Four dishes and one soup
5A South Jing Tu Lou Scenic Area is a very historical scenic area, where you can fully understand the culture and life of the Hakka people. They unite to resist foreign enemies, they are hardworking and enduring, and they have built their own magical round houses and live here. The four round houses surrounding a square house are called 'four dishes and one soup' by people.

Fujian Tulou, this article is enough! When you come to Fujian, don't just go to Xiamen and Xiapu, you must come to see the Tulou
The prototype of the place where Chun lives in the film 'Big Fish & Begonia' comes from the Fujian Tulou - Chengqi Lou, the king of buildings.
Many people who come to Tulou for the first time will hesitate whether to go to Nanjing Tulou or Yongding Tulou. Considering the convenience of transportation and the diversity of Tulou types, it is recommended to choose Nanjing Tulou, because you can go to Yunshuiyao for a leisurely walk, see the Big Fish & Begonia version of Tulou, and see the 'Four Dishes and One Soup' often seen in Tulou promotional films.
Fujian Tulou is mostly built by Hakka people, so it is also called Hakka Tulou. Because most of the Hakka people migrated from the Central Plains, they were deeply influenced by the culture of the Central Plains. During the migration process, in order to survive, they had to face various life hardships, so they built houses according to the Bagua. A Tulou is the center of a family's cohesion. The special nature of Hakka Tulou's collective living reflects the strong family ethics of the Hakka people.
Route: Xiamen-Yunshuiyao Ancient Town-Taxia Village (accommodation)-Yuchang Lou-Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster-Zhangzhou or Xiamen
Transportation: Prefer self-driving, public transportation is not very convenient
Precautions: If you want to go upstairs, you need to pay the local villagers 5-20 yuan, depending on the off-peak season and the number of people you travel with, after all, it is indeed their current accommodation.
First stop: Yunshuiyao was built in the Yuan Dynasty, with a 10-kilometer-long ancient road paved with cobblestones. Many TV shows and movies have been filmed here. Walking around Yunshuiyao, you can see many different types of Tulou clusters, including Hegui Lou, Huaiyuan Lou and other Tulous. Hegui Lou is the tallest square building among all Fujian Tulous (many are round). But what is truly amazing is that the entire building is actually built on a 3000 square meter swamp, with only more than 200 pine piles and pads underneath, and Hegui Lou has stood on this huge floating bed for more than 200 years, amazing!
Accommodation: There are many homestays in Taxia Village, you can choose at will, the village is very comfortable, there are many places to eat, you can eat Zhangzhou specialty dishes at will. It's just that sometimes when there are too many cars, the road is narrow and it's not easy to drive.
Second stop: Yuchang Lou, Nanjing Yuchang Lou is a very old and largest round Tulou, built in 1368, at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. I posted a video before, it's very spectacular. The pillars are leaning east and west, with a maximum inclination of 15 degrees, it looks shaky, but it has stood up after countless earthquakes!
Third stop: Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, Tianluokeng is an excellent place to appreciate the local natural environment. Because its appearance is four round buildings surrounding a square building, it is also jokingly called 'Four Dishes and One Soup' by people. The five Tulous are said to represent gold, wood, water, fire, and earth. You can enjoy the view from the viewing platform, or you can go down the mountain from the viewing platform to the inside of the Tulou one by one

Tulou, the heart of Fuijian
Tulou Fujian. Exceptional traditional building and a very special type of communal living. People living their harmonious relationship with their environment and relatives. Built in 18th century and designed with an inward-looking, circular or square floor design. They were built for defense purposes around a central open courtyard with only one entrance and windows to the outside only above the first floor. Amazing history indeed.
Deep within the enchanting landscapes of Fujian, China, lies a hidden gem that beckons the intrepid traveler to embark on an extraordinary expedition. Prepare to be transported to a world where time stands still, where ancient traditions intertwine with breathtaking architecture, and where adventure awaits at every turn. Welcome to the Tulou, a place that defies all expectations and promises a voyage of a lifetime.
As you venture into the heart of Fujian, the anticipation builds, fueling your spirit of adventure. The Tulou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a cluster of earthen buildings that have stood for centuries, each one a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Hakka people who call this place home.

Chinese countryside life
Fujian tulou are traditional circular communal dwellings in China's Fujian province. These UNESCO World Heritage sites offer a glimpse into the unique lifestyle of the Hakka people. Primarily built between the 15th and 20th centuries, tulou served as fortified homes, providing safety and fostering community bonds. They often house multiple families and include features like a central courtyard, living quarters, and storage areas. While tourism has increased, some tulou continue to be inhabited, blending tradition with modern influences.

Not alien spaceships, they are FUJIAN TULOU!
2-3 hours drive out of Xiamen, these Hakka people wonders are a must see when you are in Fujian province. There are many sets/clusters of tulou, we visited Tianloukeng, Xiaban, Taxia, Hekeng and stayed in one in Hongkeng village!! What an amazing experience. You can catch buses or train from Xiamen out towards the tulou but then you need a car to get around them - our inn host arranged a car and driver for us for the entire trip out of Xiamen which was stress free and perfect. Your should definitely spend a night up there as well and try the local cuisine.

Fujian Tulou- UNESCO World Heritage site
The Fujian Tulou is a Unesco World Heritage site. A Tulou is a type of dwelling built in the mountains of southern Fujian. A Tulou is a large round, enclosed structure that is usually circular or rectangular in shape and is used to house multiple families. They are usually between 2 to 5 storeys high and the largest Tulou can hold up to a hundred families. Every family in the Tulou community enjoys perfect equality because every room in a Tulou is the same size and has exactly the same design. You can get to Fujian Tulou by car, train or bus. We hired a driver for the day so it was very convenient to travel between the different Tulous. This is a very unique experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Getting 'round Fujian
Tulou (土楼) are massive round or square earthen buildings constructed by Hakka people throughout south China, particularly in inland Fujian. Built for residential and defensive purposes, they were home to one or more clans comprising several families, with individual apartments facing inwards to a common courtyard. Some are still inhabited nowadays while others are in poor condition, but they're now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area and well worth visiting.
Getting There - The tulou are scattered throughout the countryside, so it's difficult to visit them without a car. We took the train from Xiamen to Nanjing (南靖 — not to be confused with the former capital Nanjing 南京) where we found many drivers. We negotiated a route and price with one driver, who took us first to a guesthouse (not included in the price) and then on an excellent one day tour of several Hakka villages. This was probably the most flexible way to see the area without our own car and the price was reasonable.
Note that it's also necessary to buy a ticket to the tulou area; the funds raised by these passes supposedly go towards preservation of the ancient buildings.
Attractions - As well as the tulou, there are ancient temples and high terraced fields, making this a great place for photography.
Hotels - There are many guesthouses and small hotels in the area, including some inside tulou themselves. We stayed in the hotel recommended by our driver, which was clean and comfortable and run by a very friendly local couple.
Food & Restaurants - Many guesthouses offer food and there are many other restaurants catering for the crowds of tourists who visit this area.
Shopping - Inside the tulou many families have opened small shops selling tea and other local produce, handicrafts and knick-knacks. Many of the tea shops offer a chance to taste several different kinds of Fujianese tea (our driver took us to a couple of places for tasting.)

If you have been to the Tulou, you must know that
The outdoor circle on the first floor of the Tulou Scenic Area is full of various souvenirs and stalls selling snacks
so you can see from this photo. There is really no tourist here. I was very excited to see the Tulou for the first time.

and I feel super magical.

Compared with Xiamen, Ganzhou is not a hot tourist destination. But when it comes to earth buildings, it is familiar. Fujian's classic earth buildings are mainly distributed in Yongding County of Longyan City and Nanjing County of Cangzhou City. The famous earth buildings in Yongding County are concentrated in Hukeng Town and Xiayang Town. The famous earth buildings in Nanjing County are concentrated in Shuyang Town and Meilin Town.
Nanjing County, the ancient name of Lanshui County, brings together the oldest, most beautiful, highest, largest, smallest and most unique earth buildings in the country. The Tulou Scenic Area is distributed in a circular shape with a diameter of 10Km. The most famous ones are Tianluokeng Tulou Group, Dongpu West Lean Yuchang Building, Hekeng Tulou Building, Huaiyuan Building, Hegui Building and Taxia Village. The name of the Tianluokeng Tulou Group originated in the 1960s. The satellite photos taken in the United States mistaken the five earthen buildings in Tianluokeng as China's nuclear reactors, causing the international community to be at a loss. In addition to the role of nuclear reactors and the World Heritage List, today's fame is also known as the "four dishes and one soup."

Fujian Tulou, nestled in southeastern China, is a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its unique architecture and cultural significance. How to have fun in Zhangzhou? Come and you will find out
Zhangzhou, also known as 'Zhang', nicknamed the Seaside Zoulu, the hometown of daffodils, is located at the southern end of the Golden Triangle in southern Fujian, bordering Xiamen City and Quanzhou City to the east, Longyan City to the north, Meizhou City and Chaozhou City of Guangdong Province to the west, and facing Taiwan Province across the sea to the southeast. The city covers a land area of 12,600 square kilometers and a sea area of 18,600 square kilometers. The climate is mild, belonging to the subtropical monsoon humid climate.
The territory of Zhangzhou has been inhabited by ancestors for over ten thousand years. In the 25th year of Emperor Qin Shi Huang (222 BC), it was incorporated into the central territory of Qin, belonging to Minzhong County. In the second year of the Tang Dynasty's Chuigong era (686 AD), General Chen Yuanguang was granted permission to establish Zhangzhou, which began as the state administration of Zhangzhou, and was later renamed Zhangzhou County and Zhangzhou Prefecture, among others. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, it was renamed as the sixth administrative district of Fujian Province, also known as Longxi Special District. In 1969, it was changed to Longxi Region, and in 1985, it was renamed Zhangzhou City. In 1985, it was listed by the State Council as one of the national coastal economic open areas, and it was one of the earliest regions to implement the opening-up policy in China. Zhangzhou is also the hometown of the Chinese women's volleyball team, a central city in the economic zone of the west coast of the Strait, the city of clocks and watches in China, and the city of hot springs in China. Zhangzhou has the Nanjing Tulou, which is listed on the World Heritage List, Dongshan Island, Zhangzhou Coastal Volcanic National Geopark, Yundongyan, and other attractions.

Fujian Tulou (World Heritage)
Fujian Tulou originated in the Song and Yuan dynasties, matured in the late Ming, Qing dynasties and the Republic of China period. The Tulou is based on stone, with raw soil as the main material, layered and rammed, with bamboo and wood as the wall bone traction, and the T-shaped intersection is anchored with wood. Fujian Tulou is either square or round, mainly round, like pearls scattered in the green mountains and rivers of southwestern Fujian.

When the earthen building is combined with the small bridge and flowing water, it's breathtakingly beautiful
There are a few days left before the New Year, I came to the Fujian Nanjing Earthen Building Scenic Area. Perhaps because it's close to the New Year, there are not many tourists, and I can drive freely in the scenic area, stop whenever I want, and focus on enjoying the scenery.

Nanjing Tulou, Yunshuiyao one-day tour of two choices - poetry and the distance
A love but not get, deep affection but regrettable 'Yunshuiyao' let Nanjing's Changjiao renamed Yunshuiyao. A love for love, silent but better than a thousand words 'Big Fish Begonia' let Nanjing's Tulou become a kind of yearning.
Ctrip's Nanjing one-day tour is basically divided into two types:
A: Yunshuiyao Ancient Town Scenic Area + Tulou Light Cultural Park + Tulou King Scenic Area (Longyan Gaobei Tulou Group)
B: Yunshuiyao Ancient Town Scenic Area + Tianluokeng Tulou Group Scenic Area (Four dishes and one soup + East to West) + Taixia Ancient Village.
Among them, Yunshuiyao Scenic Area includes Huaiyuan Building, Hegui Building and Yunshuiyao. The Tulou King Scenic Area includes Chengqi Building, Qiaofu Building, Shize Building and Wuyun Building. Tianluokeng Tulou Group includes four dishes and one soup and Yuchang Building. Taixia Ancient Village includes a road of ancient village small earth building, more than 400 years of family temple and puppet show.
Line A is from south to north and then to the Tulou King Scenic Area, Line B is from north to south and then to Tianluokeng and Taixia Ancient Village.
Huaiyuan Building, is the best preserved and most cultural connotation of the double ring circular earth building in Nanjing, is also the largest volume of the earth building. The two biggest points in Huaiyuan Building are the 'This is the room' in the building, and the gold-engraved couplets on both sides of the main hall 'The moon moves over the flowers, the wind comes to the bamboo' and 'The good plan in the world is reading and farming, the good deed in the world is loyalty to filial piety' fully reflect the Confucian thought of respecting ancestors and emphasizing education. And the left 'well' and right 'copper money' of the two sides of the glass window 'The future is like a brocade' explains the Tao clearly.
Hegui Building, the ugliest but also known as 'the first strange building in the world'. Ugly because the front of the earth building has two obvious cracks, strange because it is built on a swamp, and there are two wells of Yin (clear) and Yang (turbid). In front of the Guanyin Hall is a piece of broken stone paved land, which is a swamp. It is said that if more people jump on it, the whole earth building will shake with it. This is where Qiu's home is in 'Big Fish Begonia'.
Yunshuiyao Ancient Town, this is a place with quiet water, tranquil ancient banyan trees, long ancient plank roads and the good old days in the hearts of tourists. Whether it's the stone embankment connecting the two sides of the river, or the big water wheel silently waiting under the banyan tree, or the old earth house with mottled decay, every place, every point, seems to have you and me in the past...
Chengqi Building, known as 'the king of round buildings', is the core of the Gaobei earth building group. Chengqi Building is east to the square earth building Shize Building and Wuyun Building, and west to the round earth building Qiaofu Building. Chengqi Building also has a story of aunt and sister-in-law praising the building, also known as the city of family. This is where Chun's family holds ceremonies and sacrifices in 'Big Fish Begonia'.
Shize Building is a rectangular earth building, Wuyun Building is an earth building without stone wall foundation, and Qiaofu Building is a new type of earth building combining Chinese and Western styles.
Tulou Light Cultural Park, a museum of earth building culture with exhibits from historical periods.
Tianluokeng Tulou Group, commonly known as four dishes and one soup, consists of a square building, three round buildings and an oval building. With the distant green mountains, the view from above looks like a rich family feast. When you walk to the middle of the mountain, the layers of thick yellow in the distance look like a palace, which the locals jokingly call Nanjing's Potala.
Yuchang Building, known as 'the mother of earth building', is famous for its 'east to west for 700 years'. East to west refers to the clockwise tilt of the pillars of the corridor on the third and fourth floors, and the counterclockwise tilt of the pillars of the corridor on the fifth floor, with the maximum tilt angle reaching 15 degrees. Inside the earth building, there is a kind of glutinous rice wine called earth building cola for sale, which is sweet and refreshing, but you can only walk out of the earth building in a daze.
Taixia Ancient Village, a typical Hakka village, is built in the 'two mountains and water, iron fan closed door' Tai Chi pattern of the ancient village. What's amazing is that in such a typical Hakka village, there are also Zhejiang-Hangzhou water town style stilted buildings, high and low, large buildings with small buildings. The village has a 400-year-old De Yuan Tang and a stone dragon flagpole that marks the Hakka culture's adherence to and inheritance of the Central Plains culture, and the Hakka puppet show performed next to Zhang's family temple adds to the historical depth of the ancient village.
Line A, is a trip to see the earth building to vomit.
Line B, is a trip that combines history, culture and beautiful scenery, and is also my favorite trip.

Exploring ancient towns with Big Fish & Begonia, Fujian Tulou is indeed a representative of Hakka culture!
🏯This is also the filming location of the movie 'Big Fish & Begonia', it's so touching! The coming and going of camellia, the blooming of begonia, is one of the must-visit spots in my life. 😍
The scenic area is located in Nanjing County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, and the transportation is very convenient! Take the high-speed train to Nanjing Station, and then transfer to the No. 6 bus to the Tulou Reception Center. 🚄🚌
There are two routes for touring, first we choose the route of 1 Tower Village~Yuchang Building~Luokeng Tulou Group. First we came to 1 Tower Village, which is a typical Hakka village, located between two mountains, the river meanders into an 'S' shape, and the houses are built along the river. It's really beautiful! 😮
Next we came to Yuchang Building, this earth building is also known as the 'East Leaning West Sloping Building', with the maximum inclination reaching 15°, it is the oldest existing earth building in Fujian. Imagine, the earth building can lean like this, it's really amazing! 🏰
Then we continued to the Tianluokeng Tulou Group, which is also known as 'Four Dishes and One Soup'. Standing on the viewing platform, the view is really excellent, and it is even more beautiful when the lights come on at night! 🌆✨
Next, we switched to the second route, first came to Hegui Building. This earth building is built on a swamp, and it has remained firm and stable after two hundred years, it can be said to be the tallest one among Fujian earth buildings. It's really admirable! 💪
Finally, we came to Huaiyuan Building, the earth building here is the most exquisite and the best preserved double-ring circular earth building. It's really unique! 🏯
Lastly, we can also go to Yunshuiyao Ancient Town, this ancient town is famous for the movie 'Yunshuiyao'. Feeling the atmosphere of the movie here is really interesting! 🎬
In conclusion, the experience of exploring ancient towns with Big Fish & Begonia is really great! The magic and uniqueness of Fujian Tulou will definitely leave a deep impression on you, come and feel it quickly! 👍🎉

Step into the world of oil painting | Fujian Zhangzhou Nanjing Tulou Yunshui Ballad
Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) Scenic Area
📍Detailed address: Fujian Province-Zhangzhou City-Nanjing County-X607
📆【Travel Guide】
📆Travel arrangement: We arrived in the afternoon, did not stay in the scenic area, basically walked around in an afternoon, by the evening, the setting sun has a different mood. There are also many homestays inside, according to the staff, the night view is very good.
🚗Traffic strategy: We drove from Chaoshan, it took two and a half hours to arrive, when we were close to the scenic area, it was all mountain roads, a bit winding but very flat, friends who get carsick need to pay attention.
🌟Travel highlights: After buying tickets at the entrance, you can find a tour guide sister, the sister will take everyone to walk together, while explaining the history, culture and customs of the scenic area. The Tulou can be visited, there is a charge, and there are villagers living on it. The scenery of the entire park is very beautiful, in fact, it is a small village, with both cultural landscapes and natural landscapes, there are many students sketching by the stream, which makes people feel as if they are in an oil painting.
📌Small Tips: There are some slate roads and many cobblestone roads in the scenic area, remember to wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking. You can also bring more water, but there are also many small shops and stalls along the way.

The entire earthen building and the entire village have a humanistic and historical appearance
You should always go to the Fujian Tulou! Look at the prototype of Big Fish Begonia, when the fairy tale looks like reality!

Architectural wonder Tulou in Fujian
#thingstodo
I've always wanted to visit the world-famous Tulou structures in Fujian ever since I first saw them on TV as a child in a documentary.
Mistaken as nuclear reactors by the West during the Cold War era and reminiscent of a stately castle when viewed from afar, these structures are truly unique and one of a kind ❤️ Their design is actually to serve as a fortress of sorts to keep out marauding bandits, and there are still families living in them till this day!
Touring the various Tulou takes a good 3 hours or so, and contrary to popular belief, there are non-circular Tulou as well! Square or rectangular-shaped ones or Tulou with moats can also be seen alongside the classic round structures.
🚗 There are many day tour options that will bring you to one of the two famed Tulou clusters. The Tulou can only be visited with the accompaniment of a local guide, and while you're visiting the Tulou they will invite you into one of the units for a short tea break where they will showcase some of their local souvenirs.
Highly recommend a visit to cross this off your bucket list! 🍻

Fujian Tulou One Day Tour
Recommended reason:
The architecture of the Tulou made me feel the cohesion of the Hakka bloodline. The guide introduced that at the most prosperous time, there were 600+ people living in a Tulou. If you can't imagine how they would live together by numbers, but after you see it and hear about their rational use of interior space, as well as Feng Shui gossip, you will marvel at the wisdom of the working people, I don't have such a smart head.
Cuisine:
The lunch is the common home-cooked dishes in the local Hakka area, which is light and focuses on local characteristics.
Summary:
The walking mode of travel will let me gain more answers to life.
