Senbudo Cave Hell Gorge in Kosanji Temple
#Spring0yenTrip
Senbutsu-do Jigokukyo, located in the grounds of Kosanji Temple, is a cave exploration course that depicts the world of hell. It is a thrilling spot with a total length of about 150 meters, where King Enma and demons of hell await you in terrifying forms.
Access:
By public transportation, take a bus from JR Onomichi Station for about an hour and get off at the "Kosanji" bus stop. Like Miraishinoka, it is located in the grounds of Kosanji Temple. If you are using the Shimanami Kaido, it is about a 15-minute drive from Ikuchijima IC. You can use the parking lot (paid) at Kosanji Temple. After checking in at Kosanji Temple, follow the signs to find the entrance.
Attractions:
The biggest attraction of Senbutsu-do Jigokukyo is its realistic and powerful depiction of hell. The inside of the cave is dimly lit and there are some slippery areas, so you can experience the feeling of exploring. The life-sized demon statues and the tortured deceased may be a little scary for children, but it will be a valuable experience in visually understanding the concept of hell in Buddhism.
The Thirty-Three Kannon statues and Jizo Bodhisattva statues are also enshrined in the cave, and even in the horror of hell, there is a sense of salvation and mercy. In addition, Buddhist tales and explanations about hell are posted on the walls, so it has an educational element that is different from a simple haunted house. Near the exit, there is a bright space reminiscent of paradise, and one of the attractions is the feeling of freedom from hell.
Recommended places:
Here are some recommended points to enjoy Senbudo Jigokukyo even more.
* Careful observation: Take your time to observe the expressions of each demon and the suffering of the deceased. You will be amazed by the craftsmen's attention to detail and the high level of expressiveness.
* Read the explanations as you proceed: By reading the explanations written on the walls, you can understand the meaning of each hell and Buddhist teachings.
* Feel the light at the exit: After walking through the dimly lit cave, the brightness of the exit is exceptional. Return to the outside world feeling the hope of surviving hell and heading to paradise.
* Visit Kosanji Temple and Miraishin no Oka: By experiencing the gorgeous architectural beauty of Kosanji Temple and the fantastical scenery of Miraishin no Oka, you can enjoy the charm of Kosanji Temple even more deeply. The contrast between hell and paradise, modern art and traditional architecture is also interesting.
Senbudo Jigoku Gorge is a slightly unusual tourist spot that is not only entertaining, but also allows you to come into contact with Buddhist teachings and views on life and death. Why not be brave and explore the world of hell?
