Diocletian's Palace is a massive ancient Roman complex built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Rather than being a palace for the retired Roman Emperor Diocletian, it is more like a fortified compound, with half serving as Diocletian's residence and temple, and the other half as a typical Roman military camp. Today, Diocletian's Palace occupies half of the old town of Split, Croatia's second-largest city. It is one of the best-preserved and largest Roman palaces still in existence, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Diocletian was born a commoner and later rose through the military ranks to become the Roman Emperor. When he took over the empire, the once-mighty Roman Empire was in decline, plagued by internal strife, power struggles, military factions, barbarian invasions, and famines. After eliminating all rivals and gaining complete control of the Roman Empire, Diocletian deified the emperor's status, moved the capital, and sidelined the Senate to implement autocratic rule. He also initiated extensive reforms in taxation, law, and politics to address the empire's decay. Externally, he waged wars to secure the empire's borders against Persia, Egypt, and Germanic tribes. Most notably, he established the Tetrarchy, a system of rule by four emperors, to manage the vast empire and succession issues. This system worked well during Diocletian's reign due to his prestige and leadership, but it collapsed after his retirement. Nonetheless, his other reforms laid a solid foundation for the later resurgence of the Roman Empire. After reaching the pinnacle of power, Diocletian made the surprising decision to abdicate, becoming one of the few Roman emperors to voluntarily step down. He chose to retire to his hometown of Dalmatia, where he built Diocletian's Palace near his birthplace in Split. There, he lived a peaceful rural life, experiencing a transformation from soldier to emperor to farmer. In Split, Diocletian's Palace is impossible to ignore. The city is essentially built upon the palace, with homes and businesses embedded within the ancient ruins. The centuries-old stones can be found in every corner, creating a unique blend of old and new that I personally find enchanting. It feels like stepping through a time warp back to ancient Rome. 📜 Interesting Story: After Diocletian's abdication, the Roman Empire quickly fell into chaos again. Interestingly, when the empire was in turmoil, someone came to Diocletian's Palace to ask him to return and restore order. However, the retired Diocletian, enjoying his tranquil rural life, famously replied, "If you could show the emperor the cabbages I have grown with my own hands, he would never dare suggest that I replace the peace and happiness I now enjoy with the insatiable greed of power." 📜 Ironic Fact: After Diocletian's death, he was buried in his palace. Ironically, he is infamous for the last and largest persecution of Christians in Roman history. In the 7th century, his mausoleum was converted into the Cathedral of St. Domnius, housing the relics of two martyrs who were persecuted under his rule. 🌟 Tips: You can buy tickets to enter the Cathedral of St. Domnius within Diocletian's Palace and climb the bell tower. When traveling in Croatia, it is recommended to take the bus, as it is more convenient and reaches more destinations.

As it is less crowded compared to Dubrovnik and offers a scope for a more authentic croatian experience. Split can also score more points on the affordability scale (only when compared to Dubrovnik). The rest of croatia continues to be decently priced. As far as sightseeing goes. Just about everything you want to see in Split is within the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's Palace, completed in 305 AD. It's a compact area and you'll easily find your way around the narrow alleys. Make sure you visit St. Domnius Cathedral, it is well over 1,000 years old. You could climb to the top of the bell tower there for a view of the city. But if you care, I did find a better spot.Walk exactly 10 minutes to the left of the palace and then up some stairs and paths in the neighborhood of Marjan. By the time you reach the tiny St. Nicholas Church (1219), you'll be rewarded with an even better view, most importantly without any tourists and it's free! #100waysoftravel #croatia #split

Getting There - Bus: Zadar—-Split Attractions - Diocletian's Cellars, Saint Domnius Bell Tower, Silver Gate, Hotels - Spinutska ul. 39 Food & Restaurants - Pumparela Gelateria It took me approximately 3.5 hours to get to split from Zadar. There are tourists everywhere. apparently it was a hotspot for American tourists lol. can’t imagine if it was summer Split must be mobbed. Suggest you can book the trip for island hopping here.

Hvar is a well know Croatian Island right off the coast of Split. It has been inhabited for thousands of years, with its old city ‘Stari Grad’ celebrating its 2400 birthday as a town. 🏔Maybe people will flock to the party town of Hvar and sit at the hotels in front of a pool, but if you take the extra effort you could find some magical views. The little abandoned village of Malo Grablje sits on top of the Hvar mountain and has some gorgeous views of the north and south side of the island. I would recommend getting electric bikes if you are a beginner and cycle to the top. 🌿 Hvar is also known as the lavender island with fields planted on the mountains of Hvar. The resemble Thai mountain fields but with lava Dee. some of them are deserted and have turned into forest which makes it even for enchanting. All in all, you can’t go wrong with a bike ride around the island and especially on the mountain tops. But off the beaten path, lies a charming fishing village popular with yachts and off road bikers 🐠 Fresh Food - The sea food restaurants are a must sea. Places like Trica Gardelin, Luka’s Konoba, Mediterranean, Vrboscam, and Bonaca use freshly caught fish caught in the morning. they prepare it in the local style and you can definitely taste the freshness. If you wake up early enough you can also buy fish off the boats yourself. 🚴‍♂️bike trails and running trails along the coast cut through vineyards for an amazing experience. bike and boat rentals are possible through B&B rentals service company 🏖Soline beach is a must see and very child friendly. For a more romantic getaway try one of the many secluded coves along the coast. Zecevo island is a 20 minute boat ride away, with a restaurant. I took the ferry to the island of Hvar, which became my third stop in Croatia. Once known as one of the top ten most beautiful islands in the world, it has the quaint charm of an old town and plenty of sunshine, and was once an excellent place to escape from the hustle and bustle. The Mediterranean climate allows the lavender on the island to grow particularly lush. In summer, you can see lavender all over the fields, which is the representative of Hvar Island. After getting off the boat, I went to a B&B near the hotel for an All Day Breakfast (HKD 80), which was the best breakfast I had in the past few days. At first I thought prices had finally returned to normal, but later I found out that this idea was wrong because Hvar Island is now Croatia's number one carnival city. Walking to the square at the port, I once again felt the power of this hot summer and found a coffee shop to escape the heat. I ordered a cup of lavender lemonade to try the lavender that was grown in abundance locally, while the foreigner sitting opposite me was holding a glass of white wine, leisurely spending the afternoon. The air on the island was filled with the scent of lavender. I had no plans to walk around the island, so I just wandered aimlessly in the city center. As the sun sets, I sit on a bench next to the pier, waiting for the night to come. The sun rises and sets, nature has its own laws of operation, and we tend to ignore constant things.
