The others are Jiayuguan, where the Great Wall begins in western China, and Shanhaiguan, where the Wall ends at the Bohai Sea in eastern China. It’s the site closest to Beijing, but many travelers and tour buses pass it by in favor of seeing the Great Wall at Badaling. The pass is circular and less than 5 km (3 miles) long so you can walk around it in a day. To get to Juyongguan from Beijing is quite simple by public transport; all you need to do is take subway line 13 to Longze Station and hop on board the 68 shuttle bus that will take you directly there. The Western Hills section of the Great Wall is steep, with high altitude and beautiful scenery. Towers 14-13-12 are the steepest and most scenic sections of the entire Juyongguan route, so climb this part when you have the most energy and stamina. Tower No. 12 is the peak, then descend, which is also quite steep, all the way down to Tower No. 7. Here is the South Gate Tower, as well as other attractions such as the Biaozhong Temple, Stele Forest, City God Temple, and museum. Juyongguan Great Wall has two paths to choose from. We chose the shorter path, which takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to walk. Initially, we thought the stairs wouldn't be as steep as the other side, but they were actually very steep, almost like climbing. It was quite exhausting. We went before noon, and the sun was very strong. While other days in Beijing were mostly cloudy, today was very sunny. Although it was a bit hot, it was great for taking photos. 😆 When we reached the other side, we found that the descent was easier than the climb up. The steps were thicker than those we climbed up. This pass isn't as grand as Badaling, but it takes less time to walk. If you have time, you can come and try climbing it. 😝 P.S. A friend told me that this pass is lit up at night, so you can come at night for beautiful photos.

For this self-guided tour in Beijing, I decided to focus on the Great Wall instead of just taking a quick glance and leaving as I did before. After searching for a lot of information online, I chose the Juyongguan Great Wall in the suburbs of Beijing as the highlight of this trip. Upon arriving at Juyongguan, I was deeply impressed by the sight before me. The Great Wall winds through the rugged mountains, exuding grandeur. I climbed the wall slowly, feeling the historical charm of each brick with every step. After reaching the top, I gazed into the distance and saw the endless Great Wall winding through the mountains, like a majestic dragon lying there. This feeling of being immersed in history is truly indescribable. During the climb, I also learned about the long history of Juyongguan. It has been recorded since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period and is one of China's nine major passes. It was officially incorporated into the Great Wall's construction system during the Northern Wei Dynasty, becoming an important military fortress in the northwest of Beijing. Walking along the beacon tower ruins on the Great Wall, I could almost feel the determination and courage of the soldiers who guarded the frontier back then.
