"Before there was Guangzhou, there was Guangxiao." Guangxiao Temple, known as "the first ancient temple in Lingnan", was first built in the Western Han Dynasty. According to the "Guangxiao Temple Records", it was originally the residence of Zhao Jiande, the King of Nanyue. During the Three Kingdoms period, Yu Fan was exiled here and the place was known as Yu Garden. After Yu Fan passed away, he donated his house to build a temple, which marked the beginning of temple construction in Guangzhou. In the second year of Chenghua in Ming Dynasty (1466), it was named Guangxiao Temple. In 1961, Guangxiao Temple was selected as one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. There are three ancient towers in Guangxiao Temple, namely the Hair Burying Tower, the East Iron Tower and the West Iron Tower. Among them, the East and West Iron Towers, built during the Five Dynasties period, are the two earliest iron towers in my country with a confirmed construction date. They are precious objects for studying the history of architecture, sculpture, and metallurgy during the Five Dynasties period: 1️⃣Hair Burial Tower (Picture 2-4) Also known as the Sixth Patriarch's Hair Pagoda, it is located in front of the Sixth Patriarch Hall in Guangxiao Temple. It is a pagoda dedicated to the holy hair of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. It was built in the first year of Yifeng during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (676 AD). Another saying goes that it was rebuilt in the Southern Song Dynasty and was repaired many times during the Ming Dynasty. The Hair Burying Pagoda is an octagonal, seven-story brick pagoda imitating a pavilion style, 7.8 meters high. There are Buddhist niches carved on each side. Red corner columns and eaves are hidden on the white walls. The column capitals are supported by square corbels but without broad beams. The plain tiles have a graceful arc, and the top is an octagonal pointed roof, and the top of the pagoda is a precious gourd. 2️⃣West Tower (Figure 5-10) The West Iron Tower is located in the western corner of the rear of the main hall. It was cast in the sixth year of Dabao in the Southern Han Dynasty (963). From the inscriptions on the four sides of the tower, we know that it was cast by Gong Chengshu, a eunuch who monopolized power during the reign of Liu Yan, the last emperor of the Southern Han Dynasty, and his female disciple Deng Sanshisanniang. During the Anti-Japanese War, four floors were crushed due to the collapse of buildings. Now only the lower three floors of the tower, the tower base and the stone foundation remain, with a remaining height of 3.1 meters. There is a large Buddhist niche on each side of the tower, and smaller niches are cast all over the place, with thousands of Buddha reliefs inside, but now only more than 500 of them remain. There are eaves at the four corners of the tower, with flying figures, cranes and phoenixes cast in them. It was cast in the eighth year of Kaibao in the Southern Han Dynasty (967) in the name of Liu Yan, the last emperor of the Southern Han Dynasty. It was originally placed in Kaiyuan Temple. During the Duanping period of the Southern Song Dynasty, it was moved to Guangxiao Temple and a hall was built to protect it. It was rebuilt in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The East Iron Tower has seven floors, a height of 7.69 meters, and a stone-carved Sumeru pedestal at its base. There are more than 900 niches cast on the tower, and each niche is carved with a small Buddha statue with exquisite workmanship. Because it was covered with gold when it was first built, it is known as the "Gilded Thousand Buddha Pagoda". Unfortunately, it is difficult to reproduce it now. The iron lotus base under the tower is beautifully carved with patterns of "walking dragon fire beads" and "ascending dragon and descending dragon flame three treasure beads" on all four sides. Unfortunately, the East Tower is now located in a locked and closed building (Figure 14) and is not open to the public. It can only be briefly glimpsed from a distance through a few windows.

Guangxiu Temple 光孝寺 is one of the oldest temples in Guangzhou. According to the famous historian Min Yan, before Guangzhou, there was Guangxiu Temple. This temple was built in the 2nd century BC (101-200 BC). The temple grounds were originally the palace of the King of Nan Yue, Zhao Jiande, the 5th King of the Nan Yue Kingdom (During the Three Kingdoms Period), and was also the residence of a civil official, Yu Fan, who had served in the state of Wu (Wu) under the rule of Emperor Sun Jian or the Southern Tiger. After Yu Fan died, the family turned the house into a religious building. During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it was called Wuyuan Temple. During the Tang Dynasty, it was called Chao Mingfaxing Temple.
