Summary:
In reality, we found that the schedule was too tight and we rushed to too many places, which was very tiring. We even missed some places, like on 9/4 we planned to go to Fushimi Inari but ended up only visiting Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine due to time constraints. We managed to visit most places, but next time we won't plan such a tight schedule or will add an extra day to avoid rushing. If anyone has a better schedule, please share it with me. Thank you! 😍

Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto was founded in 711 during the Nara period.
The red color symbolizing Inari Shrine is truly impressive. 👍
I am always amazed at how such structures were built in the past. 😂

The Iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto ⛩️🦊🇯🇵
One of the most iconic places you can possibly visit in Japan, Fushimi Inari Taisha definitely lives up to it’s expectation.
⛩️ There are endless rows with thousands of vermilion torii gates, straddling a network of trails into the forest and up Mount Inari. The gates are actually donations from individuals or companies~ you can read their names and the date of the donation inscribed on each gate!
🦊 Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Foxes are thought to be Inari’s messengers and so there are many fox statues found around the temple. You can also find foxes in many of the shops and souvenirs nearby.
🥾 You can hike to the top of the mountain, which takes about 2-3 hours. It’s also possible to walk up however far you wish and then turn around. The best photo opportunities with the most gates are actually closer to the entrance.
📸 It can get very busy, very early so be strategic with your timings if you want to take photos with less crowds!
🚇 To get to Fushimi Inari Shrine, take the metro to JR Inari station. This is only 5 minutes and one stop away from Kyoto station. Entrance is free with no ticket required.

The history of Fushimi Inari Taisha dates back to 711 AD, originally located on Mount Inari (Inariyama) and later moved to its current location in 816 AD. Kyoto Attractions|The Spectacular Thousand Torii Gates—Fushimi Inari Taisha—Memoirs of a Geisha.
Built in 711 AD, it is the head shrine of 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan. The main deity worshipped here is Inari Okami, also known as 'O-Inari-san', who is believed to bless bountiful harvests, prosperous businesses, safe childbirth, and success in exams.
When you think of Fushimi Inari, the 'Thousand Torii Gates' come to mind. Seeing them in person reveals their beauty and grandeur. Have you seen them in a movie before? Yes! It was in the scene where the young protagonist runs through them in 'Memoirs of a Geisha'. A must-visit when in Kyoto.
The shrine grounds are dotted with fox statues, each with unique appearances and expressions. The entire Inari mountain is considered sacred, and the 'Pilgrimage Tour' around various energy spots is very popular, attracting many visitors.
Fushimi Inari Taisha is not far from Kyoto Station. You can take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station or the Keihan Main Line to Fushimi Inari Station. For buses, take the South 5 or Express 105 to Inari Taisha-mae. The most convenient and closest transportation is the JR Nara Line to JR Inari Station, where you can see the main torii gate of Fushimi Inari Taisha right at the exit.
Since the shrine is located on Inari Mountain, the sun can be intense in spring and summer. Wear light clothing and make sure to use sunscreen. It's best to wear sneakers, and since there are no water fountains, bring your own water to stay hydrated. The best time to visit is usually from November to early December, during the autumn foliage season, when many events are also held.

Visiting the Fushimi Inari Shrine
#japantrip
Fushimi Inari Shrine is considered one of the most important shrine in Japan, dedicated to the God of Rice taking the body of a fox as a messenger, an important figure people worship for the sake of good harvest. The culture of worshipping the Inari can be pre-dated to Year 794 in Kyoto. One of the notable feature of the shrine is the Vermillion Torii Gate at the entrance donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in year 1589, leasing to the main hall. At the back of the shrine lies a row of smaller torii called senbon torii which means thousands of torii gates, intersecting 2 roads leading to the summit. They were also featured in "The Memoirs of Geisha" movie where little Chiyo was running along the torii during her rest days.

Fushimi Inari is super efficacious | With strategy guide
Fushimi Inari Taisha's omikuji has a total of thirty-two lots
My family shook it twice, and incredibly got the 1st lot once, and the 32nd lot another time
The 32nd lot was a great blessing, so I might as well bask in the good fortune too👏🏻
【Strategy Guide】
⛩️Inari is the deity of wealth and business, and foxes are seen as his messengers. Walking through the mountains, you can see fox statues everywhere.
The dense vermilion torii gates are one of Kyoto's iconic landscapes.
⌚️Visiting time:
▫️If you're just there for photos and checking in, 1-2h is enough, you can head down after reaching Kumataka Shrine, as the torii gates are less dense beyond that point.
▪️If you have plenty of time and like hiking, it's highly recommended to walk further into the back mountains. There are fewer tourists, and it feels more mysterious, a full half-day is also enough.
🚉Transportation:
Fushimi Inari is very close to Kyoto city center, about 15-20 minutes by JR, on the Nara Line or Keihan Main Line, get off at Inari Station.
📝Tips:
📌The prices for amulets inside the shrine are uniform. There are more visitors at the entrance, so you can walk further in, past the Senbon Torii, there is another place for drawing lots and buying amulets.
📌Outside the shrine, compare prices at the small stalls selling fridge magnets and other souvenirs. I bought a 3D fridge magnet (picture 8) for 550 yen, but I saw others selling for 650, 750 yen, so the prices can vary quite a bit.
📌The snack stalls outside the shrine are worth trying, overall OK, not a rip-off.

Kyoto | Fushimi Inari Taisha is more than just Torii
⛩️ Fushimi Inari Taisha is a treasure of Kyoto, a mysterious place that combines history, religion, and natural beauty, with a thousand years of accumulation🦊🌟
The most famous feature of Fushimi Inari Taisha is the hundreds and thousands of Torii (bird ducks)! As far as the eye can see, this is the deepest impression Japan has given me.🦊🍁 These vermilion Torii are connected into a mysterious passage leading to the shrine at the top of the mountain. Countless Torii are arranged on the shady path, as if leading to another world, it is a dream background for photography enthusiasts!📸🌳 The light and shadow cast by the sun on the Torii are absolutely beautiful.
In addition to admiring and visiting the Torii, this is also a place of spirituality.
Fushimi Inari Taisha is mainly dedicated to the Inari Okami, with harvest, business prosperity, and protection as the center of faith.🌾 Visitors can worship and draw lots here, praying for good luck and smoothness in the coming year.🦊 It is said that, starting from the Edo period in Japan, people make wishes here. If their wishes come true, they will build a Torii here to thank the gods. Over time, it has formed the current scale.
Along the way, you will see tourists wearing Torii-shaped pendants and fox masks, which are very characteristic souvenirs!
In addition to the shrine itself, the natural scenery around Fushimi Inari Taisha is also breathtaking!🌿🏞️ At the top of the mountain, you can overlook the entire Kyoto city area, the distant mountains and rivers and the nearby bamboo forests, forming a beautiful picture. Especially in autumn, the red of the maple leaves and the vermilion of the Torii complement each other, it should be even more beautiful🍁🍂
If you want to climb the mountain, it's best to get up early, with fewer people, and it takes one to two hours to reach the top. I'm not a mountaineering enthusiast, so I won't join in the fun.
If you are just visiting and touring, you can walk along the road on the right to the intersection and turn back directly from the next road. In this way, you can take a picture of the whole shrine only with your feeling. Under the contrast of many Torii, there is a kind of illusion of time reversal and shuttle through a thousand years.
Recommend a special soldier route in Kyoto: finish Fushimi Inari in the morning, go to Kiyomizu Temple➡️Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka➡️Yasaka Shrine➡️Hanami Lane➡️Kamo River (these itineraries are arranged in one day, and you probably won't be able to get up the next day)

Fushimi Inari Taisha has been called as the shrine closest to the Japanese life. Searching the information online, It is said that there are 30000 Inari shrines across Japan but this 1 that located in Kyoto will be the headquarters among all of it.
All around the year, there are also a lot of sacrifices and activities will be carrying out and if you would like witness it, do remember to check on their official website for the exact date of the celebration.
Tips:
- if you want to take the picture thousands of Toriiii without other people to photo boom you, highly recommend to visit the place in the early morning like 6 am - 7 am.

Hiking with awesome view
Fushimi Inari
68 Fukakusa Yabunouchicho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0882, Japan
One of places to visit when in kyoto. This place require lots of walking and climbing. Definitely good for burning some calories. There were many shrines and alot of cats around the area. The view from above was amazing. I didn't manage to get to the top which upset me. I complete at least half of the climb and it was getting dark. I went around 4pm and the bottom of the area was crowded but as I go along the trail, I spent quite some time alone. Managed to get some nice shots without people. I left my phone charging cable in the hotel and my phone was left with less than 15 percent battery. At that point I had to give up the hike because there was still quite a long way to go. There was people coming down when I reached the mid point and I asked one of the tourist how far more is there to the top. They told me if I can go at a fast pace, it will take 40 mins to the top. I decided not to continue. It was a good experience and quite a challenging climb. Would recommend to do this during days where the weather is cooling.
Things to bring:
A phone with gps.
Extra portable charger and don't forget the cable.
Water,
Mosquito patch,
Shoe

Kyoto | the most iconic spot that you can’t miss with your kimono😍
Fushimi Inari is such an icon of Kyoto recently that everyone must visit when travelling to this charming city and of course it has been one of the major highlights of my trip⛩️
We decided to dress in Kimono to come to this famous spot from a rental nearby and it’s the best decision! All the photos are super beautiful here and you will easily spend hours walking around and taking photos! When you follow the path to head back down, there is also a japanese tea shop where you can chill and enjoy their authentic drinks. I highly recommend it to you guys!
It’s very famous to capture the thousands of shrine gates and people tend to arrive as early as possible to capture without the crowds. But we headed to that spot at 3pm and just by taking photos on the left side instead of the right, you will have photos of only you and the shrine gates at the background just like the first photo!

Follow the Red Gates
One of the most iconic Shinto shrines in Kyoto is the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of torii gates. We were surprised at just how large the area is and how long the trails are - we spent over two hours hiking up and down the hills, following the bright red gates and passing by many small shrines. We arrived late in the afternoon and were lucky to catch the sun setting over Kyoto at a lookout point on the hill.

During our hike at Fushimi Inari Taisha, we had the opportunity to visit Nishimura-tei, the udon shop located at one of the rest area in Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, and we must say it was a delightful experience. The shop is conveniently situated near the entrance of the shrine, making it a great spot to refuel after exploring the beautiful surroundings. We were lucky to be seated in the tatami room near the window, overlooking the scenic view of Senbon Torii or the 1000 Torii gate.
We had kake udon, amazake, and of course inari sushi, since we're at Fushimi Inari Shrine. Tired and famished from the hike since morning, we gobbled up our food right away. All were delicious!

a insta famous shrine in Kyoto. one of the must visits :p for their beautiful orange torri gates
quite a lot of people when we visited after lunch though, so can’t even take a proper photo.
I feel like I enjoyed my time the most when we came across a small cafe on our way back to the entrance, and got to sit outdoor and enjoy the beautiful, zen, relaxing garden view.

Hike through a thousand inscribed gates 😍
Fushimi Inari is famous for its thousands of inscribed red gates leading up to and around Mount Inari. There are multiple shrines along the way with Fushimi Inari being the most important.
The joy of this small hike is in it’s beauty and serenity. I went very early in the morning (its open 24hrs with no entrance fee) and i was one of the only people walking around. It felt very special. I’ve heard it gets much busier as the day goes on though.

Summer kimono experience in Japan 🇯🇵
Wearing "Yukata" (casual summer kimono) is definitely a must-do in Japan! You can find kimono rental shops near famous spots. It will take time to pick out your favorite kimono, so you go there early. It also takes about 30 minutes to get dressed up and get your hair done. Don't worry, a kimono specialist will help you.
This place is the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. It is famous for its thousand vermillon gates. We were wearing "geta" (wooden footwear) so it was impossible for us to finish the hike!
Don't miss this place when you visit! Enjoy!

Japan reopening on 11th October!
I moved to Japan in April 2022, but for most visitors the country has been shut to tourists for around two years now. They trialed allowing in foreign tourists with tour groups over the summer, but it wasn't particularly popular and not affordable for young backpackers.
However, time for some good news! From October 11th tourists with three vaccinations or a negative PCR test will be allowed to visit Japan independently once more!
To celebrate, here are some photos from one of my bucket list sights - the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto. This is definitely a must-see for your trip to Japan! I loved climbing the mountain through the incredible torii gates. There are also a few smaller temples and shrines nearby, as well as many great cafes and shops, so you can easily make a full day out of exploring this area 😊
Fun facts:
- The Fushimi Inari shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of rice, Inari. You will also see many fox statues around, as these are Inari's messangers.
- The oldest structures of the shrine were built in 711, but most of what you see today was built in 1499 or later. New torii gates are still being added today.
- The torii gates are sponsored by local and national companies. You can see their names written on the back.
Top tips:
- It can be quite a tiring walk, so wear sensible shoes and bring plenty of water.
- Allow around 2-3 hours to walk up and down the mountain, enjoying the torii gates and views.
- Arrive early to avoid the crowds. The shrine is open 24/7 so you can come any time of day or night.

Serene and historic Kyoto
Kyoto is a lovely persevered Japanese city with lovely old wooden buildings, numerous gardens and temples, making it the cultural capital of Japan. Many of these sites are also listed on UNESCO.
Kyoto is very close to Osaka, so a day trip by train is feasible. Spend a few days to truly get a feel of the area. The city makes you feel like you stepped back in time, which is a marked contrast from the ultramodern Japan of the present.
The various temples are absolutely breath taking, even if you are not a believer in the said religion; one place not to miss would be the golden temple of Kinkaku-ji, which is an absolutely beautiful. The gardens are meticulously planned and laid out, making it natural yet ironically man made. The Tori gates at Fushimi Inari-taisha are an icon of Kyoto and a great example of this; you'll feel oddly at zen and relaxed among these seemingly neverending gates. Yet this setting in the bamboo forest gives it a calming effect.
Overall, Kyoto is not to be missed. Wander among its many old streets, beautiful temples and calming gardens. Make sure to also sample the fresh and appetizing dishes the city is known for!
