If I had to choose one favourite Vietnamese food, it would have to be a Banh mi. Banh Mi is a Vietnamese baguette stuffed with different types of meat, crunchy fresh vegetables and sometimes with a spread of meat pate. A banh mi specialty shop that you can find near us would be Joo Chiat Banh Mi Ca Phe and you can find heavenly fresh banh mi here. They have lemongrass grilled beef banh mi, chicken cold cut with floss banh mi, otah banh mi, etc. The selection is many! Everything is freshly made in store too. Grab their special Vietnamese drip coffee and lemongrass ginger tea, so refreshing.

I came across this quaint little place while exploring Joo chiat and was intrigued by the shopโs old housing aesthetics. I decided to try it as the recent reviews on google maps were all quite good. And I was not disappointed. I tried their signature cheeky bee hoon soup. The broth was very flavorful and rich, I drank every last drop. I then decided to order a second bowl as I was there with a friend so we shared. Our second bowl was the braised pork cheeky bee hoon dry. The noodles was very springy and had been infused with some delicious broth. The pork was also very tender and melted in my mouth. I also had a pink guava drink which was both refreshing and something I donโt see every day. I love the design on the shop where the shop owners have decorated with antiques from Singaporeโs households in the 1980-2000, like the old HDB windows grills, the old sewing machines, old benches, old photos and report cards from schools etc. it was all very well put together to create a sense of nostalgia. The tables are well spaced apart and so you wonโt be hearing your bright outs conversations. This shop is really a little hidden gem and I hope it wonโt become too crowded the next time I visit. Highly recommended to visit it when you are in Joo Chiat!

๐ธ๐ฌ๏ฝThe Indonesian restaurant Salt & Palm
This Indonesian mixed cuisine restaurant [Salt & Palm], all the way from Sydney, opened their first overseas outpost in Singapore. It serves on modern Southeast Asian cuisine with Indonesian style, which making people feel like in Bali.
๐๏ธ๐๏ธ๐
The dishes are exquisitely prepared, and the taste is a fusion of traditional Indonesian cuisine flavors and modern presentation methods. And 1/3 of the menu is suitable for vegan friendly, especially [Potato cake] and [Mushroom Rendang].
๐๐ฅฉ๐ฅฅ
Of course, meat is also essential. [Beef Short Ribs], the beef is soft and tender after being slow-cooked, served with rendang sauce and toasted coconut flakers, it is quite delicious.

[Porchetta] uses pork belly, the skin is crispy, the meat is fat but not greasy, and it is paired with traditional Balinese spices, which is super satisfying.

Braseiro Restaurant's Lamb Merguez and Steak!
Eh, Braseiro Restaurant at Joo Chiat Road, the lamb merguez and steak was a real treat lah! The spices in the lamb merguez was spot on, it had a real kick to it and the lamb was so tender and juicy. And the steak, wow, it was cooked to perfection and so juicy, I could taste the quality of the beef. The sauces were a great addition too, it added a nice spicy kick to the dish.
Overall, the ambience of the restaurant was great, the service was friendly and attentive. I will definitely recommend to my kakis to try the lamb merguez and steak if they haven't already! A great addition to Joo Chiat's food scene, I would say.

Visited Kings Cart Coffee Factory in Joo Chiat and had a fantastic experience. I tried their chicken rice tea, which was delicious and had a nice balance of savory and sweet flavors. The coffee was also great, with a rich and smooth taste. To finish off my meal, I had a pecan pastry which was the perfect sweet treat to end on.
One of the things that really stood out to me was the decor of the cafe. They had a terracotta statue on display which added a unique and interesting touch to the overall atmosphere. Quality cafe in a quaint ๐ธ๐ฌ neighborhood
Joo Chiat is a quaint neighbourhood a little far-flung from the city centre, but definitely worth the ride to check out the pastel shophouses on Koon Seng Road and plenty of aesthetic cafes ๐
We decided to visit @commonmancoffee and tried to skip the lunch crowd by arriving at around 1:40pm, but still had to wait for 2 tables ๐ฅฒ The sizable place was full of people both indoors and indoors with a never-ending queue (they donโt take reservations) ๐ซฃ Prices were not cheap, but (almost) everything was damn delicious and the huge portions left us walking away super full ๐คฐ
๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ก ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ซ
Found on the lunch menu served from 10am to 5pm, this was SO GOOD! We loved how the unique beetroot BBQ sauce added a sweet tanginess to the juicy beef patty while the herbed fries were so flavorful that we didnโt really need any ketchup ๐๐
๐๐๐ฏ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ญ๐๐๐ค
The all-day breakfast menu had so many options we wanted to try, but we finally decided on the creamy buttermilk pancakes that came with a seasoned butter, which was absolutely sensational ๐ฅ Dipping the crispy bacon into syrup was SUCH a guilty pleasure and we probably ate more than we should have ๐ฅ๐ฏ
๐๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ก๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ค๐
This looked super aesthetic but was a little disappointing in terms of taste, as the icing made the cake a little too sugary and artificial ๐ฅด SKIP!

There was a huge range of regional coffees that you could pick after scanning the QR code on the menu โ๏ธ As a non-coffee lover, this flavour that my friend chose was probably the best Iโve ever tasted, as the hints of bergamot and apricot made the slow-brew not bitter at all ๐๐ป Plus the coffee tasting card was also super cute~

They have different beans available for you to choose from. I love the pastry here too. Doughnut and Korvapuusti are my favourite. The croissants are great too! Another item I love here is their cold brew which you can stock up for those WFH days ๐

Dessert date at Tigerlily Patisserie
#dateideas
Happened to be around Joo Chiat and Katong area on a date and needing a place to end off on a sweet note? Or just want to help satisfy sweet tooth cravings of your partner? Opened just last April, Tigerlily Patisserie was opened by a pastry chef who has prior working experience in Michelin starred restaurant overseas. This cafe is apparently quite popular too, with queues sometimes forming outside to enter.
Lemon Basil Tart: citrusy and zesty with hints of basil that is not too overpowering in terms of the herbal taste, with tart pastry that is not too buttery nor hard.
Forest Berry Taco: true to its name, it looks just like a taco but a dessert version, using chocolate wafers as the shells and filled with berries and chocolate cream. Interesting concept
Pink Guava and Pear Cake: interesting taste of white chocolate on the outside, with a layer of crunchy pink guava and pear bits on the inside. Together with a biscuit base, it is not only pretty but taste good too.
Matcha latte: pretty thick consistency and can taste the slight bitterness in the matcha powder.
The desserts are plated in really pretty terrazzo plates and cups, in pastel colours. The cafe also has nature vibes with leaves painted on the walls. Do come here as early as possible, perhaps for an early breakfast snack, as the desserts are popular and sold in limited quantities, to avoid disappointment.

The Communal Place, Joo Chiat (Singapore)
Upon entering the restaurant, an eye-catching and elaborate rustic floral display created by Windflower Florist stood to the left of the entrance to welcome us. According to the staff, the other floral decorations around the restaurant were also done by the same florist as part of their collaboration. At certain points, the restaurant got a tad noisy when many tables of people were talking.
We ordered the hot chocolate, which tasted super legit. It was smooth, milky and chocolatey โ so good that my husband got himself a second cup! For the main course, I had the beef cheek ragu linguine while my husband had the fish and chips. Pretty standard fare, was nice but not fantastic. My main couldโve used a bit more salt and pepper for flavour. Lastly, our dessert was a brownie with a scoop of ice cream. It had a unique feature of a charred brownie base, leaving a smoky roasted taste which my husband thoroughly enjoyed. However, it felt more like eating burnt bits to me, not appealing at all. Plus there were chunks of walnuts in it too (I rarely eat nuts), so I just spent a lot of time picking stuff out from my dessert โ that wasnโt very fun.

Enchanted Manor (Pangaea) Escape Room
The only room open during our visit was Pangaea, an interactive adventure game that involved board game elements, role-play characters with specific abilities and heavy facilitation by a game master. The whole thing was a pretty new concept to us as we were used to being thrown into a room with a countdown timer to try and figure things out by ourselves. It was an entirely different experience, like playing a game with multiple possible endings that depended on the decisions we made.
As we have come to expect, the puzzles there were well-designed, logical and illuminating (once we figured them out!). I would consider these puzzles to be of a medium level of difficulty. There were a number of carnival-style, kid-friendly games (probably to cater to families with kids) instead of the usual code-deciphering, lock-breaking sort, but we found them rather entertaining nonetheless. No scary elements at all, which is perfect for me. If youโre planning on wearing a dress or skirt, chuck that notion aside and be prepared for some mild physical and flexibility demands towards the end of the experience!
After we completed the game, we were ushered to a nice, chill lounge space to spend the next 30min playing board games or console games. This came with our booking as part of the package. Unfortunately, they didnโt have a wide selection of games to offer. Not sure if theyโre planning to flesh out this space a bit more as it did feel quite sparse and underdeveloped.

Classic Old School Furniture Shop To Visit!
Situated along the streets of Joo Chiat, you will find this gem alongside many other โold schoolโ stores of the shophouses.
Inside the shop, they are mainly selling furnitures made of rattan material which reminded me of the days where my grandparents house is filled with all of these furnitures.

But definitely, I will recommend everyone to come by visit this shop to learn more about the history and culture of Singapore. And who knows, you may fall in love with one of the items and bring one of them home as a wonderful piece of souvenir!

A Kaleidoscope of Heritage: Discovering Joo Chiat Road, Singapore
#singaporetrip
Joo Chiat Road, located in Singaporeโs East Coast district, is a charming neighborhood where rich Peranakan heritage meets a trendy, modern vibe. Known for its colorful shophouses and unique cultural fusion, itโs a destination that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly contemporary.
As I strolled down the road, the iconic pastel-hued Peranakan shophouses immediately caught my eye. Their intricate details, from floral motifs to patterned tiles, offered a glimpse into the artistry of a bygone era. These beautifully preserved buildings provided the perfect backdrop for photos while immersing me in the areaโs historic charm.
Joo Chiat is a foodieโs paradise, and I couldnโt resist sampling the local flavors. I stopped by a traditional bakery to try some freshly made kueh, colorful bite-sized Peranakan treats. Of course, no visit would be complete without tasting the famous Katong laksa, a rich, coconut-based noodle dish bursting with flavor. Each bite was a delicious tribute to the neighborhoodโs culinary legacy.
The neighborhood also offered a mix of quirky boutiques and artisanal shops. From hand-crafted jewelry to modern Peranakan-inspired home dรฉcor, every shop was a treasure trove of unique finds. Walking further, I discovered indie cafes tucked into shophouses, offering a cozy atmosphere to enjoy a cup of coffee while soaking in the vibrant surroundings.
Joo Chiat Roadโs blend of tradition and modernity is its charm. Whether itโs the heritage architecture, the mouthwatering cuisine, or the artistic flair of its boutiques, this neighborhood encapsulates the spirit of Singaporeโdiverse, creative, and deeply rooted in its history. For anyone seeking a quieter yet enriching escape from the cityโs hustle, Joo Chiat Road is a must-visit destination.

Coming up in popularity for their speciality coffees, we just headed down to try them for ourselves today. To be honest, this was the first time I felt specialty coffee was worth the price.
I was pleasantly surprised by both the taste and presentation. they served it almost as if we were at a cocktail bar. finishing off the drink with garnishes and flair.
We got the Bees knees and a comfort warm white coffee.
For the Bees knees, they topped it off with fresh honeycomb and was served beautifully with a clear cube ice. the latte art for the white was nice as well.
taste wise it was really quite unique with fresh fruity tastes and notes. Really recommend trying!
they also will do rotational menus and change things up every 3 months or so.

3 Must-Visit Joo Chiat Cafรฉs on the Go
There are many hidden troves in the East of Singapore, and I am grateful to call this area my home. Living here allows me to indulge in the charm of numerous cafes that dot the neighbourhood.
1. King's Cart Coffee
Among my top picks is King's Cart Coffee, a haven for coffee enthusiasts seeking unique concoctions with a local flair. Some interesting flavours are Pandan Sweet Cream and Sng Buay (Sour Plum). I am not that adventurous when it comes to coffee. My steadfast choice is always the Mocha Bloomโa blend of orange syrup and chocolate flakes. Its nostalgic taste brings back some wonderful childhood memories of unwrapping small rectangular chocolate from orange wrappers.
For the food, I tried their Holiday Specials - Baked Brie. This simple yet exquisite dish features brie topped with roasted garlic, accompanied by toasted bread and a side of fruits. The marriage of garlic and brie creates a delightful savoury symphonyโbuttery and creamy, with that extra hint of a burnt taste, making it the quintessential holiday indulgence.
What sets this cafe apart is its commitment to creating a unique experience, from distinct coffee flavours to the roasting of their own coffee beans. Whether you're a dedicated coffee enthusiast or someone seeking a delightful escape, give King's Cart Coffee a visit. It won't disappoint!

2. Nimbus
My regular visits to Nimbus are always highlighted by their standout charcoal crispy chicken waffle and irresistible spam fries. Each bite of the chicken offers a delightful contrast between its crispy exterior and tender, juicy center, perfectly complemented by the fluffy waffle. And those spam fries? They strike a perfect balance of flavour without overwhelming saltiness, thanks to a light coating of flour.
But Nimbus isn't just about the food; it's an experience in itself. Beyond their culinary prowess, the cafe boasts an impressive skill in latte art. Their talented baristas not only brew exceptional coffee but also transform each cup into a work of art. During my latest visit, I was greeted with the whimsical sight of a beautifully drawn unicorn atop my latteโa delightful touch that truly made my day.

3. Hello Arigato
Recently joining the vibrant stretch of Joo Chiat is Hello Arigato, a minimalist cafรฉ characterised by its whitewashed walls and cemented floors. Its unassuming exterior may easily escape notice as you stroll by, but don't let that fool youโinside, it's a different story altogether.
Despite its simple design, Hello Arigato surprises with its exceptional food and coffee offerings that surpass expectations. During my solo visit, I opted for their outlet exclusive dish, the Ebi Sando, featuring a tiger prawn patty paired with Japanese tartar sauce and tobiko mayo. The fusion of flavours was truly outstanding, particularly the delightful pop of tobiko that added an intriguing texture and elevated the dish to another level.
Turning to their coffee selection, Hello Arigato boasts their own house beans, sourced from the single origin Yiragacheffe region. While its floral and fruity notes shine through, some may find it more suited for black coffee enthusiasts rather than those who prefer a nuttier, bolder brew.

Kohi Coffee Bar is pretty interesting as a small little Coffee bar that is hidden in a wall. You can order and collect your drink through a window. I ordered their basic iced latte but to be honest, there was nothing to shout about as the Coffee tasted kind of flat and lacked a robust flavour. I, however, love this cool concept of a shop in a wall. Price was a little steep. For my iced latte, it cost $7 for a small cup. This is a place not for chilling out but more for a quick coffee fix. There are small benches to sit and that's about it. If you want a cool and interesting coffee bar, then this is the one for you.
