Groot Vleeshuis or Great Butchers’ Hall in Ghent is an old building built in the 14th century under the design of a famous architect at that time, Gilles De Sutter. It was originally used as a center for meat trading, including Ganda Ham, which is a famous product of this city. Until 1854, the law allowed meat trading to be done by households, causing the Great Butchers’ Hall to lose its importance and closed in 1884. However, it has been maintained and repaired regularly as a historically important building to this day. Today, in addition to becoming one of Ghent’s tourist attractions, it is also used as a center for various famous products of the Flanders region in northern Belgium, including ham, beer, mustard, chocolates, etc., including opening a restaurant where you can order food and drinks. It can be said that you can stop by one place and get both a full stomach and a full shopping.
📌 Location
The shop is on the road Groentenmarkt is near the Leie River, opposite the Tourist Information Center and Gravensteen Castle. There is a bridge to walk to, not far away. It is very convenient. Inside the shop, there are seats inside which is a glass room. In front, there are products for sale. Inside, there are spacious tables. There is a menu for ordering food and drinks placed on the table. Outside, there are tables to sit in the middle of the ham pieces hanging from the ceiling. Although they are hung just for show, not for actual eating, it still has a Great Butchers’ Hall feel, really imagining the Middle Ages.
The menu offers Appetizers, Hot Dishes, Cold Dishes, and desserts. Many of the menus are made from ham and famous products of this region that are also available in the shop. This time, let’s have a light meal to relieve the caffeine deficiency.
➡️ Hot Coffee with Chocolates – It is hot coffee served with 1 piece of Guylian chocolate. The coffee is fragrant and not bitter or sour. It is just as expected.
We bought a small cake to eat with the coffee. It is quite delicious.
Overall, this place is suitable for stopping by to try the famous local food of Flanders. There are both places to eat right away and take away. You can also see the old buildings with historical significance. If you have the chance to visit Ghent, it is worth stopping by.
