It was a winter trip to Gifu, Japan with my partner. Gifu in winter is a magical escape filled with stunning scenery and cultural treasures 😍 We started our journey in Takayama, a charming city surrounded by the Japanese Alps. The preserved Sanmachi Suji district was a highlight, with its traditional wooden 🪵 buildings, sake breweries, and shops. Walking through the snow-covered streets felt like stepping back in time. The ambiance was perfect for photography, especially with the warm glow of lanterns at dusk. We also visited the Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum showcasing traditional houses covered in snow ❄️ a must-see for winter photography enthusiasts. 📍 Kamiichinomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0846 Hida Folk Village 📍1-590 Kamiokamoto-machi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0055 We also visited Shirakawa-go, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage village. The sight of the gassho-zukuri houses blanketed in snow was absolutely surreal. We explored the village and climbed up to the Shiroyama Viewpoint, which offers the best panoramic view of the entire village. The sunrise and sunset shots from here were spectacular, and the peaceful vibe made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip. As one of Japan's three most famous hot springs, Gero Hot Spring is not only famous for its high-quality spring water, but also for its strong Japanese traditional cultural atmosphere, attracting tourists from all over the world. A group of us came to this hot spring town surrounded by mountains in early summer. Take the limited express train from Nagoya and arrive at Gero Station in about two hours. We stayed at a traditional Japanese inn located on the banks of the Hida River. It is gentle on the skin, making it feel silky smooth, which is why it is often referred to as 'Beauty Bath.' Located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, the nearest station to Gero Onsen is JR Tokai Takayama Main Line's Gero Station. As the gateway to Gero Onsen, all trains, including limited express trains, stop at Gero Station. If traveling from Tokyo, it is convenient to take the Shinkansen or express bus to Nagoya Station. For those who wish to explore the Gero Onsen area without worrying about time, traveling by car is recommended.

At GeroGero Butter Stand, they sell butter sandwiches, food, drinks, and souvenirs made with locally sourced Gero milk. Located in the Gero Onsen town, the cute yellow exterior stands out! I immediately tried the butter soy sauce rice ball that I had been curious about, and the rich butter matched perfectly with the grilled rice ball. It was so delicious that I went back the next day to have it again. You can also enjoy your food while soaking in the milk-colored foot bath with cute calves! Be sure to visit when you go to Gero Onsen.

The area around Yunoshima Bridge is the main street of Gero Onsen. It was already dark when we arrived, so the atmosphere was very nice. This is a Yumeguri Tegata, a pass that allows you to bathe in three baths at participating hot spring inns. Some inns have designated times for day-trippers, so if you go late, the order you go in becomes important lol We ran around while taking into consideration the dinner time of the hot spring where we were staying. There were few customers at the late hour (or rather, we slipped in at a place just before closing time...), and some places were fully booked. Many of the inns had a rustic feel, but as long as the hot spring water is good, it's no problem! During this trip to Japan, I stayed at Ogawaya for 2 nights and 3 days. I paid 660 yen because I was told that I had to pay a separate hot spring tax to use the ryokan's hot springs. After checking in at the lobby, you can take a yukata of your choice. As soon as I entered, I was satisfied with the clean room design, and there was a welcome dessert (a Gero specialty) prepared. On the 3rd floor of the building, I could see Gero specialty products and various gift items, and on the 2nd floor, I ate kaiseki cuisine with friendly guidance from the staff. The kaiseki cuisine was a course meal, and I was able to enjoy a neat and clean Japanese taste. The quality of the breakfast was also good. (I personally liked the curry and bread the most.) There are 3 types of ryokan hot springs, and the times for men and women to use the baths are separate. I wanted to go to the open-air bath, so I mainly used the hot spring in the basement. They placed one face towel at the entrance to the hot spring so that each person could take one, so I didn't bring a separate towel. On the last day of Nagoya, I went to Gero and spent the warmest afternoon. There is an open-air hot spring on the lower Lu River. When you are tired, you can take off your shoes and soak your feet. At the beginning of the whole pool, only two people and my family had a foot bath. Later, a pair of young Japanese couples took a pair of BBs to soak their feet.
