Travel Guide to Gaoyi Ancient Village in Huaihua
Gaoyi Ancient Village is located on the bank of the Wushui River in Huitong County, southwest of Xiangxi, and is named for its terrain that resembles a grand armchair with three sides surrounded by mountains and one side facing the water. It was once a water and land transportation hub and a must-pass through the famous historical Tobacco Road. The village preserves 104 ancient residential buildings from the 13th year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty to the 7th year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, spanning 500 years. The most distinctive feature of these houses is that most of them are two-story wooden structures with mortise and tenon joints, decorated with murals, gable paintings, etc., and the doors and windows are exquisitely carved with various patterns. Every house here is a silent book. The ancient village has a profound cultural heritage, encompassing a wealth of ancient architectural culture, Dong culture, folk culture, witchcraft culture, religious culture, and culture of farming and reading, and is acclaimed by experts as 'the first village in the south of the Yangtze River' and 'a folk museum'.
