Mei Ho Hou
Mei Ho House is located in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. It is part of Hong Kong’s first public housing estate, the “resettlement block” series. It is also the only existing “H-type” resettlement block, built in 1954. In those days, in order to solve the housing problems caused by the rapid population growth and fires in shanty towns after the war, the Hong Kong government implemented a large-scale public housing construction program, and Mei Ho House was one of the classic examples of this program.
Historical background
Mei Ho House was originally used to provide basic residential facilities, offering residents cheap and practical homes. The building is equipped with public corridors, public kitchens and toilets, reflecting the social and economic development of Hong Kong at that time. After years of reconstruction and modernization, many old resettlement buildings have been demolished. Mei Ho House was preserved for its historical value and converted into the "Mei Ho House Youth Hostel" of the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association in 2013. It also has the "Mei Ho House Living Museum" which exhibits the history of Hong Kong's early public housing and community life.
Mei Ho House Living Museum
The Mei Ho House Living Museum aims to preserve and display the history and culture of Hong Kong's public housing. The museum has several exhibition areas, including restored models of old residential units, historical photos, residents' daily necessities and oral history recordings, which reproduce the epitome of life of Hong Kong citizens from the 1950s to the 1970s. Through these exhibits, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the social conditions in Hong Kong at that time and the struggle stories of its citizens.
Mei Ho House Youth Hostel
Today, Mei Ho House is not only a cultural landmark, but also provides accommodation services, attracting local and overseas tourists. The hostel retains some of the original architectural structures and combines them with modern facilities to allow travelers to experience a meaningful historical and cultural journey.
