Natural scenery
The Rhino Rock is located on the east coast of the Vatnes Peninsula in northwest Iceland. It is a basalt sea stack about 15 meters high and is named for its unique shape. There are two holes at the bottom of the rock. From a distance, it looks like a rhinoceros drinking water in the sea. Some people also call it "elephant trunk stone" or "stone beast absorbing water" . Hvítserkur was originally a volcanic plug. Due to long-term erosion by sea water, the surrounding rocks gradually disappeared, leaving only this isolated rock pillar. To prevent it from collapsing, local residents poured concrete at the bottom of the rock in the 1960s to reinforce it. Hvítserkur means "white shirt" in Icelandic and is named after the white excrement of seabirds that covers the rock surface all year round. It is a habitat for many kinds of seabirds, including seagulls, cormorants and fulmars, and is also a popular spot for bird-watching enthusiasts. Hvítserkur is the result of an Icelandic legend in which a giant monster attempted to destroy the bell of a nearby monastery, but was struck by the sunlight at dawn and turned into a pillar of stone. This story symbolizes the spread of Christianity in Iceland .
