Located a 5-minute walk from the center of Hida Takayama, "Iozan Hida Kokubunji" is a beautiful temple that is full of history and culture! It has a history of over 250 years and was founded by Gyoki Bosatsu in 746 at the request of Emperor Shomu.

Main Hall: The main hall, which was rebuilt before the mid-Muromachi period, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Inside, many Buddhist statues are enshrined, including the Yakushi Nyorai statue, the principal image, as well as the statues of Kannon Bosatsu and Amida Nyorai.
Three-story Pagoda: The only three-story pagoda in the Hida region, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property of the prefecture. It was rebuilt in 1821 by Hida craftsman Mizuma Sagami.
Large Ginkgo Tree: The large ginkgo tree, which is said to be over 1,250 years old, is said to have been planted at the time of the temple's founding. In autumn, it turns golden and is a stunning beauty✨
Foundation stone of the seven-story pagoda: The huge foundation stone of the original seven-story pagoda still remains, giving a sense of its deep history.

Sarubobo: Many "Sarubobo" are hung in the Koshin-do Hall on the temple grounds. "Sarubobo" are folk crafts from Hida Takayama, and are said to bring benefits such as "removal of misfortune," "family harmony and good relationships," and "children and safe childbirth." When you visit, be sure to stroke the "Praying Sarubobo"!
