【Bunkyo Ward】One of Tokyo's famous hydrangea spots! Hakusan Shrine's Hydrangea Festival
☔️ Tokyo, Bunkyo Ward
Founded in 948, this shrine is one of Tokyo's renowned hydrangea viewing spots!
📍 Hakusan Shrine
The Hydrangea Festival held in June features a local festival atmosphere with small food stalls.
There's a photo spot at the torii gate where people line up, but during my first visit, I didn't know about it and missed the chance to participate in the worship there that day...!
If you're interested, make sure to research in advance!
Next to the shrine, there's a park with plenty of hydrangeas blooming. (The festival's headquarters? was also set up there.)
※ Some playground equipment, like swings, was off-limits.
It's also a great spot to take photos with hydrangeas, so be sure to check it out!
The first photo shows the large staircase where everyone parks their bicycles.

Tokyo's June hydrangea sanctuary: a guide to transportation
#TokyoTrafficStrategy
Every June, Tokyo is painted a dreamy blue and purple by the blooming hydrangeas. This seasonal romance is definitely not to be missed! The following is a detailed transportation guide for the three major hydrangea check-in spots to help you easily reach your dream garden.
🌸 Hakusan Shrine (Bunkyo Ward)
As a favorite flower-viewing spot for Tokyo locals, the torii gates, stone steps and cascading sea of flowers at Hakusan Shrine are like walking into a scene from a Hayao Miyazaki animation.
Transportation: Take the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line to Tokyo Medical University Station, exit from Exit 1 and walk for about 5 minutes to the destination; or take the Toei Oedo Line to Ushigome Kagurazaka Station, transfer to a bus and get off at Hakusan Jinja-mae. It is recommended to go early in the morning on weekdays to avoid the crowds and capture the best light.
🌸 Hasedera Temple (Kamakura)
Kamakura's ancient temples and hydrangea slopes complement each other. After checking in, you can also stroll along the seaside and experience the Enoden electric railway.
Transportation: Take the JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo Station to Kamakura Station, then take the Enoden Railway to Hase Station. It is an 8-minute walk from the station. Alternatively, take the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku Station to Fujisawa Station and transfer to the Enoden Railway.
🌸 Meigetsu-in Temple (North Kamakura)
Mingyueyuan is known as the "Hydrangea Temple" and its blue and purple flower wall are great photos in any shot.
Transportation: Take the Enoden Railway from Kamakura Station to Kita-Kamakura Station, then walk for about 10 minutes. It is recommended to wear light-colored clothing such as white, beige, and blue, which will complement the sea of flowers.

[Tokyo/Hakusan Shrine] A shrine in Bunkyo Ward where hydrangeas bloom in abundance
The shrine was founded in 948 when Hakusan Hime Shrine, the head shrine of Mt. Hakusan, was transferred to Hongo Motomachi, Toshima County, Musashi Province.
The shrine has been moved several times, but remains in its current location.
Hakusan Shrine in Bunkyo Ward is famous for its hydrangeas.
Every June, the Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival is held, and you can see about 3,000 hydrangeas in bloom around the shrine grounds.
Time flies just looking at the different types and colors, and it's well worth seeing!
In particular, Asama Shrine, which is usually closed, is open only during the hydrangea viewing season, so it's a must-see.

Located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, this shrine boasts over 1,000 years of history. Though small in size, it is a paradise for hydrangea lovers, with 3,000 hydrangea plants of various species adorning the shrine grounds and its adjacent garden. Every June, during the rainy season, the hydrangeas here burst into bloom. Delicate pinks, refreshing blues, and pure whites create a vibrant sea of colors, bringing life and beauty to the otherwise gloomy season.
The shrine also hosts an annual Hydrangea Festival, featuring traditional music performances, goldfish scooping, handicraft exhibitions, and stalls selling hydrangea-themed accessories and postcards. Best of all, the shrine is open 24 hours and offers free admission!
