"Pelle Cass: Photographs" first solo exhibition in Asia
The first "Hong Kong" work specially created for the exhibition by @Harbour City will be unveiled on March 1
Pelle Cass, a photographic artist from Boston, USA, who is famous for his unique "static time-lapse photography" works, will hold his first solo exhibition in Asia at Gallery by the Harbour from March 1 to 26, 2023. Pelle Cass also created the first "Hong Kong" work specifically for this exhibition. The "Pelle Cass: Photographs" exhibition is curated by the art curatorial team WAY by Way of difference. A total of 15 works will be exhibited, including Pelle Cass's iconic "Crowded Fields" series with different sports themes, and 5 latest works that are exhibited for the first time.
The first "Hong Kong" work was created especially for the exhibition and was shot at popular photography locations in Hong Kong
Pelle Cass created the first "Hong Kong" work specifically for this exhibition. He collaborated remotely with the curatorial team of WAY by Way of difference and spent two days taking more than 23,800 photos at popular photography locations in Hong Kong. He then spent more than two weeks selecting 1,203 photos for post-production. Long before deciding to hold the exhibition, Pelle Cass looked at countless photos of different places in Hong Kong for inspiration. Eventually, this popular photo location that successfully set off a "check-in trend" on "Instagram" caught his eye and became the location for his new work.
Collaborate with magazines and fashion brands to create unique "static time-lapse photography" works
Pelle Cass's works create a sense of confusion between time and space, recording the passage of time with a single static image, defying the temporal order while embracing the chaos of multiple times and spaces, making his works interesting and unique. Pelle Cass took thousands of photos and then combined the selected characters into the final effect. He didn't change anything in the process, not even a pixel. All he did was choose what to keep and what to omit, and everything was left intact in its original location.
Pelle Cass has worked with many fashion magazines and brands, including the famous magazine "New York Magazine", fashion brands such as Burberry, Jacquemus, Valentino and so on. Just this December, New York Magazine invited Pelle Cass to design the cover of its 18th anniversary "Reason to Love New York" issue. The cover brings together 72 of the most representative and influential celebrities in New York, and they can still be clearly identified through Pelle Cass's delicate arrangement. Pelle Cass said this became the most complex project he had ever worked on and also one of his most iconic works. He also collaborated with Antidote magazine and Valentino brand in 2022 to create a work with the theme of "Valentino Pink PP Collection" at Place Vendome in Paris.
About Pelle Cass
Pelle Cass is a photography artist from Massachusetts, USA. His works create a sense of confusion between time and space, recording the passage of time with a single static image, resisting the chronological order while embracing the chaos of multiple time and space. To create these works, Pelle Cass mounted his camera on a tripod, took thousands of photos, and then combined selected figures into the final effect. He didn't change anything in the process, not even a pixel. All he did was choose what to keep and what to omit, and everything was left intact in its original location.
These photos include various sports, street images, dancing, fashion, etc., and are real records of one or two hours. Sometimes these events were deliberately planned, other times he simply recorded things that happened naturally at the moment. These photos show many things happening at the same time and contain more information than traditional still photos. He is like a collage artist or a painter, but the raw materials of his works come from real shooting information. In this new form, he conveys a sense of chaos that is full of playfulness and buried with the mystery of time.
His collection is held in the collections of the Fogg Art Museum, the deCordova Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He has also received scholarships from Yaddo, Artist’s Resource Trust (A.R.T.), and Polaroid Collection. He has published numerous articles in magazines and books, including Beaux Arts, McSweeney’s, GQ, The New York Times, Die Zeit, The Atlantic, and The Economist. He also wrote “Pelle Cass” in Just an Idea, “Photoviz” in Gestalten, “Deleueze and the City” in Edinburgh University Press, “Langford’s Basic Photography” in Focal Press, and “The Beautiful Sparkle: Optical Illusions in Art” in Prestel.
