By the end of the convict system, only 62 convicts remained inside the prison, built to hold 1000 men. Fremantle Prison was handed over to local authorities and, upon the closure of Perth Gaol in 1888, became the State’s primary place of confinement for men, women and children. #australiatrip Tunnel tour is top notch. We had a pretty interesting group, so that made it a bit more fun. They could do with more shade here, It'd be nice if they planted some trees, even just in large planter boxes. The Cafe had a decent range of vegetarian food, which was surprising. They even had better selection than most of the cafes in Fremantle. Good work. I'd highly recommend doing the tunnel tour, and do it now before all the water drys up!

The Fremantle Prison, built in the 1850’s by convicts from England, is the largest prison in Western Australia and the best preserved in the country. It is also a World Heritage site and runs various tours that range from 1-3 hours daily. In the tour, visitors will be able to walk into the cells, visit the chapels, as well as hear the history and fascinating stories from the excellent guides. One of the cells even had sketches on the wall - done by one very artistic convict during his time in the prison.
