I've been to the Goguryeo Tombs Complex three times and finally figured it out.
Here's a guide to visiting the Goguryeo Tombs Complex:
Preliminary Understanding and Preparation
• Opening hours: May 1–October 8, 08:00–17:00, last entry 17:00; October 9–April 30 of the following year, 08:30–16:00, last entry 16:00.
• Ticket information: Full-price combined ticket for three scenic spots: CNY 70/person. Some visitors are eligible for half-price or free tickets with valid IDs.
• Transportation guide: You can go to Ji'an City first, and then take a taxi or local bus to the scenic spot. If you are driving, navigate to the parking lot of the scenic spot.
Main Attractions
• Goguryeo Cultural Relics Exhibition Center: The exhibition, titled "Exhibition of Goguryeo Historical Relics," displays over 1,000 cultural relics. It provides a comprehensive and intuitive understanding of the architectural features, production and life, military level, culture and art, and religious beliefs of the Goguryeo period when Ji'an was the capital.
• Tomb of King Gwanggaeto the Great (King Jangsu): This is the tomb of Gwanggaeto the Great (King Jangsu), the 20th king of Goguryeo. It is a square, stepped stone chamber tomb with a truncated pyramid shape, known as the "Pyramid of the East." Its perfect design and exquisite stone craftsmanship represent the pinnacle of Goguryeo's stone-built tomb structures.
• Gwanggaeto Stele: This is a memorial monument to King Gwanggaeto the Great (King Damdeok), the 19th king of Goguryeo. It is carved from a single piece of breccia tuff and inscribed with Chinese characters on all four sides. It has 44 lines and 1,775 characters, serving as an important example of the transition from clerical script to regular script in Chinese calligraphy. The inscription is of great historical value.
• Wushan Tombs: The Tomb No. 5 of the Five Helmet Tombs is the only mural tomb open to the public. The inner walls are covered with colorful paintings, including the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise, corresponding to the four cardinal directions. The paintings are known for their vibrant colors and flowing lines, earning the site the title of "Dunhuang of Northeast Asia."
• Wandu Mountain City: Originally named "Weina Rock City," it was built in the third year of Yuanshi in the Western Han Dynasty (3 AD). It is one of the famous city sites of the early and middle Goguryeo period. You can walk along the city walls, experience the military defense system of that time, and admire the architectural structure of the mountain city and the surrounding natural scenery.
Tour Route Planning
You can visit the sites in the following order: Goguryeo Cultural Relics Exhibition Center—Tomb of King Gwanggaeto the Great (King Jangsu)—Gwanggaeto Stele—Wushan Tombs—Wandu Mountain City. If time permits, after visiting the scenic spots, you can go to Huopen Street in Ji'an City to taste local specialties such as the Goguryeo hot pot. You can also visit the Big Guitar Square, a filming location for the movie "Sewing Machine Band," and enjoy the scenery of North Korea across the Yalu River.
