Shenmu Erlang Mountain is located on the bank of Kuye River, one kilometer west of Shenmu City. It is now a national 4A-level tourist Attraction and a provincial key cultural relic protection unit. Because there are two protrusions in the middle of the mountain, which look like the humps of a camel, literati and poets call it "Hump Mountain". In 1518, Emperor Wuzong of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Houzhao, passed by this place during his inspection tour. Seeing that the mountain looked like a pen holder on his desk, he named it Pen Holder Mountain, which is commonly known as Xishan in the local area. The two sides of Erlang Mountain are cliffs. In spring and summer, the mountains are green and lush. In autumn and winter, the mountains are vast. The water of Kuye River meanders at the foot of the mountain, making the mountain more majestic. It is known as the "Little Huashan Mountain in Northern Shaanxi". There are many temples in Erlang Mountain. The Attraction currently has Dizang Cave Grottoes, Eight Immortals Cave, Haoran Pavilion Grottoes, Erlang Temple, Holy Mother Hall, Daozuo Guanyin Hall, Sanjiao Hall, Mountain God Temple and many other temples. Each temple is built according to the mountain terrain and has its own unique architectural style. Erlang Mountain is relatively rare. The Erlang Temple complex was built in the 8th year of the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty (1443), and has a history of nearly 600 years. The temple faces south and is a quadrangle-style building. It consists of the main hall, side rooms, east and west side halls, the main gate, and the bell and drum tower. The main hall has three beams with a front porch and a hard mountain top. The east and west walls are decorated with the traditional fine brushwork painting "Yiyun Yishi Tu" painted in the 15th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1835). There are 14 small "landscapes" of state affairs on the main wall. Outside the main gate is a Ming Dynasty brick-carved screen wall with a shallow relief on the wall core. The front is carved with a "Tiger Roaring Picture" and the back is carved with a "Nine Dragons Playing in the Water Picture". The carvings are exquisite and lifelike. The Holy Mother Hall, built on a natural rock platform, was first built in the Qing Dynasty. The stone archway in front of the hall was built in the first year of the Ming Dynasty (1628). There are stone carved brackets under the eaves, and two dragons playing with a pearl in relief on the eaves. The front is inscribed with "Bixia Palace" and the north is engraved with "Holy Mother Yuanjun". Behind the hall is the Temple of All Gods, a Ming Dynasty building. The Guanyin Hall was first built in the Ming Dynasty and later destroyed in war. It was rebuilt in the 16th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty. The Sanjiao Hall in the mountain was first built in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566) and rebuilt in 1935. It is located in the middle of the Erlang Mountain ridge and is also the largest temple complex on Erlang Mountain. There are Ming Dynasty painted murals on the east and west walls of the hall. The east wall is the "Panorama of East Mountain" and the west wall is the "Panorama of West Mountain". The Shanshen Temple in the mountain was first built in the Ming Dynasty and is also located behind the Erlang Mountain ridge.
