Okazaki is famous for Okazaemon, but Tokugawa Ieyasu is also famous, and there is even a bronze statue of Ieyasu in front of Okazaki Station. In Hamamatsu, I ate the famous gyoza dumplings. They were easy to eat and I finished them in no time. Also, on Bentenjima, a few stations away from Hamamatsu Station, I was able to see the torii gates in Lake Hamana. In the background is the Hamana Ohashi Bridge, which is a road for cars only? Hamamatsu: Japan's Hidden Gem In western Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, lies the extraordinary city of Hamamatsu. Geography and History Hamamatsu is a large-scale city, the largest in Shizuoka Prefecture and the 16th largest in Japan. It forms the core of the Shizuoka-Hamamatsu metropolitan area. Though bustling today, it was once a smaller city. On July 1, 2005, 11 surrounding municipalities merged to create the Hamamatsu we know today. It was also where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his youth, leading Hamamatsu Castle to be nicknamed the "Castle of Success," adding to its rich historical significance. Natural Beauty Lake Hamana Lake Hamana is undoubtedly Hamamatsu's most beautiful feature. As one of Japan's few brackish lakes, its 141-kilometer shoreline and 6,880-hectare surface area resemble a giant sapphire embedded in the earth. There's so much to do at Lake Hamana. Take a cruise to experience the lake's dynamism up close and feed the seagulls. Ride the aerial cable car across the lake for panoramic views, and on clear days, you can even see the Pacific Ocean and Mount Fuji. The hot spring town of Kanzanji by the lake offers stunning scenery, allowing you to enjoy the lake view while soaking in the onsen. Alternatively, cycle along the 70-kilometer cycling path, enjoying the lake breeze and the surrounding scenery, and feel your fatigue melt away. Culture and Arts The City of Music Hamamatsu is known as the "City of Music." The Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, held every three years, is the only piano competition in Asia affiliated with the World Federation of International Music Competitions. The Hamamatsu Musical Instrument Museum, Japan's only public musical instrument museum, houses approximately 850 renowned European instruments from the 19th century. Local elementary, junior high, and high school wind instrument clubs, as well as company bands, perform regularly in front of JR Hamamatsu Station, enriching the city's artistic atmosphere. Hamamatsu Festival The Hamamatsu Festival, held annually from May 3rd to 5th, is Hamamatsu's most vibrant time. The spectacular kite competition and dazzling parade of floats attract attention from all over Japan. Over 160 large kites soar through the sky, accompanied by the resounding sounds of trumpets, creating a breathtaking spectacle. At the Hamamatsu Festival Hall (Kite Museum), you can experience a simulated festival atmosphere, see the large kites used in the competition, and learn about the kite-making process. Local Specialties Unagi Don (Eel Rice Bowl) Hamamatsu is renowned for its eel, and the Unagi Don here is exceptional. The eels are fed silkworm pupae, resulting in delicious, almost odorless meat. Kanto-style Unagi Don involves steaming the eel before grilling, resulting in less fat, while Kansai-style Unagi Don is grilled over charcoal, giving it a crispy texture. Served with a special sauce, the exquisite flavor of the eel bursts forth with every bite, leaving a lasting impression. Hamamatsu Gyoza (Dumplings) Hamamatsu's love for gyoza is extraordinary. In 2011, Hamamatsu households spent the most on gyoza in all of Japan. Hamamatsu gyoza features local cabbage and other vegetables combined with a rich pork filling, creating a refreshing taste. They are pan-fried in a circular arrangement and garnished with bean sprouts in the center, which both cuts through the richness and adds visual appeal. Not far from Binming Lake is the famous old home of Tokugawa Ieyasu - Hamamatsu Castle. "Hambong" was named when Tokugawa Ieyasu moved to this place. In Hamamatsu City Park, this castle is a symbol of the entire park. Although the castle was later restored, the stones of the wall have gone through several hundred. The original authenticity of the year, stepping up the stairs, gently touch the ancient stones that carry the years, as if touching a piece of history. Tian Shouge, the original ancient battlefield in the north, the Yuanzhou Beach in the south, the Hamana Lake in the west, the Tianshou Pavilion on the sunny day, and the Mount Fuji in the east is in front of you, at your fingertips. The Tianshou Pavilion is surrounded by 400 cherry trees. When the breeze blows and sways to each other, it seems to be in the beautiful "Sakura Sea". The stone walls in the city completely preserve the style of the Warring States period and stand at the top of the castle tower.
