Gokayama, Toyama Prefecture Gokayama is relatively close to Shirakawa-go, so we visited both. Shirakawa-go is more famous, but Gokayama is also registered as a World Heritage Site together with Shirakawa-go. The palms must be replaced every three or forty years. It takes a lot of manpower to change the thatch, so every time someone has a roof that needs to be renovated, the whole village will work together.
