Hongcun, acclaimed by 'National Geographic' as the most beautiful ancient village in Southern Anhui, is definitely a marvelous destination!
🌟 If you envy the hustle and bustle of the city, then the tranquility of Huizhou can absolutely heal your soul. Nanhu Lake, like a calm mirror, presents a landscape painting enveloped in morning mist, filled with poetry and the touch of daily life; this is the real Jiangnan in my heart!🏞️🌸
Recommended route: Scenic entrance - Nanhu Lake - Nanhu Academy - Jingde Hall - Yuezhao - Lexu Hall - Jingxiu Hall - Chengzhi Hall - Shuren Hall - Taoyuan Residence - Ancient Red and White Trees
🚗 How to get to Hongcun? Self-driving is an option, especially convenient for tourists from the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai areas. Additionally, after arriving at the high-speed rail Yixian station, you can take a taxi or choose to take a bus.
🌞 What's the best season to visit Hongcun? The typical misty rain of Jiangnan in spring and summer best reflects the beauty of Hongcun, especially during March and April when the rapeseed flowers are in full bloom, adding streaks of color to the ancient town. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow and fall, and there are fewer tourists. After a winter snow, Hongcun, shrouded in rain and mist, offers a completely different atmosphere, with a unique charm.
🎭 What to do in Hongcun? Visit Nanhu Academy to experience the elegance and wisdom of ancient Huizhou culture; find a teahouse in the village to taste the local Huangshan Maofeng tea; stroll through Chengzhi Hall, known as the 'Folk Forbidden City'; watch the famous local live stage drama 'Hongcun A'jue'; taste a variety of Huizhou cuisine in Hongcun.
📸 How to take photos in Hongcun? Nanhu Lake is the classic spot for capturing the panoramic view of Hongcun, with rain and fog creating the impression of being in a Jiangnan landscape painting; the small bridge on Nanhu Lake, where Li Mubai led his horse in the movie 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', is popular with sketch artists; Yuezhao is famous for its crescent-shaped lake surface, known as the 'Sky Mirror' in the ancient village.
🍽️ What's good to eat in Hongcun? You must try the local specialty, stinky mandarin fish, which smells bad but tastes delicious; taste the famous local stinky tofu; try Huangshan baked cakes, dried vegetable and cured meat baked cakes, osmanthus rice wine, and other Huizhou delicacies.
🏡 Accommodation recommendations in Hongcun: Homestays outside the scenic area are close and more convenient, with relatively cheaper prices; staying in a homestay inside the scenic area allows you to experience living in a hundred-year-old Huizhou building, and Hongcun in the morning mist appears even more like a fairyland.
🌳 What other attractions are near Hongcun? Chengkan, Bishan Bookstore, Tunxi Old Street, Xidi, and Tachuan are all worth visiting together.

If you haven't experienced the concept of "the end of a life, no dream to Huizhou", then pick a normal morning, and go to Hongcun to understand. Because I lived in Hongcun for one night, I walked in the empty Hongcun before the tour group arrived in the morning. At this time, the Nanhu Lake and the Moon Marsh were particularly beautiful. The early mornings were full of layers and the ancient village was full of charm.

Hongcun, an ancient journey in an ink painting.
Today, I visited Hongcun in Anhui, and it felt like stepping into an ink painting.
⭐Hui-style architecture and clear streams, every corner exudes simplicity and elegance.
❤The beautiful scenery of Nanhu Lake is even more captivating. Sitting quietly by the lake, my mind was greatly relaxed.
✅This trip made me deeply appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese culture and the beauty of natural scenery.

The freehand brushwork of Chinese paintings is hidden in the mountains and rivers of Hongcun.
My impression of Hongcun has always been that it is a heavily commercialized ancient town, but only after seeing it with my own eyes did I understand why it is called the village in Chinese paintings.
If spring and summer in Jiangnan belong to Suzhou and Hangzhou, then autumn and winter in Jiangnan belong to Hongcun.
The distant mountains are like ink, and the nearby waters are like smoke.
It is a Chinese painting in ink and color, and a village in the world of mortals.
With such a scene, who can say that Anhui is not Jiangnan?
🗺Attractions:
Nanhu Lake — Nanhu Academy — Moon Pond — Chengzhi Hall — Shuren Hall — Taoyuanju — Ancient Tree at the Village Entrance

Previously, if you took the high-speed train to "Yixian East Station" and got off, you could enter Hongcun for free. Hongcun is also free every Wednesday.
🚄How to get there:
If you depart from Huangshan High-speed Railway Station (Huangshan North Station), you can find a shuttle bus to Hongcun at the tourist transportation hub next to the high-speed railway station. The operating hours are 9:35–18:00, with one bus every hour. The fare is CNY 30, and the journey takes 50 minutes.
If you depart from the airport, you can take Bus 19 first, then get off at the passenger station. The fare is CNY 2. Then take a shuttle bus to Hongcun at the passenger station, and you will arrive in about 70 minutes.
1. Nanhu Lake
It is the lake you can see when you enter Hongcun, and it is the meeting lake. The painting bridge across the lake is where Li Mubai led his horse in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." The most graceful painting in Jiangnan is displayed here.
2. Moon Pond
The most beautiful parts of Hongcun are Moon Pond and Nanhu Lake. The whole shape of Hongcun is like a cow, and Moon Pond is the cow's stomach, located in the center of the ancient village. The most beautiful time of Moon Pond should be at sunrise and sunset, especially at sunrise when there are fewer people.
3. Old Time Cafe
At the Old Time Cafe next to Moon Pond, buy a cup of coffee and sit by the window on the second floor. Whether it is sunny, rainy, or cloudy, it has a unique charm.
4. Ancient Tree at the Village Entrance
There are two ancient trees that are 500 years old. One is called a Chinese wingnut tree, which is called a red poplar tree locally; the other is called a ginkgo tree, which is called a white fruit tree locally. These two big trees are the "horns" of this cow-shaped village, the "feng shui trees" of Hongcun, and a symbol of good luck.

Hongcun, the most beautiful village in China, is a place you won't want to leave.
🌈 Highlights:
Hongcun is a typical Huizhou-style village. It feels like you're in a traditional Chinese painting. The village is elegant and reserved. It's a great place to relax and watch students sketching. It's really beautiful.
🕐️ Opening hours:
Open all day. Tickets are valid for three days, so you can take photos in the morning and at night.
🏝️ Recommended route: The main photo spots are Nanhu Lake and Moon Pond. You can also visit Chengzhi Hall and other places.
💗 Other tips:
You can stay in the village or nearby. There are many homestays. Tickets are valid for three days, so you can stay anywhere. I went there during the day and at night. There are more people during the day, so I just walked around and took some photos. At night, Moon Pond is the most lively place.
There are many travel photography services! Most of them cost CNY 399, including makeup and a photographer. There are also more expensive services.
The local specialties are fermented tofu, stinky mandarin fish, and Huangshan pancakes. I think they're all good, but the fermented tofu is quite expensive. I bought five pieces for CNY 15, but some places sell six pieces.

Anhui Huangshan Hongcun | White walls and black tiles of Hui-style architecture.
Located at the foot of Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province, Hongcun is a pearl of Jiangnan water town. This ancient village is full of poetry and historical and cultural heritage. Hui-style architecture is ingenious, and most of Hongcun's residences are either three- or four-courtyard houses. The courtyards are deep and winding, with rich spatial levels. The roofs are moderately sloped for drainage, avoiding damage during the rainy season. The water system is scientifically designed to beautify the environment, regulate the microclimate, and achieve a warm winter and cool summer effect.
👉Travel route:
Nanhu - Nanhu Academy - Moon Marsh - Chengze Hall - Shuren Hall - Two ancient trees
If you enter from West Gate 2, you can directly see the two ancient trees. The route can be reversed.
Food recommendations
✔Stinky Mandarin Fish: To be honest, people from outside the region find the meat very tender, possibly because they like snail noodles and don't find it very smelly.
✔Black Rice Cake: Quite fragrant and filling.
✔Unrolled Lemon: Said to be a lemon tea with Maofeng tea as the base. After drinking a plum, it's still quite good. Those who don't like lemon tea may be surprised.
✔Grandma's Hairy Tofu on Zhongjie Street: Much better than Fang Xinyu's, the grandma's sesame sauce is the soul.
✔Chopped Pork with Bamboo Shoots: A very good dish for rice, the bamboo shoots are very fresh.
✔Crab Shell Yellow: One bite is very crispy, the price is not expensive, the old man's shop is more authentic.
✔Kudzu Root Crisp: To be honest, I didn't know what it was at first, but it feels good, a small snack.
✔Osmanthus Wine: Several shops are good, recommended for those who like wine.
👉Transportation: From high-speed rail to Huangshan North Station, then take a bus from Huangshan North Station to Hongcun.

Hongcun in autumn, a picturesque Huizhou.
I finally made it to Hongcun, a place I've always wanted to visit.
When you're in Hongcun, make sure to get up early and head to Nanhu to see the Hui-style buildings reflected in the water amidst the morning mist. It's a dreamy sight. Then, take a leisurely stroll around Yuezhao and enjoy the tranquility and harmony of the ancient village. At noon, you can try local delicacies at a small shop in the village. Don't miss the stinky mandarin fish and hairy tofu. In the afternoon, visit ancient buildings such as Chengzhitang to learn about the local history and culture. In the evening, find a lakeside café and enjoy the beautiful sunset.
Hongcun at night is a different experience. The dim lights make it feel like you've traveled back in time. Time seems to slow down in Hongcun, making it a place you'll never want to leave.

My Hongcun exploration trip
Route overview:
West Gate → Nanhu → Nanhu Academy → Village Entrance Tree → Post Office → Wang Dabiao's Former Residence → Bujian Lemon Tea → Yuezhao → Wang Clan Ancestral Hall → Chengzhitang → Shurentang → Ancient Stage → Taoyuanju → Village Entrance Tree → Exit
Transportation and tickets:
Depart from Huangshan North Station and take the direct bus to the scenic area (CNY 30). The ticket price is CNY 94, valid for three days, and you can enter and exit at will. The first ticket check requires a QR code, and then you can use your ID card or ID card photo.
Attraction details:
Nanhu: Enter from the West Gate and walk a short distance to reach it. Under the shade of the trees by the lake, a group of art students are focusing on depicting the beautiful scenery.
Nanhu Academy: After crossing the bridge, you can see this academy by Nanhu, which is antique and full of academic atmosphere.
Two ancient trees: Walk along Nanhu, pass a former residence, and continue to see two towering trees, one is a poplar tree, and the other is a ginkgo tree, which have witnessed the changes of the times.
Yuezhao: This is an excellent place for taking photos. Many god pictures on the Internet come from here. I came here in the evening and early morning, and captured different beautiful scenery. On the way, I also passed the post office, former residence and Bujian Lemon Tea. There are many shops on both sides of the alley, which is very lively.
Wang Clan Ancestral Hall: Located by Yuezhao, many people take photos here, and I can't help but take a few.
Chengzhitang: I wanted to visit, but I saw that it was dark inside and I was a little scared. In the end, I decided to give up after wandering at the door for a long time.
Shurentang: Follow the signs through the alleys and come to the side of Shurentang Inn. There are corn kernels drying inside, but I also felt scared when I went in, so I left in a hurry.
Taoyuanju: Continue to Taoyuanju, but it was too early to go and the door was not open, so I had to look at the ancient stage next to it.
Lu Village: After going back to rest, I went to Lu Village, which is only 2 kilometers away in the afternoon. It is very quiet here, with few people, streams, crops and mountain views, like an ink painting. I strolled in the village until I was tired and left.
Special record:
On the way to Shurentang, I saw several grandmas washing clothes by the stream. They used the old yellow soap and a stick. The morning sun was shining on them, and I seemed to see a scene in my memory. The grandmas turned their heads and looked at me suspiciously, and I woke up from my memory. I slowly turned around and left, but I couldn't help but look back a few times. After passing through several alleys, I could still hear their crisp and loud laughter...
This trip to Hongcun made me feel the charm and tranquility of the ancient village, and also left many beautiful memories.

Other recommendations: The autumn colors around Lingyin Temple are also beautiful, and the quiet temple and the surrounding mountains and forests in autumn are particularly Zen.
❣️Hongcun Tachuan, Anhui
Best time: Early November
Recommended route: Tachuan Village is located at the foot of Huangshan Mountain. Every autumn, red leaves and golden ginkgo trees reflect each other. You can start from Hongcun, walk along the small road of the ancient village to Tachuan, and the ancient Huizhou-style buildings along the way are integrated with the autumn colors.
Other recommendations: The nearby Xidi Village and Hongcun are ideal places for autumn photography. The ancient villages and autumn pastoral scenery complement each other.

Traveling in Hongcun, Anhui
Coming out of the Hongcun bus station, the pastoral atmosphere of the small town hits you immediately. A main pedestrian street is lined with shops, bustling with people. The houses feature white walls, black tiles, and horse-head walls, full of Huizhou flavor. It had just rained, and the distant mountains appeared misty, shrouded in clouds.
Nearby, there is the hustle and bustle of daily life, while in the distance, there is an ethereal aura. Coming from a concrete jungle, seeing this is inevitably refreshing and exciting.
Having bought the tickets online, we scanned our IDs at the entrance of the scenic area to enter. One ticket is valid for three days.
Upon entering, we quickly saw a lake, locally called Nanhu, where many students were sketching by the lakeside. There is a small stone path in the lake, which arches into a stone bridge in the middle, dividing the lake into two. The delicate bridge stands gracefully in the water, giving the flat lake a focal point.
There are many alleys. Walking in the direction of the water flow leads out, while the opposite direction leads in. There are also many people, with various large and small shops, snack bars, and restaurants, bustling with activity. The numerous homestays each have their own decorations.
No need to turn around or look back to find the scenery; it is right beside you, ready to be captured. I took a lot of photos, and they turned out beautifully.

Practical Travel Guide to Hongcun
《Hongcun, the Ink Painting from the Depths of Time》
Hongcun, located at the foot of Huangshan, is like a dazzling pearl, shining with the brilliance of world cultural heritage. Here, the ancient water system weaves a vivid picture, and the unique "ox" layout is a typical representation of Huizhou residences. It has been rated as a "three-star tourist recommendation" (the highest level) by the Michelin Travel Guide and is also an important filming location for the Oscar-winning movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", carrying countless legends and stories.
The architecture of Hongcun is a perfect blend of history and art. Here, there are cozy residences, exquisite private gardens, culturally rich academies, and solemn ancestral halls and other public facilities. All kinds of buildings pay attention to carvings, with delicate and exquisite wood carvings, brick carvings, and stone carvings, each detail showcasing high artistic value. Nanhu Academy, originally six private schools built at the end of the Ming Dynasty, called "Six Lakeside Academies", was rebuilt in the 19th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty as "Yiwen Family School". Here, it seems you can hear the students' reading aloud from the past. Le Bi Garden is connected to Nanhu Academy, and the dragon cypress tree in the garden is like a guardian of time, witnessing the changes in Hongcun. The Wang Family Ancestral Hall, located next to Moon Pond, has exquisite brick carvings, stone carvings, and wood carvings, exuding the majesty and glory of the ancient family. Moon Pond, also known as Moon Pool, is located in the center of Hongcun, like a bright mirror, reflecting the tranquility and harmony of the ancient village. Chengzhi Hall, the residence of the great salt merchant Wang Dinggui, is the largest building complex in the village, grand and magnificent, showing the wealth and luxury of its former owner. Shuren Hall, also known as the Folk Art Museum, has a rich collection of old workshop machinery, stone tools, Huizhou prints, folk items, Huizhou merchant letters, and Hongcun genealogies from the Ming and Qing dynasties, making people feel like they are traveling through time and experiencing the life of ancient Huizhou. The ancient ginkgo tree, over 500 years old, is like the "treasure" of Hongcun, silently guarding this land. The Lotus Pond is the best place to enjoy the scenery of Nanhu, where the painting bridge, Hongcun, and distant mountains can be seen together, forming a beautiful landscape painting.

Ancient Ink City Huizhou | Huangshan Hongcun, the Most Beautiful Ancient Village in Southern Anhui
You must visit Huangshan Hongcun at least once. This ancient village, rated as the most beautiful in Southern Anhui by National Geographic magazine, is one of the typical representatives of Huizhou architecture.
Taking advantage of the misty rain in Jiangnan, it adds a touch of ink painting to Hongcun.
Hongcun Tour Route: Nanhu Lake - Nanhu Academy - Jingde Hall - Moon Pond - Lexu Hall - Jingxiu Hall - Chengzhi Hall - Deyi Hall - Taoyuan Residence.
Nanhu Lake is located at the entrance of Hongcun. The bridge over the lake was a filming location for the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and is also the best photography spot.
The alleys of Hongcun are winding, and the stone roads wet by the light rain are very photogenic but also a bit slippery. Be sure to pay attention to safety when traveling on rainy days.
Throughout Hongcun, you can see groups of art students from art academies or those learning to paint, which is also a unique scenery.
