Heroes' Square is a square in Vienna, the capital of Austria. Many important events took place here, the most famous being Hitler's announcement of the German-Austrian merger here in 1938. Strolling through the square, you can see the statues of the Grand Duke Karl and Prince Eugen standing at both ends, defending against foreign enemies. Heroes' Square is the outer square of the Hofburg Palace, built during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I as part of the so-called "Imperial Square" that was not fully completed. To the northeast is the LeopoldinianTract of the Hofburg Palace, to the southeast is the New Hofburg, and to the southwest is the inner ring road, which separates it from the "Outside the City Gate" (AeusseressBurgtor). There are no buildings in the north-west, with a good view of the inner ring road, the parliament building, the town hall, and the Burgtheater.
