#Jiufen Old Street Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Jiufen Old Street at night 🌙
Talk a walk down Jiufen Old Street at night, and you will be memerised by its beautiful decorations and architecture.
The main attraction in Jiufen at night will be the A-Mei Teahouse. Where locals and tourists will flock to, to take pictures and appreciate its beautiful structure.
Almost everywhere is decorated with red lanterns, quite beautiful
I would recommend dining in at the teahouse for a better view and also good food.
It is not easy to get a table during nighttime, so be early or make a reservation to avoid disappointment.
It's not really accessible as there are stairs everywhere.
Getting There - Jishan St, Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 224
Attractions - A-Mei Tea House

Jiufen Old Street
Jiufen Old Street should be a must-visit for visitors to Taipei. The area was once a gold mining town but now is more famous for its teahouses and scenic views of the mountains and sea. It also apparently inspired the Japanese movie Spirited Away, so there are lots of shops selling Studio Ghibli souvenirs. It is over an hour from the central parts of Taipei, but we found a direct bus here from Ximen station.

Jiufen Old Street with pretty sunset 🌅
Situated in the county of Rueifang, Jiufen is seated in the mid valley.. take the shuttle bus from rueifang train station or a taxi up. Journey takes about 45mins.
It will be a good choice to visit this place after taking a light lunch as you will be able to fit in more snacks from the shops along the way.. best timing is to come at around 2~3pm.. the streets will take about an hour or two to roam (of course depends on your shopping pace) 🤭🤭
After all the foods n shopping, head down to the viewing gallery (or midway viewing spot) for the Sunset. Can check out the sunset timing using your weather app , it’s quite accurate
If you intend to take the public transport, pls take note of the last bus departure timing as it differs during peak and off peak times

A Stairway to Taiwan's Past and Prese
Perched on the slopes of lush mountains in northern Taiwan, Jiufen is a picturesque village that seems to be plucked from the pages of a storybook. With its narrow alleyways, charming tea houses, and stunning vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Jiufen is a treasure trove of beauty and nostalgia that captivates all who visit.
Step into Jiufen's labyrinthine streets and you'll find yourself transported back in time. The village's cobblestone pathways wind through traditional buildings adorned with red lanterns and intricate woodwork, creating an atmosphere of old-world charm. As you stroll through the bustling lanes, you'll encounter shops selling local crafts, art, and the region's famous handmade Taro Balls - a delicious treat that tantalizes the taste buds.
Jiufen's tea houses are a gateway to both relaxation and panoramic views. Sip on freshly brewed oolong tea while gazing out over the mountains and the ocean beyond, allowing the tranquility of the surroundings to wash over you. The view becomes especially enchanting as the sun sets, painting the sky with shades of pink and gold, and the village lights begin to twinkle.
The heart of Jiufen lies in its historic alleys, especially Jiufen Old Street. This bustling marketplace is a sensory delight, where the aroma of street food fills the air. Indulge in local delicacies like fishball soup, herbal pork stew, and savory taro cakes as you explore the myriad of stalls and eateries. At night, the street takes on a magical glow as traditional red lanterns illuminate the way, creating an ambiance that transports you to another era.
Jiufen's most iconic spot is undoubtedly the A-Ma Temple, perched on a hilltop overlooking the village. Dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, this temple exudes an air of serenity and offers stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape and the vast Pacific Ocean. It's a place of quiet reflection, where visitors can pay their respects or simply soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings.
For those seeking a touch of cinematic nostalgia, Jiufen's charm was immortalized in the acclaimed animated film "Spirited Away" by Hayao Miyazaki. Certain elements of the village bear an uncanny resemblance to scenes from the movie, adding an extra layer of enchantment for fans.
Jiufen's allure lies in its ability to transport visitors to a simpler time, where the pace is slow and the beauty is abundant. It's a place to immerse yourself in a blend of culture, history, and natural splendor, leaving you with a sense of wonder and a yearning to return to its timeless embrace. #jiufen #spiritedaway #trip #tea #teahouse #lanterns

Jiufen - 老街
Jiufen is the place to drop by when you going to Shifen to put up sky lantern. We took a bus (965) from 中山北路站 and it takes about an hour and it reaches directly at Jiufen old street.
Jiufen Old Street is a narrow alleyway which have plenty of small food stalls, souvenir shops, and taro dessert and tea houses. You can just explore follow the alleyway to enjoy the upslope walk.
Enjoy a lunch such as Lu Rou Fan, visiting a tea house and enjoy the tea for awhile, and eat the pork sausage while waking around. After which, can stop over at 赖阿婆to have some taro ball soup which is famous in Jiufen. They are made on the spot and they are made in a chewy texture that is likeable by all age. You can choose to have it hot or cold (serve with red and green beans together). It’s a definite must try!
If you are like us that runs out of money in our bus card you can find 7-11 right outside the street.
If you would like to further explore you can continue to take 965 to 金瓜石 or return to Taipei directly via bus 1062 or Ruifang to further explore Shifen.

You can travel to Jiufen via Taxi (45 mins) or Train + Bus (1 hour). You definitely can’t miss this when you’re in Taipei!

#newyearadventure #jiufen #touristsattraction #attractions #shopping #foodie #taiwan #oldstreet #view #historical
Many of you who are looking to make jiufen as your to go to destination in Taiwan and especially if you are driving, parking here is impossible to find in the heart of jiufen unless you go to one of the parking vicinities by the locals where they will charge you quite a high price of about 200 - 300TWD. I recommend to head to the top of Jiufen for free parking or one of the temples here.
Why is Jiufen so popular, simply because this is a shopping and food heaven for all, with the many stall vendors in narrow streets, at different levels of the hilly terrain, you will see endless of these stalls all around you! There are a few popular must try food here loke the grandma taro balls and the teahouses here where you be able to catch a glimpse from above the hilly terrain and a view towards the shores. The entire area is also filled with many old shophouses making this a very authentic traditional feel.
I recommend to head here especially with a clear weather, as the weather here changes quite fast, ensure you check it before heading up here. Because on a clear day the view here us amazing!
The Nightlights of Jiufen Old Street

Jiufen Old Street is a very popular tourists destination both in the morning and the night. Morning you be able tobsee unblocked view from the top of the mountain whenever the sky is clear. And the the night, its a whole new different story.
When the sun sets, you be able to see the many lights being lighted on the buildings situated among the hills. And as this is situated in a hilly terrain there are insane amount of steps, where there is an area somewhere in the middle of the old street, you be greeted woth rows and rows of latterns being decorated from the top to the bottom making this a very beautiful sight to see.
Trust me, there will be alot of ppl here taking many photo instaworthy shots here. Its worth the climb!
Must Eat Food at JiuFen Old Street Taiwan
JiuFen is a popular attraction in Taipei. It is located on top of a mountain with a scenic view. There are a lot of yummy Taiwanese street foods. Some of my favourites include yam and sweet potato balls dessert, deep fried king mushrooms, Bak Wan (meat ball with chewy glutinous rice skin topped with thick sauce), assorted Kueh resembled Nyonya Kueh in Singapore and Malaysia. In order to get there, you would need to take the train from Taipei Main Station to Ruifang Station, and then the bus from Ruifang Station to Jiufen. The whole journey will take about 1 hour.

Spirited Away Town in Taiwan 🪄
Have you watched Spirited Away, a movie by Ghibli?
Well, you can find it in Jiufen, Taipei.
Jiufen is famous for its similarity to the village from this movie. This town also draws crowds and attention of tourists wanting to see this mountain overlooking the sea. Alleyways that twist up the mountainside comes with the glow of lantern lights, makes this town become alive and magical!
To see the Spirited Away Town lookalike, you have to find A-Mei Tea House for a better view.
Have an enchanted day, folks!
Evening captures of 九份老街
#九份老街 #taipei #taiwan
It rained that entire day in Taipei, but we decided that shouldn’t hinder our visit to 九份for the beautiful evening lights 🏮Although some shops were already closed for the day, we had the advantage of traipsing up the narrow stairway alleys in the absence of jostling touristy crowds due to the wet weather ☔️
Take a trip to the 1900s
The area used to be a gold mining town but is now a main tourist destination. Make sure you get the taro balls - the sweetness and chewiness is just chef kisses. Oh, and did I forget to mention that Studio Ghibli’s famous Spirited Away took inspiration from this village?! The old alleyways packed with food and souvenir shops paired with the aesthetics of a 19th century busy town makes this destination a must visit in Taiwan! #gooutside #juifen
Jiufen old street (Taiwan)
Took a day trip using klook to visit the must visit location of jiufen & shifen!
As we went during April, it was supposed to be quite chilly, however, we actually face 35 deg celcius temperature almost everyday in taiwan during the week of visit.
So when visiting jiufen, please bring along a jacket as it had nice chilly weather up there for us to escape the heat. Jiufen is quite popular with its beef noodle & icecream popiah that’s filled with vanilla icecream & peanuts!
there’s so much to do at jiufen i think you can spend a comfortable 4-5 hours there, either for tea or for food, or for the culture experience.

Charming Mountain Town- Jiufen by Night II🌚✨
I wanted to do justice to this charming mountain town, so here’s what you can expect to see at night while wandering in Jiufen’s popular old street! The old architecture, the alleys and all the shops, restaurants, teahouses etc make Jiufen an incredible place to visit! The streets are decorated with lanterns, thus adding more beauty to this place once they’re all lit up! 😍🏮✨
It’s nearly impossible to get a picture without the crowd 😬 especially in the evening/ night when most people are looking for restaurants to dine. The place is packed with restaurants offering a taste of local food. I came across several shops with artists. I had a chat with one of them who lives there and earns a living from his products. Please support local artists if you want to buy unique souvenirs! 🙂
When you’re about to get spirited away but no, beautiful places deserve beautiful pictures. The town Jiufen in Taiwan inspired Hayao Miyazaki's signature film 'Spirited Away’. An Old Street with a Tea House. Pretty magical! ❤️

Spent a great day exploring Chiufen, which is a great spot to try Taiwanese street food & snacks, as well as to pick up fun souvenirs. It was a rainy day, but the narrow streets with overhanging buildings & awnings offered a little protection from the mist. It was easily accessible from Taipei, with plenty of busses, taxis & Ubers available. The views over the bay are stunning.

Jiufen Old Street is full of various shops, eating, playing, trendy, retro, long streets are full of nostalgic atmosphere, perhaps too commercial, but also become a nine must-have card Featured items!
Many handmade shops here, each item is original design, unique!
There are many selling thousands of Chihiro dolls. In fact, Grandpa Palace said that the inspiration for the "Mysterious City" of Spirited Away is based on the Edo Tokyo Building Park, not nine copies! However, this gimmick really attracted a lot of young people to play.
Food, is not missed in Jiufen Old Street, all kinds of rounds are a major feature here!
"Alan"'s gimmick group
"lazy apo" round
has visited the "oil onion"
60-year-old shop "fish ball Bo Zi "
ate a circle, the belly is almost full!
Transportation: From Taipei to Jiufen, it is more convenient to take the 1062 bus, passing through Ruifang Railway Station, Jiufen Old Street, and the terminal station is Jinguashi.
I thought about going to Jiufen for a cup of tea before I went. I thought today that this decision was very alert. Instead of "enjoying" the crowd on the old streets where people are enjoying the crowd, it is better to sit in the window of the well-known Amei Tea House. Amei Tea House is at the end of the ramp, and a row of red lanterns hanging on wooden buildings is conspicuous. People don't need to look for it to see it. I thought it would be crowded with tourists, but it was a very clean place. There are two face expressions at the door that are quite intriguing. It is in line with the faint mystery of Jiufen.
It was an afternoon with a warm afternoon sun, although the distant mountains were hazy, sitting indoors and feeling that everything was illuminated by the warm sun. There is a big cockroach at the foot of each table, and there is carbon in it. A darkened kettle braved white smoke and made a squeaking sound. The waiter poured a cup of oolong for us. We chatted with a few special snacks and tea, which was very pleasant. I heard that this restaurant, Miyazaki, has also visited, and is very famous. When leaving, the valley of Jiufen is still hidden in the clouds, as if the sunset is separated from it forever.
A "Sad City" made Jiufen a small town and entered the people's field of vision. The old house, layered and stacked along the foothills. In front of the eyes, the mountains and seas are staggered like ink. As the raging crowd marched forward, sweating and eating a bowl of steaming dry mix powder, and then a sleek sweet glutinous rice, just at the beginning of the Hua Deng, the twilight fell slightly. The fishing boats in the distance are a little bit bright, and the people in the vicinity are flashing with fireworks. This is the most beautiful moment of the day.

Step into the World of Spirited Away - A Travelogue of Jiufen Old Street in Taipei
Why is it called Jiufen? According to the 'Taipei County Annals', Jiufen was a small village in the early Qing Dynasty, inhabited by only nine families. These nine families would 'divide into nine shares' every time they purchased various daily necessities or fish, and over time, the place was named Jiufen. Later on, Jiufen became the name of the village and has been used to this day.
🌟Highlight Feature: Jiufen is a mountain town, with houses scattered along the steep slopes in an orderly fashion, creating a layered and distinct landscape. At night, it becomes even more charming, reminiscent of Lijiang in Yunnan, China. However, compared to the bustling nightlife of Lijiang, it is much quieter here.
🌟Highlight Feature: There are many coffee shops in Jiufen, and the song 'Coffee Shop in Jiufen' by Taiwanese singer Chen Qiuzhen is inspired by this place.
🌟Highlight Feature: The entire Jiufen Old Street is the most lively place I visited in Taipei, where you can deeply feel the attraction that comes from the bloodline.
🍽Dining Recommendation: Jiufen's nostalgic atmosphere naturally inherits many delicacies, such as taro balls. In addition to the original sweet potato and taro flavors, there are also special matcha, sesame, and yam flavors, suitable for both hot and cold weather.
🍽Dining Recommendation: Don't go to a restaurant for a meal, just grab some snacks and eat while you stroll. Recommended are Lai A Po Taro Balls or A Ying Red Yeast Meat Balls.
✅Must Experience: A Mei Teahouse, the best place to view the scenery in the entire Jiufen Old Street. Be sure to choose a small table by the edge, order some tea and snacks, and overlook the scenery of the port below.
🧳Pre-trip Preparation: Watch Hou Hsiao-hsien's 'A City of Sadness' before you go. You can see scenes from the movie all over the old street, and you'll understand that the movie was filmed for Jiufen Old Street.
🗓Itinerary Suggestion: It is recommended to start exploring in the afternoon and continue until the evening. This way, you can enjoy the food and tea from various shops, as well as capture the most beautiful night scenes after sunset. 🌃
🚉Transportation Tips: There are buses from Taipei city to Jiufen Old Street. It is recommended for friends visiting Taipei to buy a Taipei bus card, which features various cartoon characters and is very collectible.
⏳Visiting Hours: 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM
💰Average Spending: 300 yuan per person, there is no admission fee, and the money is mainly spent on teahouses and snacks, which are a bit expensive.
