Buriram: Discover the Hidden Gems of Thailand's East, the "City of Happiness"
Located in northeastern Thailand, bordering Cambodia, Buriram Province is known as the "City of Happiness." This low-key and less-traveled destination holds hidden wonders waiting to be discovered.
As the "City of Stone Sanctuaries," Buriram is dotted with Khmer-style stone temples. Phanom Rung Historical Park, built on an extinct volcano in the 11th century, is the largest and best-preserved Khmer-style stone temple in Thailand. Every year during the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sunrise illuminates the main tower's doorway, creating a sacred and spectacular sight. Seven kilometers away, Prasat Muang Tam, built on a laterite base with sandstone upper structures, stands as a testament to a thousand years of history, exuding mystery and solemnity.
Buriram is also known as the "City of Sports." Buriram United Football Club is renowned…
Travel Guide to Aranyaprathet, Thailand
📍Typically, travelers enter Thailand through the Aranyaprathet border crossing from Poipet, Cambodia. Most people continue directly to Bangkok by bus, which is convenient if you purchase a through ticket from Siem Reap to Bangkok. A few people choose the slower train journey from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok.
📍I recommend traveling from Aranyaprathet to lesser-known destinations in eastern Thailand, such as Buriram or Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat). After crossing the border, I headed to the previously researched bus stop for Pattaya (there are direct buses from Aranyaprathet to Pattaya) and inquired about buses to Buriram. A young man on a motorbike led me to the bus station 1.8 km north of the border crossing and charged me 100 THB (a bit pricey). Arriving at the station at 9:50 am, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bus to Buriram via Nang Rong departing at 10:30 am! This bus station also has buses to Nakhon Ratchasima. Although I couldn't understand the language and didn't ask about the schedule, I suspect that these two relatively close provinces have frequent bus services to Aranyaprathet.
📍It took less than three hours to reach Nang Rong. Unlike minibuses, large buses can only stop at designated bus stations and not on demand.
📍Nang Rong's main attractions are Phanom Rung Historical Park and Muang Tam, sometimes referred to as "Little Angkor Wat." While they may not compare to the grandeur of Angkor, they are authentic ancient sites with fewer tourists and less commercialization, enhancing the overall experience. As both sites are about 30 km from Nang Rong, you'll need to hire a car or rent a motorbike. I rented a motorbike for 300 THB per day from P. California, where I stayed. Be cautious on the short stretch of mountain road and drive slowly.
📍Nang Rong itself is a laid-back and quiet town. The residential area feels like a small town in southern China, perhaps due to a significant Chinese community. The Nang Rong night market is fantastic, with diverse food stalls offering unique snacks. The satay, pork leg rice, and fried egg cakes (similar to dried tofu) are all incredibly delicious.

Hotel de I'amour Buriram review
#Romantic accommodation #Buriram hotel
The other day I traveled to Buriram and went to Phanom Rung Historical Park, so I had the opportunity to stop by the hotel. It was worth it because the price was not expensive. When I stayed, it was around 1,600 baht, including breakfast. The hotel's name is Hotel de la Mour. The room was designed in a loft style but was very modern and beautiful. The bed was soft and comfortable. There was a large swimming pool here, so I could swim to my heart's content.
As for the breakfast, it was okay. It was delicious and quite good. It was worth the price. If I have the chance to come to Buriram again, I will definitely stay here again.

Prasat Muang Tam is located on the plains below Prasat Phanom Rung. It was built by royal craftsmen, contemporary with Prasat Phanom Rung, to offer to Lord Shiva, according to Hindu beliefs.
It is no less beautiful than any other stone castle in Thailand. When you come to see it, you will feel the greatness of the ancient civilization.

Prasat Muang Tam is a language not far from Prasat Khao Phanom Rung. We were going back home via Sa Kaeo, so we saw the sign for Prasat Muang Tam, so we stopped by to take a look.
The castle itself is quite grand. I think it is similar to Prasat Khao Phanom Rung, but it is not on a mountain. It is also close to the people's homes.

A tourist attraction that we look at, stay with while relaxing
Countless value, priceless

He also opened up the beautiful side of life easily and gave energy for a holiday
And I don't know how long we have tomorrow... according to the lyrics
The voice in my head told me to stay here, have good friendships with
The elements that make us breathe, stand in this place for a while
Because time will not turn back and this memory
It's probably not going to go down the same groove, even if it comes again in the future.

Prasat Muang Tam, ancient Khmer civilization
When you arrive in Buriram Province, you must visit both stone castles. It is recommended to visit Prasat Muang Tam first and then go to Prasat Hin Phanom Rung.
- There is a parking lot, it is not difficult to find. After walking from the parking lot, cross the road and you will see a large sign that says Prasat Muang Tam.
- Prasat Muang Tam is a Hindu religious site. The entrance fee for Thais is 20 baht.
- The interesting thing about this place is that it is still unknown who built it. Therefore, its history is interesting. It is recommended to study or watch historical YouTube before visiting to enhance your trip.
- Personally, I like the 4 inner ponds, which are built symmetrically. It is amazing for the design in ancient times. There are fewer tourists than Prasat Hin Phanom Rung.

I came here on a weekday. There were no people. It was quiet, lonely, and a bit desolate because most people were concentrated in Phanom Rung.
This place has a charm that is no less than Phanom Rung. It is just a little bit closer. It would be good to come visit here.
It is also good to visit when there are fewer people. You can take pictures without people in the open area. It gives a different kind of feeling.

There is an entrance fee of 20 baht, but there are many beautiful places to take pictures inside. If anyone comes, I recommend going to Phanom Rung Stone Castle first. On the way back, stop by Muang Tam Castle so that it is not too hot.
There are many ancient sculptures inside to take pictures of. I arrived at around 11:00. There were not many people. The inside is clean and there is no trash. Seniors can enter for free.
I am a little disappointed that there were no lotus flowers when I went. If I go when there are lotus flowers, it will be very beautiful.
Muang Tam Stone Castle
Prasat Muang Tam, Buriram Province
👍It is one of the groups of Prasat Markko. It is a religious site built according to the beliefs of Hinduism. It is assumed that it was built to dedicate to Lord Shiva. It was probably built by Brahmin Yajjavaraha, who built Prasat Banteay Srei. Because Prasat Muang Tam was built at the same time as Prasat Banteay Srei and has a similar castle plan and building group layout.
🏯It consists of the main buildings, which are 5 brick prangs, built on the same base, made of laterite, surrounded by a double wall. The inner wall is made of sandstone, a narrow, long, continuous square room called the covered gallery. The outer wall is a laterite wall. Both walls have sandstone archways in a vertical line on all 4 sides.
🐍There is a "Baray" (pond) built around the castle on all 4 sides, like the ocean surrounding Mount Sumeru. At the corners of the pond, there are 5-headed nagas raising their necks and spreading their hoods. The tops of the nagas' heads are smooth, without any rays or decorations, so it is called “Bald-headed Naga”, a distinctive feature of Bapuan Khmer art

Prasat Muang Tam is not far from Phanom Rung Stone Castle, but it is just as worth marking as the other one. This is another Hindu religious site built to honor Lord Shiva. It was built in the Bapuan Khmer style. It is a smaller castle than Phanom Rung Castle, but it is easier to walk around because it is on flat ground. Although it is less complete and magnificent, it is still a castle that is quite enjoyable to walk around. The highlight is the bald-headed naga around the pond in front of the castle, which is said to be an art form that is not easy to find. We think that many angles are beautiful for taking pictures.
