[Saitama Prefecture] One of the three major icicles in Chichibu! Ice art "Misotsuchi Icicles"
The Misotsuchi Icicles are a scenic spot in Okuchichibu, Saitama Prefecture, and are one of the three great icicles in Chichibu.
Saitama Prefecture does not generally get much snow in the winter, but the Okuchichibu area is the only area where it snows.
It is particularly cold from January to February, when temperatures drop below freezing.
The Misotsuchi Icicles are natural icicles created by cooling spring water seeping out of the rock surface.
They are large-scale ice art that is about 8m high and 30m wide.
However, to be precise, some of the icicles are natural, while the rest are created by artificial water discharge.
In recent years, the icicles have not been able to form well due to the warm winters, and the icicle festival itself has not been held in some years. However, the winter of 2025 is forecast to be very cold, so you may be able to see some spectacular icicles.
The icicle festival season is from early January to late February, and beautiful lighting will be displayed from the evening.
Admission is 200 yen for adults (junior high school students and above) as an environmental improvement contribution.
During the festival, a rest area and cafe with snacks will be open at the entrance.
It's on the riverbank, and the temperature is high enough to form icicles, so your body will be quite cold.
Take careful measures to protect yourself from the cold.
Also, although it's not well known,
at the very end of the icicle viewing area, a spring of Iwashimizu springs up, which is incredibly beautiful!
