It is about 50 minutes by car from Takayama city, and is a popular spot that many people visit in addition to strolling through the old townscape. In fact, did you know that there is a spot in Takayama city where old houses from the Hida region and Gassho-style villages such as Shirakawa-mura, where Shirakawa-go, now a World Heritage Site, is located, have been relocated and can be seen up close? This is a Hida folk village where there were once farmers who actually lived in the mountains, but now it has become a museum that preserves and reproduces the villagers' past lives. The village is located on a high place surrounded by mountains with cold weather. You can see Takanama City from above. There are about 30 old buildings, some of which are over 200 years old. They are the village chief's house, the assembly hall, the prayer hall, and other buildings that show the way of life from centuries ago. There are also demonstrations of traditional handicrafts (10:00-15:00). Takayama City has incredible appeal for people who like ancient streets. There are hot springs and Hida-no-sato outside, and Takayama Jinya and Miyagawa Morning Market inside. The most important thing is that the legendary Hida beef is produced here. This place has also been selected as one of the 100 famous waters. Such water quality means that its rice and sake are also above a certain level. No matter spring, summer, autumn or winter, it presents different beautiful scenery, but I personally like autumn and winter the most. If you find yourself in Takayama, take an easy 45 mins walk from the town centre to the fairy folk village of Hida no Sato. The village is a beautiful open-air museum that showcases traditional architecture and culture of the Hida region. The village will be especially of interest to those who want to learn about Japanese history and culture. Entrance is 700JPY for an adult ticket which can be bought on the spot. Make sure to leave plenty of time for your visit though: with nearly 30 exhibits, I managed to properly visit just about a half in an hour and a half. There are also various folk games available to play for free along the way. You can also feed the fish in the pond for just 50JPY per bag of fish feed.
