Fayuan Temple 7 Fayuansi
Far away from the crowds, rarely visited by tourists, is this peaceful old temple. It's not difficult to get to - about 15 minutes walk through the hutong from the nearest subway station (Caishikou). You experience a Buddhist Temple as it should be, and if you are fortunate, as I was, there may be a service in progress - fifty or more monks walking around the courtyard chanting 'Amitabha'. Under such circumstances, respect must be shown and no photographs taken. This is real. Fayuan Si provides the most authentic experience of a functioning Buddhist temple. It's a good place to sit and meditate or reflect on the craziness of the world outside the walls.

Beijing | Under the bright early summer sun, the ancient Fayuan Temple stands
Under the bright early summer sun, the ancient Fayuan Temple stands. Fayuan Temple was founded during the Tang Dynasty and has a history of a thousand years, making it one of the oldest famous temples in Beijing. The temple complex is not large, but it is very comfortable to stroll around. Here, people can temporarily forget the troubles of the mundane world, listen quietly to the wisdom of Buddhism, and find inner peace and tranquility.
📷 Photo Check-in Strategy:
The temple's architectural style is elegant and solemn, with a 'one-character screen wall' from south to north. Behind the mountain gate is the first courtyard, with the 'Hall of Heavenly Kings' as the main hall in the courtyard, and the 'Bell and Drum Towers' on the east and west sides of the courtyard. Passing the Hall of Heavenly Kings, you enter the second courtyard, with the 'Mahavira Hall' as the main hall. In front of the hall, there are many stone carvings and sutra pillars. Passing the Mahavira Hall, you enter the third courtyard, with the 'Merciful Loyalty Pavilion' as the main hall. The outer walls of the pavilion are inlaid with many stone carvings. Passing the Merciful Loyalty Pavilion, you enter the fourth courtyard, with the 'Vairocana Hall' as the main hall. In front of the hall, there is a huge stone bowl with beautiful lotus flowers in the water. Passing the Vairocana Hall, you enter the fifth courtyard, with the 'Guanyin Hall' as the main hall. There are also historical ritual instruments in the shape of dragons and fish.
🎫 Ticket: Free admission, no reservation required, each person can get three free incense sticks on the right side after entering.

Those planning to visit Fayuan Temple might want to wait a bit longer
It is said to be the oldest temple in Yanjing, established during the Tang Dynasty's Zhenguan era. Last time I went to Tanzhe Temple, they claimed that the oldest was from the Western Jin Dynasty, so I'm not sure how to count...
Fayuan Temple is currently under renovation, especially the Mahavira Hall, where many highlights of the visit cannot be seen. So it might be better to wait a while before visiting, as the Five-Direction Buddhas in the Pilu Hall are very distinctive! Additionally, this place is also the founding site of the Chinese Buddhist Academy, so it must be very meaningful for Buddhist students.

📍Detailed address:
Fayuan Temple, located on the east side of the southern end of Jiaozihu Alley outside Xuanwumen in Beijing, was built in the 19th year of Tang Taizong's Zhenguan era (645 AD). It is the oldest famous temple in Beijing, the site of the Chinese Buddhist Academy and the Chinese Buddhist Library and Cultural Relics Museum. 🚗Transportation tips:
Exit from the D exit of Fayuan Temple subway station. The Beijing Fayuan Temple flower viewing guide shows that to get to Fayuan Temple, one should exit from the D exit of the Caishikou subway station and walk there. The journey is only over 800 meters and won't take much time. On one hand, because it passes through romantic alleys such as Lanhutong, Qijing Hutong, and Xizhuan Hutong, one can fully experience the authentic old Beijing along the way. Beijing city walk | Enjoy a romantic City walk in Lanman Hutong on May Day
Hello everyone, ☺️ if you come to Beijing for a trip on May Day, you must embark on a romantic City walk in the Hutongs!
Recently, with the spring warmth and flowers blooming, Lanman Hutong has become even more beautiful this spring. I went there again last week to experience it, and it has truly turned into a poem of romance!
The Hutongs in spring are full of vitality, with green trees providing shade🌳 and a variety of flowers💐. Cute graffiti adorns the walls. Apart from a few shops at the entrance undergoing renovation, the rest remains much the same as my last visit. If you're lucky, you might even see wisteria. Even without the wisteria blooms, the sight of the flowers and plants is very pleasing!
❣️【City walk Route】👉
South Banjie Hutong➡️Lanman Hutong➡️Qi Jing Hutong (Wisteria)➡️Fayuan Temple➡️Xi Zhuan Hutong
🔸First stop: South Banjie Hutong
📍Shaoxing Guild Hall
Mr. Lu Xun lived here for 7 years and wrote 'Diary of a Madman'. Currently, you cannot enter to visit, but you can take a look at the place where he lived at the entrance.
🔸Second stop: Lanman Hutong
📍Lanman landmark - Don't forget to look down at your feet~
📍Lanman Flower Field - The entrance is decorated with artistic and fresh elements (it was under renovation last week, so you can only take pictures at the entrance).
📍OONAGH - A retro artistic coffee shop, perfect for taking photos at the entrance.
📍Pigeon House - I really like the words on the glass, where you can watch pigeons.
📍Red Salon - There are exhibitions inside to experience the red romance, and there are many nostalgic old items.
📍Wall graffiti - Walking along Lanman Hutong, you will see a lot of graffiti, including The Little Prince, a girl watering plants, riding a bicycle, 'I'm waiting for you in Lanman' landmarks, and so on~
📍Ten Thousand Coffee - The small house-shaped cafe has chairs where you can sit and take photos for check-in.
🔸Third stop: Qi Jing Hutong
To the right of 'The Little Prince graffiti', this Hutong was filled with wisteria flowers in April, and the large swaths of purple are really super romantic💕
🔸Fourth stop: Fayuan Temple
'A Fayuan Temple, half of the history of the capital city'... This place has a history of over 1700 years. The temple is very tranquil, and there is a small garden across the street where many elderly people exercise, play chess, and cards.
🔸Fifth stop: Xi Zhuan Hutong
Don't forget to look at the words under your feet~ There are murals on the walls. Continue to enjoy the walk forward, and at an intersection, you will see Firefly Coffee☕️. I really like the flowers and the little bear at the entrance! It's fresh and suitable for taking photos and checking in📷
🚇Transportation: Subway line 4 or line 7, Caishikou Station Exit D
🚶♂️This place is not far from Niu Street, after strolling around, you can go for some delicious food!

Fayuan Temple, a historic Buddhist sanctuary
It is the oldest existing temple in Beijing, founded in the 19th year of the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty (645). During the Tang Dynasty, it was known as Minzhong Temple, and it was renovated and renamed to its current name during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty. In 1965, the Chinese Buddhist Academy was established within the temple.
Fayuan Temple covers an area of about 6700 square meters, with a grand architectural scale and a rigorous structure. It adopts a central axis symmetrical layout, with structures including the mountain gate, bell and drum towers, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, Minzhong Terrace, Jingye Hall, Wuliang Hall, the Great Compassion Altar, the Sutra Repository, and the Great Pervasive Awakening Hall, arranged from south to north.
Chinese Buddhist Academy
'A single Fayuan Temple, half of China's history.' Since its construction, this millennium-old temple has been closely linked with the great changes of the times. The past history and the inscriptions in the temple will tell you that Fayuan Temple is not just a temple, but also the site of many significant historical events. For over thirteen hundred years, rulers have prayed here for the stability of the country; dethroned monarchs have felt the pain of a nation's fall and family ruin; exiled loyal officials have sought refuge here to express their aspirations; impassioned patriots have clenched their fists in frustration here; and many down-and-out scholars have sought to change their fate here... In the vicissitudes of history, Fayuan Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt, just like the fate of the Chinese nation, enduring calamities and rising from the ashes time and again.

Visit the millennium-old Fayuan Temple before the May Day holiday
It rained yesterday, and today the road is crowded with people
The temple is still quiet, making the trip worthwhile
This year I missed the blooming period of lilacs and crabapples
Fayuan Temple, originally named Minzhong Temple, was built for a hundred thousand loyal martyrs
Inside the temple, the Hua Yan Three Saints and the Thousand-Handed Guanyin are worshipped
There are also many exquisite ritual instruments to photograph
The scale is not large, but it has witnessed many historical moments
Having gone through the 'Wuzong's persecution of Buddhism' and the An Lushan Rebellion
It is still preserved, and many righteous men have been exonerated here
For example, Yuan Chonghuan from the late Ming Dynasty, Kang Youwei and Tan Sitong from the late Qing Dynasty
Inside the Mahavira Hall, there is a plaque written by Emperor Qianlong, 'The True Source of the Dharma Sea'
A million precepts are all 'flowing'; only a sincere heart is the 'source'
At the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, Emperors Qin and Hui were also imprisoned here by the Jurchens
The latter, while being held in Wuguocheng,
Wrote the most desperate seven-character quatrain in history:
'All night the west wind breaks the door, desolate and lonely inn with a dim lamp.
Looking back at the home mountain three thousand miles away, eyes fail to see any geese flying in the southern sky.'
Fayuan Temple, half of Chinese history, is not without its tragic colors

Millennial Fragrance, Lilacs in Full Bloom at Beijing's Fayuan Temple
"The most ancient temple in Yanjing, known for its compassion and loyalty," nestled near Caishikou in Beijing's Xicheng District, there lies a temple immersed in the fragrance of lilacs come spring. The temple grounds are adorned with purple clouds and white snow, offering tranquility and peace of mind, and even the temple cats seem to be leisurely enjoying themselves. This is one of Beijing's oldest temples—Fayuan Temple.
Fayuan Temple was originally built during the Tang Dynasty's Zhenguan era, initially named Minzhong Temple. It was renovated during the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, and Emperor Yongzheng bestowed upon it the name "Fayuan Temple." The temple layout is neat, facing south with a north-south central axis symmetry. From south to north, it sequentially includes a screen wall, the main gate, bell and drum towers, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Avalokitesvara Hall, the Vairocana Hall, the Hall of Great Compassion, and the Sutra Tower.
The lilacs of Fayuan Temple, which make it a top destination for spring flower viewing in Beijing, also have a long history. It is said that as early as the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, there were poetry gatherings themed around lilacs. In modern times, the lilacs of Fayuan Temple have attracted many famous visitors. When the renowned Indian poet Tagore visited Beijing, Xu Zhimo and Lin Huiyin once accompanied him to enjoy the flowers at Fayuan Temple.
Through a millennium of time, amidst the changing seas and fields, as the world and its affairs shift with the years, the white and purple lilacs of Fayuan Temple continue to spread their delicate fragrance, and the Buddhist pagodas nestled in the sea of flowers stand quietly. While strolling through the temple, I found the "five-petaled lilac" (Picture 5).

The Spring of Temples
- Zhihua Temple: Located at the north of Lumicang East Entrance Road in Dongcheng District, Beijing, it is one of the first batch of ancient architectural heritage conservation units in Beijing and a national key cultural relic protection unit. Zhihua Temple was built in the eighth year of the Zhengtong era (1443) by Wang Zhen, a eunuch of the Directorate of Ceremonial during the early Ming Dynasty, modeled after the Tang and Song Dynasties' 'Garana Seven Halls' system. Initially a private temple, it was later named 'Baoying Zhihua Temple'. Its architectural beams, brackets, colored paintings, carvings, and statues are intact, making it a rare architectural relic that has completely preserved the spatial characteristics of the Ming Dynasty.
- Fayuan Temple: Located on the east side of the southern end of Jiaozihu Tong, outside Xuanwumen, Beijing, it was built in the nineteenth year of the Zhenguan era of Emperor Taizong of Tang (645 AD), making it the oldest famous temple in Beijing. Fayuan Temple was known as Minzhong Temple during the Tang Dynasty, and was renovated and renamed to its current name during the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty. In 1956, the China Buddhist Academy was established within the temple, and in 1980, the China Buddhist Library and Museum was built inside the temple. It is a religious museum affiliated with the Buddhist Association of China. Fayuan Temple Zhihua Temple

The flowers at Fayuan Temple have blossomed
The flowers at Fayuan Temple have blossomed... Every year at this time, I make a trip to 'Fayuan Temple' near Niujie because the lilacs here are in full bloom! The temple with its three courtyards is filled with the fragrance of flowers. A gust of wind brings a shower of white petals drifting down, against the blue sky, red walls, and the blooming lilacs and begonias, every casual snapshot here is a masterpiece. Unfortunately, my photography skills are not up to par, so these beautiful scenes can only remain in my memory. However, there is no shortage of photography masters here, enthusiasts with their 'big guns and small cannons' are everywhere. There is a paid parking lot at the entrance of Fayuan Temple, which is not very large, and the roads at both ends are quite narrow, so I would recommend everyone to travel green.

Beijing Fayuan Temple, an event of lilac flowers
Beijing's millennium-old temple - Fayuan Temple, the only remaining lilac flower event among the three major flower events in the capital. In April at Fayuan Temple, it's a world of lilac flowers, with fragrance filling the temple and blossoms covering it. Visiting the temple to appreciate the flowers is a way to experience the past and present, and to reflect on the changes. It is worth seeing.
Fayuan Temple - Lilac Flowers
Learn to recognize the lilac petals of two, three, four, five, six, seven:
Each flower is a world, each petal a cycle of bloom and fade. Flowers bloom differently at dawn and dusk, yet the fragrance remains the same through ancient and modern times. Even if the wind blows and the rain falls, they still make the ground a carpet of red. Returning to dust, they endow new flowers with glory.

Those hidden in the capital for a thousand years ~ Fayuan Temple
Fayuan Temple is located in the south of Jiaozihu Hutong in the old Xuanwu District, hidden deep in the hutong alley.
Fayuan Temple, built in the 19th year of Tang Taizong's Zhenguan era--645 AD, now has a history of more than 1300 years.
During the Tang Dynasty, it was called Minzhong Temple, and it was rebuilt and renamed during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty. Fayuan Temple is also the location of the Chinese Buddhist Academy and the Chinese Buddhist Library and Museum.
🌈A Fayuan Temple, half of Chinese history
Fayuan Temple is not only a historical it has a rich cultural heritage, including the Maitreya Bodhisattva incarnation of the Buddha in the Ming Dynasty in the Hall of Heavenly Kings, and the Ming Dynasty bronze Five Buddhas in the Pilu Hall.
🌈The architectural layout of Fayuan Temple
Adopting a central axis symmetrical layout, from south to north, there are mountain gates, bell and drum towers, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Daxiong Hall, Minzhong Terrace, Jingye Hall, Wuliang Hall, Dabeitan, Scripture Pavilion, Dabianjue Hall, East and West Corridors, etc., a total of seven entrances and six courtyards, the layout is strict, wide and huge, it is the oldest ancient temple building group in Beijing city.
🌟Hall of Heavenly Kings:
The Maitreya Bodhisattva incarnation--Buddha statue of the Buddha in the Hall of Heavenly Kings of Fayuan Temple, made in the Ming Dynasty, is 1.12 meters high, bare-chested and joyful. Behind the Maitreya Bodhisattva is the brave and mighty Dharma protector--the seated statue of Weituo, which is made of bronze in the Ming Dynasty. On both sides of the hall are the four heavenly kings made of bronze in the Ming Dynasty.
🌟Daxiong Hall
In the middle is the "Huayan Three Saints", namely the Buddha, Manjusri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, made in the Ming Dynasty, with wooden fetus and gold lacquer. The Buddha sits on the Xumi seat in the middle, with a halo behind him. Manjusri and Samantabhadra stand on both sides. These three statues are beautifully shaped and exquisitely carved, and they are top-notch among the statues of the Ming Dynasty.
🌟Minzhong Pavilion
Also known as Guanyin Pavilion, the plaque in the Minzhong Pavilion is the royal pen of Kangxi
🌟Pilu Hall (originally Jingye Hall)
The back of the Minzhong Pavilion is the Pilu Hall. In front of the Pilu Hall stands a huge stone bowl, with a double-layer stone seat. The body of the bowl is carved with patterns resembling sea waves, as well as images of mountain dragons, seahorses, and eight treasures. The craftsmanship is skilled and extremely exquisite.
The Buddha statue in the hall is a huge bronze statue of Pilu Buddha from the Ming Dynasty. It touches the roof of the hall and is divided into three layers. The lower layer is a huge seat with a thousand lotus petals, and each lotus petal has a small Buddha statue; the middle layer is the Four Buddhas, facing the four directions of east, west, south, and north; the top layer is the Pilu Buddha statue, solemn and solemn.
There are not many people in the temple, most of them are good men and women, and some devout believers kneel in front of the hall and chant scriptures.
Just walk quietly like this, or sit quietly in a corner, and feel this peaceful and calm with your heart.
I saw several kittens in the yard. One was sunbathing in the pavilion yard, and the other was strolling leisurely, with a look of indifference. At noon, the two kittens, as if they had agreed, entered the Zen hall one after another from different directions.
I have to say, the kittens here are very Buddhist.
You can take three incense sticks at the door to worship the Buddha, or you can donate some incense money at will.

The beauty of Fuyuan Temple in winter is quiet, deep and simple~
This is my first visit to the famous Fuyuan Temple (also known as Minzhong Temple), which turns out to be a peaceful place in the bustling city. The whole temple is not big, only two or three courtyards deep, but it has a kind of isolated, atmospheric and heavy beauty! Especially the few mottled steles in the courtyard, from the Zhengtong and Chongzhen periods of the Ming Dynasty, and the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, etc., are all silently telling the stories about here...

One of the three major events of Gyeonggi, the cloves of the Fayuan Temple in the Liyuan Temple
Fayuan Temple, and the peony of the Chongxiao Temple and the sea otter of the Kek Lok Temple are also known as the three major events of Gyeonggi, attracting generation after generation. The literati and the people competed to watch.
Today, the peony of Chongxiao Temple has moved to Zhongshan Park, and the sea otter of the Kek Lok Temple has also faded out of sight. Only the clove of Fayuan Temple has become famous for its poetic bearing and has become the blood of Beijing culture. .
The most beautiful day in April, the cloves of Fayuan Temple are full, like a piece of white clouds and purple clouds, covering the red walls and blue tiles, carved beams and paintings, the flowers are blooming, the heads are moving, it is simply a "special resort" The beauty of Xiangxuehai is known as "Xiangxuehai".
Fayuan Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Beijing. The temple is very small. If you just wander around, you can finish it carefully in 40 minutes. The things are very good, and the bronze statues of various Buddha statues are very valuable. The facade is very inconspicuous and even a bit run down.
Fayuan Temple is also called Qizhong Temple. Nowadays, the most popular time of the year is the lilac flower season in April. All kinds of long guns and short guns want to record the annual small lucky ones in the ancient temple.
Mengchu.
Fayuan Temple and China's most glorious and tragic historical chapters have always been entangled. As early as the 19th year of the Zhenguan (645), Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was defeated by Gao Li, and he returned to Youzhou (now Beijing). In order to mourn the fallen soldiers, he ordered the construction of the temple here, but it was a good thing to grind until the completion of Wu Zetian, giving the name '"Zhongsi Temple". After witnessing the end of "The Rule of Zhenguan", it also witnessed the fall of the Kaiyuan Prosperity. The initiator of the "Anshi Rebellion" also left a strong stroke here. An Lushan, Shi Siming built a tower here. The monument was once renamed as Shuntian Temple.
Liao Qingning three years (1057) There was a major earthquake in Youzhou, and the Zhongzhong Temple was almost completely destroyed. In the Jin Dynasty, the temple was the famous name of Yanjing, the end of the Northern Song Dynasty. The "Shame of Jingkang", the Jin people made a big attack on Song, in addition to plundering a lot of gold and silver jewels, Song Huizong, Qin Zong smashed to Beijing, and once banned Qin Zong in this humiliation for several months. In the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, Xie Zhes defeat in the Southern Song Dynasty was also held here until the hunger strike. In the late Ming Dynasty, the Chongzhen Emperor listened to other peoples rumors and mistakenly entered the anti-counter, and a generation of famous Yuan Chonghuan died and his subordinates sneaked out. His head was sent to Fayuan Temple for an extra degree. After the failure of Tan Sitong's reform of one of the six gentlemen of the Wuxu, the blood of the city, the coffin was stopped in the Fayuan Temple. The history of the tragic and strong is embarrassing.
