If you are heading to Nagoya this has to be on the top of your to do list, the Higashiyama Zoo & Botanical Gardens. I was sceptical at first as the entrance is a little dated and needs some love, but I was honestly blown away by the scale of the zoo and the range of animals. I bought the combo ticket for around ¥1000 to so the zoo and the sky tower, it was well worth the money! The animals are grouped by areas based on where they’re found in the world - Americas, Africa and Asia being the biggest. The stand out animals for me were the elephants, polar bear, Sumatran tiger and the koalas! There is also an amazing reptile and amphibian house and I was honestly fascinated by the range they had here, some creatures I had never even heard of before. The zoo also has a mini amusement park for kids near the sky tower which charges extra per ride or they do group passes and day passes. The exhibits are quite varied in style and some are a little dated, but there is work ongoing. There are signs in Japanese on some of the areas of the animal is no longer there so watch out for that. The maple leaves outside the pavilion are dazzling, and you can sit quietly in the pavilion and enjoy the red maples. It's like a scene from an anime, a beautiful picture! Today, I visited the zoo and botanical gardens, and the entrance fee is quite reasonable at 500 yen per adult. We got off at Hoshigaoka Station, exited through Exit 6, and saw a sign indicating that the gardens were over 700 meters away. We dragged our luggage uphill, which was more exhausting than climbing a mountain. Upon arrival, we found out from the staff that luggage storage is only available at the main entrance and the north gate, and they kindly marked it on the map for us. Entering through the Hoshigaoka gate leads you to the botanical gardens, and the zoo is quite a distance away, separated by a public road. After exiting the botanical gardens, the staff at the entrance will give you a ticket to enter the zoo across the street. Once inside the zoo, it started pouring rain, leaving us speechless. While taking shelter, we tried a gorilla hot dog, which was less appealing than the picture, much like our experience. We eventually exited through the main gate, checked the locker prices, and saved 500 yen. Walking through the rain with luggage was quite the ordeal. After missing the capybara's working hours in Osaka and feeling down for an afternoon, I decided to change my plan and visit Nagoya instead! The Higashiyama Zoo is incredibly cute, filled with parents and their kids braving the 38-degree heat to explore nature. But my mission was clear—I was there for the capybaras! I found this place with an entrance fee of 500 yen per adult. Armed with my Starbucks capybara plush, I navigated the zoo using my limited Japanese: "Sumimasen, capybara-chan?" (with a rising tone). After asking four staff members, I finally found them! Ahhh! Capybara, you little pig, so lazy 😡 I watched for 40 minutes as it turned over three times without much movement. Truly, the world's most emotionally stable 'pig.' While waiting for the capybara to enter the water (which it never did), my emotions also became calm and stable! This year marks my third visit, and each time I discover something new! The zoo is incredibly vast, combining a botanical garden, a zoo, a lake for boating, and amusement facilities. Despite spending the entire day until closing, I never manage to explore the entire animal area, let alone the botanical section. My favorite animal here is the aardvark, although its environment seems a bit pitiful—I wish I could take care of one! The baby elephant, Ulala, has grown so fast and is now two and a half years old. I also saw a kangaroo digging into its pouch, which was adorable. The zoo has an impressive number of frogs, possibly the most I've ever seen in one place, leading me to suspect the director has a fondness for them. The Komodo dragon, advertised as the only one of its kind in the country and a top predator in the food chain, arrived this August. Everyone queued up to see it, but it looked more like a small dog than the fierce creature depicted in the promotional materials. Inside the park, there are many adorable animals, and the snacks are quite tasty. The zoo and botanical garden are huge, and there's a lake where you can go boating. It's definitely worth the ticket price, and you can spend an entire day there without getting bored. The café at Exit 1 of Higashiyama Park Station is also highly recommended. Discount methods include a 100 yen discount with a one-day train pass and 410 yen through the welfare club. There are various discount tickets available, and an annual pass costs 2000 yen. 🌟 Opening Hours: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Animals start returning to their enclosures around 4 PM, so it's best to visit early, especially for families with children). 🌟 Parking: There are many parking lots available for 800 yen per day. However, there are free parking areas like Uedasan and Ryokyo South Parking, which only charge during spring and autumn festivals or large events on weekends and holidays. These are a bit farther away. Another option is roadside parking, though I'm not sure if it's officially allowed, but many cars park this way near the Kamiike Gate area.
