Hainanese chicken rice is known as Bangkok's No.1
Of course you have to eat Hainanese rice when you go to Thailand... The Hainanese chicken rice at Red Brother Pratunam Chicken Rice is known as the No. 1 in Bangkok, so of course you have to try it!
This shop was opened in 1960 near Pratunam Market. It has a history of more than 80 years and is a popular shop known to many locals. It is called the "red shop" not only because of the big red sign and red door outside the shop, but also because every time when dining, there is always a long queue outside the shop waiting to be seated. Even many foreign travel bloggers have introduced it. In addition, it became a Bib Gournand in the Michelin Food Guide in 2018.
There are currently two outlets of Red Brother Watergate Chicken Rice, not far from each other, less than 10 minutes' walk away. The main store is located next to Pratunam Market (White House Fashion Shopping Center). The decoration inside the store is relatively civilian and there is no air conditioning, but the prices are relatively cheap. For example, an ordinary Hainanese chicken rice is 15 baht cheaper than the branch.
As for the branch, it opened in 2019 and is located next to Big C Supermarket. The place is wider and cleaner than the main store, with a simple decoration style and air conditioning, making it relatively suitable for tourists. This time I enjoyed my holiday brunch at the branch.
As soon as I entered the store, the waiter in pink uniform and his friendly smile made me feel full of energy. After I sat down, the waiter first placed the tableware for me and then served me their signature chicken soup. I slowly read the dishes on the order sheet and then ordered. They don't offer many dishes, mainly Hainanese chicken rice, but Hainanese chicken also comes in two types: boiled chicken and fried chicken. There are also some snacks, stews, vegetables, desserts and special drinks available. The order form is available in Chinese, English and Thai to facilitate tourists of different nationalities. I started with a normal-sized Hainanese chicken rice, which came with light beige chicken and white rice. I thought it would not have any seasoning, but it was so tender and smooth, with a strong chicken flavor, and paired with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce, it was enough to warrant a Michelin recommendation. Other snacks, such as fried tofu and vegetable rolls, are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and very delicious.
If you consider yourself a big eater, or if you are gathering with a few close friends, I suggest you order the large Hainanese chicken and add chicken oil rice or white rice. This is more cost-effective and the portion is more sufficient. Although we dined at a branch this time, the price was still very economical. For two people, dining plus takeaway, it was only HK$160, and there was no service charge. It was really a great value!
