Especially when paddling to Lokrum Island and Betina Cave, the natural scenery is breathtaking. The view on the sea at sunset is particularly stunning, making it hard to leave. According to the legend, it was at this small but beautiful island that Richard I, the Lionheart, found salvation from a shipwreck, when returning in 1192 from a crusade. Besides this historical mark and the beautiful monastery built after this salvation, Lokrum is an incredible and gifted island: Dead Sea, where you can feel the properties of the salt, great landscapes, a lot of natures and its animals, like peacocks, a monastery and much much more. Located near Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island is a lush, uninhabited island. It is about a 15-minute ride by regular ferry from the Old Town port and is known for its nudist beach and resident peacocks, making it a popular day-trip destination. Although uninhabited, the island does have facilities for tourists. However, it is recommended to bring your own water and food. For those who prefer not to visit the nudist beach, there are regular swimming spots available, so no need to worry! 😊 I personally swam at a rocky area rather than a sandy beach. The seawater was incredibly clear and beautiful. Since the island is mostly rocky, walking barefoot can be dangerous, so beach sandals are a must. The island is home to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery that dates back to the 11th century, which remain stunningly picturesque to this day. Sitting on the balcony of the homestay, Lokrum Island is right before your eyes. The elderly landlady suggested we visit the island. Ferries depart from Dubrovnik's old harbor to the island every half hour from 7 AM to 7 PM, costing 30 euros. Overnight stays are not allowed on the island, as the entire place is a natural forest reserve. I only explored near the pier, where there's a small botanical garden, a children's playground, an "Emerald Lake," and of course, restaurants and shops. Many tourists head straight to a flat area extending into the sea to sunbathe and swim. Others hike to the island's highest point. Some join guided kayaking tours between Dubrovnik and the island. Few, like me, return after just an hour.
