Surprise at the Mother Tree: The Origin of Kawazu Cherry Blossoms Nationwide.
Travel Date: 2/24
This winter has been particularly cold, causing the famous early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms to bloom late.
While the trees along both sides of the Kawazu River have only bloomed about 20-30% or not at all,
this tree, known as the original Kawazu cherry tree, is understood to be the first Kawazu cherry tree. Without it, there wouldn't be any other Kawazu cherry trees.
It is located in a relatively remote area, about a 20-minute walk from the train station.
In front of a private house, it has surprisingly bloomed about 50%.
Slightly disappointing but still a pleasant surprise.
It would look even more beautiful under a blue sky, but unfortunately, it was cloudy with snow on that day.
The original Kawazu cherry tree is a natural monument of the town.
Although it is quite far, you can take a walk along the Kawazu River upstream and visit this tree along the way.

"Snake Falls 🐍 | One of the Seven Kawazu Waterfalls, a mysterious small waterfall"
Located in Kawazu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Hebi-taki is a beautiful waterfall known as one of the Kawazu Nanadaru (Seven Waterfalls).
At about 3 meters high, it is the smallest of the seven waterfalls, but its quiet presence and the scenery created by the surrounding nature attract visitors.
I saw all the waterfalls, but
I liked this one the best!
Characteristics:
Origin of the name: It was named "Hebi-taki" (Snake Waterfall) because the shape of the waterfall basin resembles a snake's head.
Surroundings: A quiet place surrounded by lush greenery, where the sound of the waterfall and the chirping of birds echo.
Location: Nashimoto, Kawazu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture
Access:
Public transport: Take the Tokai Bus bound for "Kawazu Nanadaru" from "Kawazu Station" on the Izu Kyuko Line and get off at the "Kawazu Nanadaru" bus stop. From there, it is about a 15-minute walk to the Hebi-taki waterfall.
There is also a rest spot called Nanataki Chaya where you can stop by on your way to the waterfalls and enjoy local specialties and souvenirs. When visiting, please wear comfortable shoes as there are some slippery areas.

"Darudaru Dandanbashi (Waterfall Terrace Bridge) - A suspension bridge overlooking the beautiful valley of Kawazu Nanataki Falls"
Located in Kawazu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Darudaru Dandan Bridge is a single suspension bridge that spans the Kawazu Nanataki area.
This is a rare suspension bridge with stairs attached to it, called a suspended deck staircase bridge.
From this bridge, you can get a close-up look at the cliffs formed by the lava flow of Noborio Minami Volcano and the beautiful valley scenery.
There are many meetings and some places are slippery, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
📍Location: Nashimoto, Kawazu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture
Access:
Public transport: Take the Tokai Bus bound for Kawazu Nanataki from Kawazu Station on the Izu Kyuko Line and get off at the Kawazu Nanataki bus stop. From there, it is about a 15-minute walk to the Takidan Bridge.
Nearby attractions:

Kawazu: Where Spring Arrives Early 🌸
#tokyostroll
A day-trip from Tokyo.
If you can’t wait for cherry blossom season, Kawazu is the place to be! Just a couple of hours from Tokyo, this charming town on the Izu Peninsula is famous for its Kawazu-zakura—a special variety of sakura that starts blooming in February, way earlier than the usual cherry blossoms.
Walking along the Kawazu River, surrounded by endless rows of fluffy pink blossoms, feels like stepping into a dream. The contrast of vivid pink against the deep blue sky and river is simply breathtaking. And the best part? Since these sakura bloom for about a month, you have a much better chance to catch them in full glory!
The Kawazu Sakura Festival is an absolute must-visit, with local street food stalls, warm amazake, and picturesque views at every turn. If you’re chasing early spring vibes in Japan, this is the spot!
📍 How to get there: Take the JR Limited Express Odoriko from Tokyo to Kawazu Station (about 2.5 hours).
🌸 Best time to visit: Mid-February to early March.

Kawazu cherry tree: the source of early spring cherry blossoms🌸
The Kawazu Sakura Tree, located in Tanaka, Kawazu-cho, Kamo-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture, was discovered by chance along the Kawazu River in 1955 by Katsumi Iida, who planted it in his garden.
This cherry tree first bloomed about 10 years later in 1966, and was subsequently named "Kawazu Sakura."
It is now an estimated 70-year-old tree with a trunk circumference of about 115 cm and a height of about 10 m. Its beautiful pink blossoms bloom every year from early February to early March, attracting many tourists.
The tree is especially lively during the Kawazu Sakura Festival, when various events and food stalls are held around the tree.
It is recommended to use public transportation when visiting as it can get quite crowded.
Also, the logs are in a corner of a private home, so please enjoy them without causing any trouble 😌

I've been to see Kawazu Cherry Blossoms in the daytime several times, so I wanted to see them at night too! So I finished dinner at the hotel early and headed to the cherry blossom avenue 🚗
It was about 20 minutes from the hotel.
I went to the usual cherry blossom avenue, but only some of the lights were on? Hmm? Hmm? While thinking this, I passed several people in the dark...
I asked the only food stall that was open...
They said that due to the effects of COVID, only a part of the area near the station was open.
😳😳😳
I confirmed with the hotel that the lights were on, but I hadn't heard that they had scaled them down💦
I hurried over there and somehow made it in time for the lights to be turned off.
Fantastic Kawazu night cherry blossoms that float in the night🌸~💕💕
I'm glad I got to see them~
If you're planning on going, make sure to check the location carefully.

The main Kawazu-zakura viewing spot in Matsuda City is the "Matsudayama Herb Garden," a garden located on a hill with hundreds of Kawazu-zakura trees planted. You can take a walk and enjoy the cherry blossoms in a quiet atmosphere while taking in the beautiful scenery.

Cherry Blossoms and Tranquility: My Serene Escape to Kawazu
#myhiddengemsExperiencing the early bloom of Kawazu's cherry blossoms was an absolute delight. I took the shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Atami, followed by a rapid train to Kawazu Station. The journey lasted 45 minutes on the shinkansen and another 30 minutes on the rapid train. Along the way, I was treated to breathtaking views of the Izu Peninsula's rolling hills, stunning coastlines, and vibrant citrus orchards. Kawazu's cherry blossoms usually begin to bloom from late January to late February. So, if you're in Japan during winter, you still have the chance to experience the beauty of sakura season on the Izu Peninsula.

Early-ripening cherries
The sakura Blossom Festival in Kawazu is special. It is in this place that the first Japanese cherries of the eastern region bloom. In most of Honshu, this happens in mid-March, whereas here the so-called Kawazu-dzakura dresses in a pale pink outfit about a month earlier.
The festival runs from February 10 to March 10 and is incredibly popular among those who want to spend the winter as soon as possible and meet the bright colors of spring.
How to get there
The main festival area is located right next to the station
Kawazu on the Izukyu railway line, laid from Atami.
You can get from Tokyo by Odoriko express train or by
Tokaido shinkansen with transfer to JR Ito line at Atami Station.
It is interesting
Sakura blossoms in Kawazu a month earlier than in other regions
More than a million people visit the festival every year
The petals of Kawazu-dzakura are large and bright pink - they look like they were created for photography
The joys of the festival
The festival rages in the cities of Kawazu and Mine onsen — mostly along the banks of the Kawazu River. There are many kiosks with food and drinks, souvenirs and products of local artisans on the waterfront.
Entertainment events are organized at the festival, and beautiful illuminations are lit in the evenings. The surroundings of the Kawazu railway station are crowded at this time, so for silence, peace and peaceful contemplation of fleetingly blooming sakura, you should go to the embankment, or better yet, to Mine onsen.

The commute from Shinjuku to Kawazu took about 2.5-3 hours. There’re massive row of blossoming cherry blossoms all over the place! The path is long enough for you to take a lot of photos. And during this period, from February to early March, many snacks and shops are opened to celebrate the blossoming of sakura. The pink fish-like red bean snacks is a must-eat! You can probably spend around 2 hours in this area.
P.S. make sure to check the train schedule before leaving as there will be no more fast train after around 4pm.

Kawazu Sakura festival in Japan
#cherryblossom2024
The fastest cherry blossoms in Japan is known as Kawazakura, literally meaning that Sakura(Cherry Blossoms in Japanese) in Kawazu town. Kawazu sakura starts blooming in February and you can enjoy full blossoms from late February until early and mid March.
I went to Kawazu town to enjoy those cherry blossoms festival this year, and it was an amazing experience. As you can see, Kawazu sakura has stronger pink colour than those blooming late and you can take wonderful pictures.
It took less than 2 hours by train from Tokyo to Kawazu town, which means that you can do a one day trip. #sakurafestival #Kawazu

Enchanting place where you can see and feel spring in winter time. I recommend going early as the crowd seems to arrive in drives around mid day. There are pop up shops where you can different snacks and festival food. It’s 100% dog friendly. i think there were many visitors with dogs than with children ☺️Make sure you check the train schedule on the way back because the intervals are quite long for the local train. You can take the express train but make sure to buy the express train ticket, which is all reserved seat, and it’s quite pricey.
