The scenic area started in the Northern and Southern Dynasties and has a history of more than 1,600 years. It was called "Huayan Temple" in the Song Dynasty and was named "Lingying Temple" by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty.
The Xianren Cliff Scenic Area is composed of three cliffs, five peaks, and six major temples. The three cliffs are the east cliff, west cliff, and south cliff. Tianshui Tourism|Don't Miss Xianren Cliff in Maiji Mountain
Xianren Cliff in Tianshui was once a sanctuary for scholars and poets to retreat and cultivate themselves. It is said to be named after ancient sages who secluded themselves here and attained immortality. This is a severely underrated scenic spot in Tianshui, combining natural scenery, religious culture, and humanistic landscapes. It is part of the Maiji Mountain Grottoes and should not be missed. After visiting Maiji Mountain, there is a direct shuttle bus (8 yuan/person) from the parking lot, which is very convenient.
Recommended Route:
Xianren Lake → Qianfo Cliff (South Cliff) → Sheli Cliff (South Cliff) → Luohan Hall (East Cliff) → Mozhen Hall (West Cliff) → Niangniang Hall (West Cliff) → Lingying Temple (West Cliff)
🌟 The statues on the South Cliff were carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty and rebuilt during the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties. The statues represent the Thousand Buddhas of the Worthy Kalpa. Most of them have been lost over time, with only a faint image of the Buddha and his son remaining. To the left of the South Cliff is Sheli Cliff.
🌟 At the foot of the East Cliff, there is a group of ancient buildings from the Ming Dynasty called Luohan Hall, next to Guanyin Spring. Northeast of the East Cliff, there is Ladder Cave, 9.2 meters above the ground, accessible by a high ladder. It consists of Shilian Cave, Sanfo Cave, and Luojia Cave. Inside the caves, there are statues of long-haired immortals, the Three Buddhas, descendants of Zhu Yuanzhang, and Qing Dynasty calligrapher Wang Liaowang, as well as some murals.
🌟 At the foot of the West Cliff, there are 14 ancient buildings built along the cliff, embedded under a semicircular cliff, arranged in a row, grand and magnificent, awe-inspiring. These buildings, from east to west, mainly include Pilu Hall, Lingying Temple, Wenshu Hall, Guanyin Hall, Sanqing Hall, Caishen Hall, Dizang Hall, and Sanjiao Hall. They are collectively known as Lingying Temple, the essence of Xianren Cliff.
🌈 Scenic Spot Features: The architectural complex of Xianren Cliff was built and renovated by various dynasties after the Northern Wei Dynasty. The layout of the buildings follows the mountain's terrain, mostly in the form of cliff-side houses. The statues and murals here are beautifully shaped and well-preserved, reflecting the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.
🎟️ Ticket Information: Tickets are 40 yuan/person, and the round-trip electric car is 10 yuan/person.
🕐️ Scenic Spot Opening Hours: Summer 08:00-17:30; Winter 09:00-17:00
💗 Other Tips: There may not be sufficient dining facilities within the scenic area, so bring enough water and food; the terrain is complex, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes while touring.
👍 Most Recommended: Xianren Cliff, a place that evokes imagination just by hearing its name! Whether it's the mountains, waters, or temples, it's worth a visit. Here is a time-saving and practical guide for everyone, recommended for collection.
🚩 Travel Route!
▶️ A: Shuttle Bus Stop → Xianren Lake → Thousand-Hand Guanyin Hall → South Cliff → (Pass by T-junction, left to West Cliff, right to East Cliff, go to East Cliff first as it's a shorter route) → Arhat Hall → East Cliff → Needle Grinding Hall → Wuliang Hall (Offering Pearl Peak) → Jade Emperor Hall (Sleeping Buddha Cave) → Niangniang Hall → West Cliff → Baogai Peak → Shuttle Bus Stop (gentle ascent, steep descent)
▶️ B: Ascent - West Cliff - East Cliff - South Cliff - Xianren Lake - Descent (steep ascent, gentle descent)
❤️ Suggest choosing A, saves climbing 500 steps, easier ascent.
🌟 Highlights: Xianren Cliff Scenic Area consists of three cliffs (East Cliff, West Cliff, South Cliff), five peaks (Jade Emperor Peak, East Cliff Peak, West Cliff Peak, Baogai Peak, Offering Pearl Peak), six temples (Mulan Temple, Shilian Temple, Tielian Temple, Hualian Temple, Shuilian Temple, Lingying Temple), and Xianren Lake. It preserves 27 Ming and Qing dynasty halls, 54 houses, 197 statues from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and 83 square meters of murals. The scenic area is known for its majestic mountains, beautiful waters, steep cliffs, and dense forests, making it a renowned religious 'holy land' combining Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, historically known as the first paradise in Qinzhou. Among them:
1. South Cliff, also known as Thousand Buddha Cliff, mainly features carved caves. The Rulai Hall and Thousand-Hand Guanyin Hall are built on the cliff. During the Northern Wei period, over a thousand small Buddha niches were carved on the natural cliff wall behind the hall, each containing a small Buddha statue with different expressions, similar to the small thousand Buddhas in Cave 133 of Maijishan Grottoes. Unfortunately, after a cliff fire in 1958, most of the statues were damaged, but some remnants of the hanging Buddha statues still remain.
2. East Cliff has an Arhat Hall built under the cliff, with half of the courtyard covered by the mountain. It houses a large Buddha and eighteen Arhats, dating back to the Ming dynasty. Along the way up, there are seven white towers with elements of Tibetan Buddhism. Further inside, there is a cliff pavilion-style grotto with some small grottoes and Buddha statues, mostly in ruins. The small stairs are steep and challenging to climb.
3. West Cliff, the core of the scenic area, features a suspended rock resembling an upside-down farm sieve, forming a semi-circular natural grotto below, 116 meters long and 20 meters deep at its deepest point. A row of halls is built under the crescent-shaped cliff edge. From west to east, there are Lingying Temple's Dharma Circulation Office, Three Officials Hall, Three Teachings Hall, Cihang Hall, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Hall, Wealth God Hall, Three Pure Ones Hall, Guanyin Hall, Manjushri Hall, Shakyamuni Hall, and Virocana Hall, totaling 14 temples and 36 halls.
4. From Needle Grinding Hall to Jade Emperor Hall, you can see a series of peaks rising from the clouds, known as the 'Eighteen Arhats Worshiping the Jade Emperor' scene. Further down, there is a relatively hidden 'Sleeping Buddha Cave' that many people overlook. The Sleeping Buddha has a peaceful expression, kind face, vivid shape, and lifelike disciples behind him, enhanced by colors.
🎫 Ticket: 40 yuan/person, shuttle bus 10 yuan/round trip (2 km ride, you can also walk if you have time).
🚉 Transportation Guide: Xianren Cliff is in Houchuan Village, Maiji Mountain Town, Tianshui, about 17 km from Maijishan Grottoes. You can take bus routes 34, 37, or 39 from the city center. After visiting Maijishan Grottoes, you can take a minibus to Xianren Cliff from Stop 3, 8 yuan/person. After visiting Xianren Cliff, you can also visit Jingtusi Temple, which is highly recommended!
⏳ Playtime: About 2.5 hours.
🍽 Food Recommendation: There are many farmhouses near Xianren Cliff offering local specialties like Jiangshui noodles, fish, cold noodles, and handmade noodles.
🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: After visiting Maiji Mountain and Xianren Cliff, including Jingtusi Temple, you can return to Tianshui city for accommodation, allowing you to explore Tianshui Ancient City or the night market at night, experiencing the city's charm. Alternatively, you can stay at Maiji Mountain Hot Spring Hotel, enjoy a hot spring bath at night to relieve the day's fatigue, and be fully refreshed the next day!

⛰【Travel Guide】
📍Detailed address: Xianrenya, Maijishan Scenic Area
🚗Transportation guide: Take bus No. 34/¥5 to Jiajiahe Hantang Pottery Art bus station, then walk 50 meters across the street to the platform to transfer to bus No. 37/¥7
Tell the driver when you get on, so he can remind you to get off at your stop.
It's better to take bus No. 34 around 12:00 PM to transfer to bus No. 37, after waiting for almost an hour, the bus finally arrived at 13:30. Bus No. 37 has fewer departures and longer intervals, but I found the driving of the drivers on this route to be really steady.
🕙Opening hours: 8:00-17:30
💰Ticket price: Full-time primary, secondary, and high school students with a student ID, half price
Children: Free for those under 1.2 meters (inclusive); half price for those between 1.2 meters (exclusive) and 1.5 meters (exclusive)
Elderly: Free for non-local seniors aged 70 (inclusive) and above with a senior citizen card or ID card, or local seniors aged 60 (inclusive) and above with a senior citizen card or ID card; half price for non-local seniors aged 60 (inclusive) to 70 (exclusive)
🌟Highlights: Xianrenya is known for its towering mountains, beautiful waters, rugged cliffs, and dense forests. The natural scenery is exquisite, and the cultural landscape is second only to the Maijishan area. Temples and shrines, as well as grotto niches, are often built on the soaring peaks or the recessed cliffs. Since the Northern and Southern Dynasties, successive generations have built architecture and sculpted statues here, but unfortunately, many have been damaged, and few remain.
Xianrenya consists of three cliffs, five peaks, and six temples. The three cliffs are the East Cliff, West Cliff, and South Cliff; the five peaks are Yuhuang Peak, Baogai Peak, Xianzhu Peak, East Cliff Peak, and West Cliff Peak; the six temples are Mulian Temple, Shilian Temple, Tielian Temple, Hualian Temple, Shuilian Temple, and Lingying Temple, with Lingying Temple also being the general name for Xianrenya.
📌Little Tips: 1. The wait for bus No. 37 is very long, so if you're in a hurry, make sure to allow plenty of time (I waited for more than half an hour)
2. Have change ready. Bus No. 37 charges based on the distance traveled, but Alipay's electronic ride code charges a flat fee of 7 yuan.
3. When transferring from bus No. 37 to No. 34 at Xianrenya, make sure not to swipe your card on bus No. 37; 3 yuan will get you to the transfer point.
4. It's the peak tourist season recently, so to see the special caves and avoid the crowds, I booked a hostel inside the Maijishan Scenic Area, planning to visit the grottoes early the next day.
5. The last bus No. 37 departs at 18:45

Gansu Tianshui | Xianren Cliff | Deep mountain cliff
🎈Maiji Mountain Scenic Area consists of five sub-scenic areas: Maiji Mountain Grottoes, Xianren Cliff, Stone Gate, Qu Creek, and Jieting Hot Springs. After visiting the Maiji Mountain Grottoes, we took a taxi to Xianren Cliff 15 kilometers away. We passed through 18 bends in the mountain road. The driver's driving skills were quite good, and we didn't get carsick. Xianren Cliff Scenic Area is composed of three cliffs, five peaks, six temples, and a Xianren Lake. It takes about 2 hours to climb down.
🕙Opening hours: 8:00-17:30
⌚️Tour time: 12:30-14:50
💰Ticket price: 20 yuan/person
🚗Scenic area bus: round trip 10 yuan/person
The recommended route for the scenic area is to go up the stone stairs (the stone stairs are steep and long), and down by the lake. Because we climbed the Maiji Mountain Grottoes in the morning and were already exhausted, we entered the mountain from the lake side, climbed the mountain slowly, and finally descended the mountain by the stone stairs. This route is for your reference.
On the mountain of Xianren Cliff Scenic Area, you can still see clear mud sculptures and stupas in the grottoes. Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism have coexisted and developed together here for a long time, showing a unique aspect of religious culture. The scenic area has spectacular Danxia caves, Danxia sharp mountains, Danxia long cliffs and other Danxia landforms, combining the grandeur of the north and the beauty of the south.
According to the identification of the Central Culture Department's survey team in 1953, the existing temples here are buildings and renovations from the Tang, Song, Ming, Qing and other dynasties, and some of the mud sculptures are works from the late Northern Wei Dynasty. For a long time, this has been a scenic spot where Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism coexist.
