Gwangmyeong Cave
#koreatrip This is a full afternoon activity for family in the summer time. Visiting this cave is not dangerous at all. It does require going up and down the steps so avoid bringing baby strollers. Make sure your kids is ready to exercise while exploring the cave (ie. waterfall, garden, treasure, history, rocks and minerals and many more). On a hot summer day, this cave is a must visit. Wear closed toe shoes for safety reasons.

Gwangmyeong Cave, Gyeonggi-do
#koreatrip This abandoned mine turned into a tourist attraction (trap?), which is more of a theme park than a historic landmark. The last segment of the tour focuses on the interesting history (mining, refugee hideout, salted shrimp pantry...) of this "cave," but only briefly. Most of the mine is littered with LED lights, gold themed statues and decorations, aquariums, and lots and lots of stairs. So if you have trouble moving, I would recommend skipping this one. Bring a sweater because there's a constant flow of cold air, and the moist walls keep the temperature low. Tickets cost us 10000₩ per person, so I guess they forgot to change the price on their website, which says adults are 6000₩ per person. I'm not really sure if it was worth it, because every additional activity costs you more money, and all you do here is go up down and out again. Took us about 30-40 minutes. Also, if you have a foreign card, prepare cash because foreign cards aren't really working here.

The most happening cave in South Korea
Gwangmyeong Cave is definitely NOT your regular cave… it is a cave but it is somewhat also a themed park…
This cave was opened to the public since August 2011 but once upon a time back in 1912, it was called Siheung Mine…. Siheung Mine is known or rather was known to be the largest metal mine in the metropolitan area and produced gold, silver, bronze, zinc and other minerals for 60 years….
When the Korean War happened, the mine became a shelter for residents….
It was also used as a storage place for salted shrimps from Sorae Port from 1978-2010
The land was finally purchased by Gwangmyeong City in 2011 and transformed into a cave theme park, retaining its industrial heritage and cultural values, and opened to the public in 2011
Gwangmyeong Cave happens to be a oretty happening cave too, as it has hosted events from movie screenings, concerts, fashion shows and exhibitions at it’s premises
I love it here as the temperature here in the cave is permanently cool and there are also many in- cave attractions such as the Wormhole Square (light theme experiences in cave), Cave Underground World (underground passage that miners once carried the mined ore), Cave Underground Lake, Golden Road (road of ‘Long Life, Happiness and Peace’), Modern History Museum, Aqua Cave World on fishes - you can even find a live real Piranha in here!!!
There is even a 194m long Wine Cave where 170 types of wine from around South Korea are sold.
And you can have some wine tasting if you are there on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:00 to 16:00

Reliving Memories: Gwangmyeong Cave
Gwangmyeong Cave is an incredible tourist attraction that offers a unique and memorable experience. It is an excellent destination for anyone visiting Korea, particularly those interested in history, culture, and natural wonders.
Gwangmyeong Cave is a man-made cave located in Gwangmyeong city, South Korea. The cave is a unique attraction as it is the first cave in Korea that has been transformed into a tourist spot. The cave was initially developed as a gold mine during the Japanese colonial period in the 1900s, and it was later abandoned until it was transformed into a tourist attraction in 2011.
The cave is enormous, spanning a total of 7.6 kilometers and contains a vast underground network of tunnels and chambers. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery and unique lighting effects that illuminate the cave's natural rock formations.
