Traveling Together Season 16 - Gansu-Qinghai-Ningxia Road Trip (26) Internet-famous Road - Jiuhong Grassland Scenic Road Aba, Sichuan September 20, 2023 Overcast with rain turning to cloudy, 7–16°C, maximum altitude of 3,700 m. Last night, we stayed in Aba County, Aba Prefecture, a small city in northern Sichuan that seems to have been upgraded from a township, with a strong Tibetan style. There are no traffic lights or police at intersections, and traffic is controlled by a city-wide speed limit of 40 km/h and cameras at intersections, but it is orderly. Today, we are heading from Aba County to Songpan County. Travelers familiar with this area will know our destination for tomorrow. The journey is over 320 km, all on national and provincial highways, with smooth roads and many curves. Of this, 220 km is on the "Jiuhong Grassland Scenic Road" (Jiuhuang Airport - Hongyuan Airport), crossing the southern end of the Ruoergai Grassland. The scenic road mainly passes through Hongyuan County, which was part of the Red Army's Long March route (Figure 1). The local government is considerate and has set up many viewing platforms along the way, with standard parking lots and restrooms, making it convenient for tourists to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and rest. This is a road through highland mountains and pastures at an altitude of over 3,000 m. There are open views on both sides of the road, vast grasslands, herds of yaks (Figure 2), grassland wetlands, and winding rivers stretching into the distance (Figures 3–4). When we arrived at Moon Bay Scenic Area (4A), it started to rain. We had lunch nearby, observed the weather, and acted accordingly. After learning about the scenic area online, we decided not to enter. As soon as the rain stopped, we took off at a suitable location nearby and took photos of the scenic area's iconic view - the viewing tower and wetland river (Figure 5). Waqie Pagoda Forest, meaning "big tent" in Tibetan, is a place to commemorate the 10th Panchen Lama's chanting and blessing (Figures 6–7). The pagoda forest is surrounded by a vast area of prayer flags, which is rare in Tibetan areas and very spectacular (Figure 8). To our surprise, on the other side of the pagoda forest, a large area of red-tiled, white-walled farmhouses is evenly distributed among the fields, resembling the water towns of Jiangnan (Figure 9). In the evening, we arrived at Chuanzhusi Town, Songpan County, and checked in. Tomorrow, we will go to Huanglong, weather permitting.

Day 2: Hongyuan County - Zoige Prairie - First Bend of the Yellow River - Flower Sea - Zoige County 🌳 📍 Zoige Prairie: The largest prairie in Sichuan Province. The terrain is flat, and in summer, the prairie is covered with green grass and colorful flowers. Cattle and sheep graze in herds, and you can hear the melodious pastoral songs. You can also see marmots and various birds in the Flower Sea. It is a great place to take photos. 📍 First Bend of the Yellow River: Located in the southwest of Zoige County, it is the boundary river between Sichuan and Gansu. Here, you can enjoy the winding Yellow River and the beautiful scenery on both sides of the river. 📍 Flower Lake: Located in the northwest of Zoige County, it is a treasure on the Zoige Prairie. The lake is wide, and the water is clear. In summer, wildflowers bloom on the lakeside, which is very beautiful. Day 3: Zoige County - Chuanzhusi - Songpan Ancient Town - Chengdu 🍁 Go to Chuanzhusi to experience the cultural atmosphere of Tibetan Buddhism. If you want to go to Jiuzhai, you can go directly to Jiuzhai for a day. 🌸 Food Recommendations: Butter tea, highland barley wine, and yak meat. You must try the yak meat hot pot. It is the black pearl of the prairie. The yak meat is unique to the plateau, and it is delicious. Our Attractions and Activities: We visited Moon Bay, wore Tibetan clothes, went to the Hongyuan viewing platform, visited the Ruoergai Grassland (a vast expanse), saw marmots (didn't feed them), rode horses (it's cheaper to ride near the road by the First Bend of the Yellow River, and the grassland is flat, 10 yuan for two laps, 60 yuan for an hour; it's very expensive on the Hongyuan section, 15-30 yuan per lap of 400m, prices increase with distance), watched the sunset, saw the sunrise, visited Huahu (110 yuan per person, not worth it), went to the viewing platform of Yuntu Hotel opposite the First Bend of the Yellow River (if you want to see the sunrise and sea of clouds, go to the viewing platform inside the First Bend of the Yellow River, although it's a bit expensive, it's worth it; you can't see the sunrise and sea of clouds from Yuntu Hotel, only the light from the sun, as the sunrise and sea of clouds are blocked by mountains), visited Songpan Ancient Town, went to Chuanzhusi, and passed by Huanglong Yaocih. Warm Tips: We set off at 7 am on July 31 and returned via Pingwu on August 3. We don't recommend this route for sedans or cars with low chassis, as there are many sections with hollow road surfaces and many pits caused by falling rocks. Sometimes rocks fall from the mountains, and Pingwu has a lot of rain at this time. It's better to take a detour if possible and go after August for your safety!
