Thousand and One Nights
Although the online reviews are not too good, as the largest handicraft market in the Egyptian urban area, it is still recommended to visit.
Please be sure to choose a time at dusk to come here, during Ramadan, every day at six in the afternoon is the busiest time in Cairo, everyone will prepare for prayer, and then start to enjoy the dinner of the day.
The lights in the Khalili market will also light up at this time, and everywhere is as wonderful as the myth of One Thousand and One Nights.
It is not recommended to shop here, which saves a lot of trouble, just enjoy the beauty here to your heart's content.
The surrounding area is a bazaar frequented by locals, and there are also many beautiful ancient mosques.
To take a taxi, you just need to walk to the side of the main road for a few minutes, which is very convenient.

The Famous Khan El Khalili Market
Khan El Khalili You will get the raw, unfiltered version of the locals in the most realistic way in the moment you step in Cairo. Shopping and checking the amazing glassware, old antiques, handcrafts and special souvenirs would take you about 2 hours. This is sort of an adventurous experience because of the chaos, haggling and noise but it does not hurt to experience a bit the local market authentic vibes. The place could get extremely crowded so it is always better to be cautious with your belongings. Products might not have a price tag so you must ask for and negotiate selling prices. It’s always a good idea to shop around with a local you can trust.

Khan El-Khalili market is Cairo’s famous bazaar and a worthwhile visit if only to take in the atmosphere as you window shop lamps, drums, and shisha pipes. Bartering can be entertaining and fun but expect that you’ll be doing a lot of it! Try to strike a deal you’re both happy with 😉

The oldest market in Arabia, you can't finish it in three days! Full of retro style
want to explore the old town of Cairo, you must have amazing strength. For example, Hanhalily, it is the largest market in the Middle East, with more than 2,000 small shops and dozens of intricate lanes.
If shopahers come here, they will be in the silverware, spices, cafes and rotisserie, and it is estimated that they will forget the time. If you like, you can also avatar the perfumer in the perfume shop, and the bottle and jar can be dizzy.
Tips: Before entering the market, you can find a local guide to accompany you, otherwise it is easy to get lost in the depths of the alley. Compared to the hand-made souvenirs that are similar, you can buy some papyrus paintings, each one is unique.

Khan el-Khalili Market
Address: Search for Khan el-Khalili on Google Maps.
Come here to experience the charm of ancient civilization, taste authentic food, and experience the unique cultural atmosphere. We will take you across the river of time to experience the accumulation of thousands of years of history. You can also take photos of the same scenes as in One Thousand and One Nights. It's really beautiful! Don't forget to taste authentic Egyptian food. Roast lamb, hummus, Egyptian pancakes... will make your mouth water and leave you wanting more.
When night falls, all the merchants will light up their special lights, and the ancient market will instantly become neon-lit. You can find a coffee shop in the east of the ancient city, sit down, drink coffee, listen to Arabic music, and watch Sufi dance. This is the nightlife of Egypt.
There is a shop in the market that sells handmade papyrus paintings. The paintings made by the artist are much more beautiful than the common ones. Although the price is a little expensive, it is worth it. Remember to bargain! You can also buy some souvenirs, such as silk, spices, ceramics, and gold and silver jewelry.
The second picture is a classic photo spot, where many people will line up to take photos (if you are shy and afraid of being stared at, don't go). Go in the evening, and the photos will look better when the lights are on.
The overall environment of the Khan el-Khalili Market is a bit old, but the place to buy small goods/souvenirs is really photogenic!

Khan el-Khalili Market: The Oldest and Largest Market in the Middle East
#travelshopping
If you’re looking for an authentic shopping experience in Cairo, look no further than Khan el-Khalili Market. Located in the heart of the historic Islamic district, this bustling and vibrant market has been a hub of commerce since the 14th century.
It is home to a number of charming old cafes. A good suggestion is El-Fishawi Cafe, one of the oldest in Cairo (established in 1797).
Also worth checking out is El-lord, where you’ll be serenaded by Umm Kulthum.
For food, there are plenty of places serving traditional Egyptian dishes.
Visitors can also find a number of historical landmarks in and around the market, including the Al-Hussein Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites.
Address: El-Gamaleya, El Gamaliya, Cairo Governorate, Egypt.

Khan el-Khalili is a famous bazaar and souq in the historic center of Cairo, Egypt. Established as a center of trade in the Mamluk era and named for one of its several historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has since become one of Cairo's main attractions for tourists and Egyptians alike.
This is recommended place to visit by tourism and solo bacpacker who love buy souvenier

Ichaaaaaa
I'm really impressed. Don't wear whatever you want in Egypt.
⛱️Must-visit attractions:
🌟Pyramids: This is definitely a must-visit place on your trip to Egypt! We followed the tour group by car into the scenic area, and the guide led us to three classic check-in points. I highly recommend everyone to go to the Pyramids View Restaurant-9 pyramids lounge, which is the closest restaurant to the Pyramids. There are viewing platforms and sand sofas here, which can avoid the crowd and enjoy the fun of taking pictures. I originally thought I needed to make an appointment in advance, but I didn't expect that the intimate small group had arranged it for us separately. The guide took us directly in. This feeling of no need to worry is really great!
🌟Abu Simbel: About this place, the online reviews are different, but I think, although the journey is far away, the scenery is really spectacular and it is worth a visit.
🌟Egyptian Museum: Don't believe those who say that Egypt has transported many cultural relics to China, and there is nothing to see in Egypt. The collection in the museum is extremely rich, and some do not even have glass covers for protection.
🌟Hot air balloon: This is an experience that must not be missed! We signed up in the group, only sixty dollars, this price is relatively reasonable, much cheaper than the domestic one hundred and sixty dollars. Although the price is slightly higher than the contact by yourself, the extra money is also to save your own energy. Especially for novices like me, there may be risks if you contact yourself.
🌟Abu Simbel Market: If you want to visit the local authentic market, you might as well let the guide take you there. We have such a need, the guide flexibly adjusted the itinerary and took us here. This is better than the Khalili market, it is worth a visit.
🍜Food strategy:
In Egypt, you can enjoy local specialties. However, it should be noted that although the prices in Egypt are relatively low, you must remember to bargain when buying items. Just like I bought a refrigerator sticker for 60 Egyptian pounds, and the sisters who went with me only spent 30 Egyptian pounds, this gap is not small! Therefore, you must master the bargaining skills, which can save you a lot of expenses.
🏨Accommodation strategy:
Regarding accommodation, it is recommended that you plan ahead. You can choose the right hotel or homestay according to your itinerary and budget. When choosing, you can refer to the evaluations and suggestions of other tourists to ensure that you have a comfortable accommodation environment.
🚄Traffic strategy:
If you don't speak English and have little experience in free travel, then group travel is a good choice. During the trip, there will be police protection on the car, making your trip worry-free and safe. In addition, if you need to exchange Egyptian pounds, it is best to change it in advance in Cairo, because it may be difficult to find a place to exchange Egyptian pounds in other places, and most of them can only use dollars to exchange Egyptian pounds. RMB is not very convenient to use here.
💗Other tips:
Egypt is a relatively safe country, but Egyptians may have some love for petty and deceitful situations. When you encounter those who yell "money money" in the scenic area, it is best to pretend not to hear and leave quickly. However, when you really need help, such as carrying objects, you can ask them for help, and then give a few tens of Egyptian pounds in tips, which is a few dollars, which can solve the problem and avoid unnecessary trouble. In addition, Egypt's current development situation is not very good, even Cairo seems a bit rundown, some places will have a strange smell, so everyone should be prepared in advance.

David Roberts (1796-1864)
Born in Scotland, British painter, Royal Academician
He began traveling to Palestine and Egypt in 1838. When he returned to England, his works were engraved by the printmaker Louis Haji and published in six volumes.
All 248 engravings were hand-colored: the first three volumes were themed on Egypt and Nubia, and the latter three were travel albums of the Holy Land.
Moreover, the works from this Middle Eastern sketching trip were sold in advance before he set off. When he returned to England several years later, they became an instant hit upon publication, earning him the favor of the Royal Academy.

Egypt | 'One Thousand and One Nights' in Khalili
The Khalili market in Cairo, with a history of 700 years, is a symbol of Cairo's ancient culture and Oriental Islamic culture.
I strolled around, went to the famous arch to check in, and experienced the 'One Thousand and One Nights'.
Many things are indeed very Yiwu-like, which our compatriots clearly disdain, but there are also many local Egyptian specialty products:
For example, as shown in picture 9, the small Egyptian perfume bottles are basically 30 on the 🍑, and the slightly nicer ones are 50 each. I looked at one or two shops that day, and the large ones were 30 to 50 Egyptian pounds, which is about 10 RMB, and it's really worth buying. If you buy 5-10, you will get a box to pack them in, and it should be fine if you wrap them well yourself. Especially since I bought several bottles of perfume that day, I wanted to divide them up and give them away as gifts. When I came back to the 🍑, I wanted to buy perfume bottles with dip sticks, which were mostly Dubai style. Moreover, I never saw such cheap perfume bottles again later...
Additionally, items like papyrus and fridge magnets, if you go to Luxor, you will definitely find cheaper ones, but if you are with a tour group, Khalili is about the same.

Where should college students go when traveling to Cairo? The hustle and bustle of Khan El-Khalili Market!
Cairo is a particularly fragmented city.
I can find the instant sense of an international metropolis at CTC,
and also feel the dirt and disorder of the old city area around Khan El-Khalili Market.
If you are a college student,
I highly recommend you to visit here for three reasons:
~
REASONS
1️⃣ Broaden Horizons: You can see people in different states under different living conditions. It will give you new insights and definitions for life choices after graduation.
2️⃣ Cost-effective Shopping: Most people come here to shop for bargains, and it's perfect for college friends who need to bring some souvenirs. I recommend choosing shops with clearly marked prices for real savings.
3️⃣ It might be too crowded for parents, and too noisy for office workers who rarely get a rest, so it's most suitable for students.
4️⃣ For taxis, use the international version of Didi or Uber. Tests show that Didi is a bit cheaper. If a driver asks for extra money in a private message, cancel and switch to another one. As long as you allow enough time, you won't give them an opportunity to take advantage.
5️⃣ Carry more 5EGP and 10EGP change with you, as some might not give you change even if they have it. That's when you need to be exact.
6️⃣ Always use Egyptian pounds in cash wherever possible. Not only is the black market exchange rate better, but the denomination of the currency is smaller, which can save a lot.
Cairo is still okay without hot air balloons, wait until Luxor with hot air balloons, and then I'll talk about how to save money.
7️⃣ Always record the price negotiations for activities and itineraries, and clarify the total amount of money. They often switch concepts and tell you how much per person when you get off. Just give what you owe and walk away.
8️⃣ I have encountered situations where the driver asked for a price increase before getting off. Usually, I let my companion get off first and take all the luggage down, then pretend not to understand and drag it out. Until all the luggage is moved, I then say I have no money. Once, a driver tried to snatch my phone, but luckily there was nothing left in his car, so I turned around and left gracefully, not indulging any nonsense!
9️⃣ Go to the shops with clearly marked prices in Khan El-Khalili Market, otherwise start bargaining at 10% of the asking price. Jordi's shop has clear pricing, which is more worry-free. Go there, buy, and leave; automatically block out other hawkers.

If you could only go to Egypt once, then I would recommend…
🌎“Whoever drinks the water of the Nile will return to Egypt again no matter how far he leaves Egypt.”
🌅Mention Egypt first, one of the four major ancient civilizations in the world. You must be fascinated by the pyramids, the Sphinx, and the mummies. This mysterious veil has always covered this distant country. Half desert, half sea water, you should always go to the mysterious Egypt once in your life to see the pyramids⛲
Itinerary guide:
🏜️Giza pyramids (Giza pyramids): connected with the Sphinx (Sphinx), in the center of old Cairo.
🏜️There are three pyramids: Khufu, Khafra, and Menkaure. The largest one is Khufu. If you want to enter the pyramid, you need to buy an additional ticket. If you drive, you will also need to purchase a separate parking ticket.
🏜️The scenic area is very big, and it will definitely be tiring just to walk. We chartered a car, and the tour guide took us to various parking spots and then we were free to move around. Save time and effort.
🏜️It’s great to take pictures from the first angle, (the largest Pyramid of Khufu)
Thoughtful Tips:
🍀Note 1: People who take photos for you in scenic spots, help you guide your posture, or act as models for you all want your money. Be sure to ignore them and let them lead the way. They will ask you for tips.
🍀Note 2: You can hear a lot of “one dollar” when you land, just pretend you can’t hear it, don’t listen or believe it, it all costs money
🍀Note 3: Before riding a camel in the Pyramid area, you must bargain for the price and ask clearly. It would be best if you can make a video to prevent the camel vendor from changing his words when paying. (Ride a camel, but you must negotiate before riding. Price, otherwise you will be cheated (I just took a photo with a camel and charged 10, and then asked me to ride on it, thinking it was the price, but it turned out that I was charged 20 more when I rode on it. Who would have thought, I still had to pay 20 when I finally got off) So, be sure to tell it in advance!)
🍀Note 4: It costs money to use the toilet in Egypt. Everyone must prepare this change, otherwise they will not give change. Just use Egyptian pounds.
🍀Note 5: Locals rarely go shopping in Khalili Market. If you go, just take photos and don’t buy anything. The prices inside are too high.
🍀Note 6: Hotels in Egypt do not provide slippers, toothpaste and toothbrushes. You must bring them. You must bring bath towels when going to the Red Sea.
🍀Note 7: You can exchange a certain amount of Egyptian pounds. Egypt is a tipping country. It is more cost-effective to tip in Egyptian pounds than in US dollars. It is also required in public toilets.
🍀Note 8:
Friends who come to Egypt for the first time may not be used to Egyptian food. Try to bring some Chinese food to avoid going hungry.
🍀Note 9: It is recommended to know the Egyptian numbers in advance. They are not Arabic numerals. Otherwise, it will be troublesome to recognize the license plate and read the bill.
🚗Egypt traffic arrangement
🚌Bus: There are four bus companies to choose from: GO BUS, Super Jet, East Delta Trabel Co, and Upper Egypt Go, which take longer to cross the city.
🚂Train: Except for Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Aswan, these two lines have modern trains, and the other lines are not as good as long-distance buses.
✈️Airplane: EgyptAir is the main domestic flight operator, and they are relatively cheap, which can save a lot of time on the journey.
🚕Taxi: Cairo mainly uses metered taxis. If you encounter a non-metered taxi for a long distance, you must negotiate the price before taking it. For short distances, it is recommended to use Uber (in Egypt, women should not sit in the front row)
🗓Itinerary:
🛫Cairo-Luxor, 8 hours by car/1 hour by plane
🛫Cairo-Aswan takes 11 hours by car/1.5 hours by plane
🛫Cairo-Hurghada, it takes 5 hours by car/1 hour by plane

🚗Aswan--Abu Simbel Temple, 3.5 hours drive
🚗Aswan - Point Queso, it takes 3 hours of driving

Journey to Egypt
Day 1: We arrived in Cairo. Since there was no check-in arranged in the morning, we decided to take a Cairo city walk. We visited City Stars, which is the largest mall in Africa. The variety of goods was dazzling and overwhelming.
Day 2: We set off at four in the morning to Siwa. After a 10-hour journey, we visited the Shali market. The souvenirs here are all handmade and very meaningful. I suggest everyone buy as much as possible because these souvenirs cannot be found elsewhere. Later, we visited the Cleopatra spring, which is said to be where the Queen of Egypt once bathed. In the evening, we went to Fetnas Island to enjoy the beautiful sunset and tasted the fresh milk with dates juice, which was very delicious. The scenery here is also very suitable for taking photos.
Day 3: In the morning, we went to the salt lake and prepared swimsuits and sunscreen in advance. In the afternoon, we headed to the Sahara Desert to experience the fun of dune bashing and sand sliding. At night, we camped in the desert, tasted the campfire evening tea, and enjoyed an unforgettable desert journey.
Day 4: Our group departed from Siwa to Matrouh. The journey was long and tedious. If time permits, I suggest staying in Matrouh for one night to enjoy the local customs. In the evening, we had a seafood feast, but the taste was just average.
Day 5: Our itinerary was quite tight. We first visited the Giza Pyramid Complex and the Sphinx, and even rode on local camels. In the afternoon, we visited the Egyptian Museum and the Khalili market. Due to the tight schedule, I suggest splitting these two attractions into separate visits to avoid an overly hectic schedule. In the evening, we ended our journey in Cairo Luxor.
