[2025 Fukui Attraction] Travel Guide for Ichijōdani Asakura Ruins (Updated Mar)

Not easy to get to but well worth the trip if you are into Japanese history and can speak and understand a even a little Japanese. This is the site of a castletown that flourished deep in the mountains and nothing remained. Now there are a number of reconstructed residences and a large portion of the site has been excavated showing pillars, walls, wells, and so forth. A small museum has relics of medieval life. There is a small waterfall called 'Ichijo-daki' deep in the woods, about 3 km from Ichijodani Asakura Ruins. It is quite small waterfalls compared to other waterfalls I’ve visited but definitely worth a visit. #givethanks #givethanks

#0yentripnovember We went to the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture. The remains of the castle town and mansion that was ruled by the Asakura Clan, a feudal lord, for 100 years until it was destroyed by Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period. The castle town, which was so prosperous that it was called the Little Kyoto of the Hokuriku region, was abandoned after the Asakura Clan's downfall and was buried under mud for 400 years. When you see the restored area, you'll be amazed at how well-maintained the town was, with toilets and wells. The level of civilization is amazing. It's called the Pompeii of Japan, and was apparently used as a location for a commercial starring Yoshinaga Sayuri, so the older men were very interested. #japantrip Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins is one of the most worthwhile attractions in Fukui. Due to the inconvenient transportation of the ruins, we took a bus to the Ichijodani Asakura Family museum and borrowed bicycles from the museum. The deposit for each bicycle was 1000 yen, and would be refunded after the bicycle was returned. In fact, museum also provided free shuttle service. The staffs of the museum were very kind and patiently guided us to the ruins.
