Laoshan or Mount Lao, located just outside of Qingdao in China's eastern Shandong Province is known as the one of the cradles of Taoism. It's affiliation with Taoism is historic and can be seen it it's many well-preserved pagodas, gates, stupas, temples, statues, as well as the surrounding scenic beauty. The whole area is set against majestic mountain faces and peaks, adjacent to the ocean below, providing a stunning contrast-especially if you climb up to the top! There are many places to buy a souvenir or a snack here, or even a namesake cold Laoshan beer! I recommend watching the monks walk around and performing their religion duties at the various temples whilst breathing in the scented smell of the fragrances they burn outside. Getting here is relatively simple from downtown Qingdao; taxi, private car or bus are the easiest ways to get to the main entrance, taking about 30 minutes. Once there you will need to buy tickets and board another tourist bus up the mountain to the steps anyway, driving along the picturesque costal road. You can do this place in half a day. I suggest doing it in Spring or Summer in the late afternoon, as you can witness the sunset over the ocean. I highly recommend this as a place you should visit and I was very happy I visited here.

Precautions for the Giant Peak of Laoshan's Four Lines!
The entrance to the Giant Peak is right at the Dahedong Ticket Office, and the starting point of the mountain loop bus is the same as that of the Laoshan South Line.
Friends planning to go to the Giant Peak must pay attention: the South Line follows the coastal route and can go to Taiqing Palace, while the Giant Peak is purely a mountain climbing route. If you are not confident in your physical strength, be sure to note the following points!
1. Do not save the 80 yuan round-trip cable car fare. You must take it. It saves a lot of energy. Otherwise, if you go late, I fear you won't have time to get down the mountain.
2. When you reach Xunmen, also known as Xiantian Bridge or Lingqi Peak (they are the same place), you can stop there. Most of my photos were taken here, and it counts as reaching the top.
3. Do not circle the mountain. The scenery is similar, but the distance is really not close. After reaching Xunmen, you can return the same way.
Of course, friends with good physical strength can climb the entire route or take the cable car up and then circle the top of Laoshan, walking through all eight trigram gates. Along the way, you can view the mountains and sea from different angles and pass by an iron chain suspension bridge.
It is important to remind everyone that although the Giant Peak is a very physically demanding route, the sea view at the top is very beautiful. However, Qingdao's maritime climate is unpredictable, and Laoshan's sea fog is present seven out of ten days. The day I went, the weather was stuffy, and the sun was overhead, but it still couldn't stop the sea fog from spreading. So if you find that the fog is heavy that day, it is highly recommended to change your route to the South Line at the foot of the mountain. Otherwise, you will find nothing but white fog at the top.
The distant photos I took were also processed to remove fog; otherwise, they would be even less clear.
The overall tour time is estimated to be about 8 hours if purely climbing, 5-6 hours for cable car + mountain loop, and 3-4 hours for purely cable car. These time estimates are based on people with good physical strength. If your physical strength is not very good and you like taking photos, the cable car + Xunmen route can take up to 5 hours.
So everyone must act according to their ability. I took the cable car up and down Huashan and visited all five peaks (East, West, South, North, and Central) in 6 hours (including photo time). My physical strength is not bad, but I still found the Giant Peak very tiring. The Giant Peak is relatively steep overall, almost all stairs straight up, and the coastal area of Qingdao is stuffy in summer, often with low air pressure, which greatly affects your cardiopulmonary function. In short, act according to your ability, and remember, remember.

There are two time slots for reserving tickets to Mount Lao: 7:00-12:00 in the morning and 12:01-16:30 in the afternoon. I set off in the morning to climb the mountain, arriving at Dahe East Visitor Center at 8:50. Since the shuttle bus will wait until almost full before departing, we left at 9:00. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes to reach the 【Mountain Gate】, and those who want to take the cable car will also take it from here to go up the mountain.
【Cable car🚡 one-way 40r】If you don't take the cable car, it takes about an hour and a half on foot. If you have average physical strength, you can consider taking the cable car, because the path up the mountain is all steps, but not particularly steep. After getting off the cable car, the steps to 【Li Men】 will be steeper and longer.
I personally started climbing around 9:20, reached Li Men at 11:00, then followed the map clockwise, first went to the Xingxing Pavilion, then returned to Li Men for a rest. At about 12:00, I set off to visit Xun Men, Zhen Men, Gen Men, Kan Men, Qian Men, Iron Chain Bridge, and Kun Men in turn. The most exhausting part was actually the steps from the Mountain Gate to Li Men. The rest of the journey around Jufeng was not very tiring, mostly gentle steps down, with occasional longer steps up. Therefore, I suggest everyone to start from Li Men and take the clockwise route on the right hand side, which will be relatively easier. It took about two hours to go around each gate, and at about 2:20 in the afternoon, I reached Li Men again to start descending the mountain. It took about an hour, and by 3:20 in the afternoon, I reached the Mountain Gate and took the shuttle bus down the mountain.
So, it took me a little over six hours to complete the entire route of hiking up the mountain - around Jufeng - and down the mountain!

Jufeng Challenge Route: Starting from 'The First Famous Mountain Above the Sea' Viewing Platform, enter the boundary of the Jufeng Bagua Gates tour. Proceed clockwise along the mid-mountain road, passing through Kunmen, Duimen, Qianmen, Kanmen, Genmen, Zhenmen, Xunmen, and then back to Limen. Enjoy the scenic spots along the way, which takes about three to four hours. You can also continue along the stone steps up the mountain, directly to Xunmen, and then tour the Bagua Gates and various scenic spots in a counterclockwise direction.
