[2025 Ijen Attraction] Travel Guide for Kawah Ijen (Updated Jul)

Visiting Kawah Ijen is a truly surreal experience — even in the pouring rain. It rained almost the entire hike, turning the trail slippery and making the climb more challenging. Plus, the situation made it the perfect time to put your hiking gear to the test. We started to depart from our hotel at 12am and it took us around 2 hours ride to reach post. Typical temperature is 8–12°C but since it was raining and windy, the temperature was way lower than that. There are small warungs (stalls) at the post sell hot drinks, instant noodles, and rain ponchos for last-minute supplies. We collected our gas mask and head lights as well (included in our tour). Since it was raining heavily, the trail was packed with hikers and “Lamborghinis” — miner’s cart used to transport tourists. We took about 3 hours to reach the final checkpoint before descending to the crater lake and blue fire. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain and trail congestion, the blue fire was no longer visible by the time we reached the final checkpoint before descending to the lake. We were also unable to proceed to the lake, as our guide advised it was too dangerous to continue under the current weather conditions. We enjoyed a good hour of clear weather before the rain started pouring again. Our descent began around 6 a.m., and we reached the starting post by 8 a.m, completely soaked. The hike is not extreme, but it is a steady 1.5–2 hour climb, if without the rain. People with knee issues or breathing problems may find it tough, especially with added weather challenges.

Ferry duration: 1 hour. 🚗 From Ketapang port → Hotel in Banyuwangi: 15–30 minutes. --- 🥾 Hiking Kawah Ijen: Start from the hotel: Around midnight. Drive to the starting point (Paltuding): 1–1.5 hours. Hiking distance: 3 km (approximately 1.5–2 hours). Best time: 2 AM–4 AM (to see the Blue Fire before sunrise). --- 🎒 What to prepare: Gas mask (some tours provide this). Headlamp. Warm clothing + gloves. Sneakers/hiking shoes. Drinking water. Small snacks. --- 📸 Recommended tours (if you prefer not to travel independently): Ijen Blue Fire Tour (available as a one-day tour from Bali or a 2-day, 1-night tour from Banyuwangi). 💰Per capita consumption: I spent less than 500 US dollars in total 💞Recommendation reason: The itinerary is really smooth and not special forces at all. 🗓️Itinerary: Land in Surabaya on the first day and rest for one night. Take a bus to Malang on the second day. Book a hotel in Malang for two nights. After checking in Malang, I found a car rental company on Facebook and got a motorcycle for 10 dollars a day. I started to sleep until 12 o'clock. Navigate to Bromo to watch the sunrise. After watching, ride back to the hotel to take a shower, walk around Malang City and sleep. 😴Wake up at 6 o'clock the next day and ride to Sewu Waterfall. Remember to bring a change of clothes. When you come back at about 12 o'clock, take a quick shower and change clothes, then pack your luggage and ask the car rental company to pick up the car from the hotel or leave the luggage at the hotel to walk around. Book a train or bus to Banyuwangi or Pengda Pier by yourself, and ask the local tour group to book a trip to Ijen Volcano!! Although it is tiring, it is a good movie. After playing, I came back and arrived at the bottom of the mountain around 9 o'clock. It depends on the itinerary to Bali or what arrangements are there! 🏖️Environment/Facilities: The people along the way are simple and honest, and the Indonesians are not as harsh on Chinese bosses as they are in China.

I went on the famous Ijen Volcano Trekking along with the Promo Volcano Trekking in Java Island right next to Bali Island in Indonesia. I applied for the tour after arriving there and went. It is a course that starts at dawn, trekking, sunrise, and volcano viewing, and then comes down. It is a fantastic otherworldly landscape. Highly recommended!!!

We started walking up at 1 am and arrived at around 3 am. It took about 2 hours to walk on a gentle slope to a very steep slope of 45 degrees. For those who can't handle it, there are horses and cars to take you up and down. The weather depends on how cooperative the day is. When we reached the top, we couldn't go down to see the flaming lava. The wind was very strong and the fog was thick. We couldn't see the way. With such strong winds, we had to find a hole to hide from the wind. When the sky started to brighten, we were able to walk up to see the sulfur lake. This area smells very bad of sulfur. We had to wear a mask. The trees around here look like they're burned all the time, turning them black. When we got down, we saw some workers, some locals, digging up sulfur. Some people sell the mineral to tourists. Some people carve it into various shapes. Below, they can set up tents and there are restaurants and bathrooms. The hike to the crater needs 2-2,5 hours especially for those who are not used to hike and u will need another 30 mins to see the blue fire….There are two ways to reach to the summit. u can go there on foot or u can rent the cart…so u will just sit down and will be pushed and pulled by 2 person. The cost varies….it us around 1.2 million for return if u start from the gate . The gate is opened at 2 am and we have to show the health medical letter and the ticket costs 5K idr for local tourist and 100K for foreigner.for weekends, it cost 7.500 IDR For local tourist and 150K for foreigner . Having walked for almost 2.5 hours, i reached the summit ….yeay and hard walk pays off….i see a very beautiful and stunning scenery there….it’s worth it….. .
