I keep saying this was my favorite day. At Heidu Mountain, I saw mini tornadoes and experienced a small sandstorm—the sand hitting my legs really hurt. But Heidu Mountain is truly like an ink painting, absolutely worth visiting. The road conditions to Heidu Mountain are good too; only the first couple of kilometers are washboard roads, so just drive slowly. Any car can make it—no problem. From Heidu Mountain to the entrance of Mars Highway No. 1 is very close, about 30 minutes, passing through Lenghu Town. Mars Highway No. 1 is basically a no-man's-land. Once you enter, there's almost no signal the entire way. It's best to download an offline map, but even without one, you won't get lost—there's only one fork in the road, leading to Eboliang. The entire stretch is over 90 kilometers of unpaved, rough gravel roads. We stopped to take photos, so the whole trip took about three hours. The middle 30 kilometers are the toughest, with some deep potholes, but the first and last 30 kilometers are fine at 50–60 km/h. It wasn’t as difficult as I imagined—in fact, it was my favorite part of the journey. The vast Yadan landforms were stunning and awe-inspiring. Due to the gravel and potholes, low-clearance cars aren’t ideal; an SUV is recommended, and a 4x4 off-roader is even better. Our Tank 300 was more than enough. Maybe because the scenery was so magical, I didn’t even feel the bumps. If possible, don’t skip Mars Highway No. 1! Driving through the Yadan landforms, so quiet you can hear your own heartbeat, is an unforgettable experience—definitely take the wheel for a stretch yourself! Dongtaijinaier Lake reappeared after disappearing for three years. A woman I met while hiking in Xinjiang told me about it and insisted I visit, so I added it to today’s itinerary. It’s unbelievably pure—a striking shade of blue—and free to enter. I hereby declare it the most beautiful salt lake on the entire Qinghai-Gansu route! (Dongtaijinaier is very close to the Water Yadan, but I heard the latter has lots of mosquitoes, so I just passed by without stopping.) • This day was my bold plan: from Dunhuang to Heidu Mountain, then crossing Mars Highway No. 1, and from there to Dongtaijinaier Lake, spending the night in Dachaidan. The drive took 11 hours, plus stops, totaling about 13 hours. (It was a last-minute idea—we set off at 9 a.m. Luckily, it gets dark late here. If you take this route, consider starting earlier.) • We encountered sandstorms on the way to Dongtaijinaier, with very low visibility. There was also a brief stretch on Mars Highway No. 1, so I’d advise against driving at night. • After exiting Mars Highway No. 1, you’ll enter Highway 315, passing through Xitaijinaier Lake, where the road cuts through the lake with differently colored salt lakes on either side. However, this section has lots of trucks, and the road is badly potholed—drive carefully. • You’ll also pass the U-shaped Highway, but the earlier scenery was so breathtaking that we didn’t stop here for long.

Lenghu Mars Geopark is located in the vast Gobi Desert, surrounded by desolate deserts, bare rocks, or brown Yardang landforms. The camp's buildings are designed like space camps in science fiction, and the accommodations are rows of white space capsules, making you feel like you're on a real Mars expedition. The main part of the Mars Geopark is the Obo Liang Devil City. Because the Obo Liang Devil City is vast and has complex terrain, there are no paved roads. You can only travel between the Yardangs, and there is no cell phone service, making it easy to get lost. Therefore, to enter Obo Liang Devil City, you must rent a satellite navigation device at the base camp. If you deviate from the route, the navigation device will promptly remind you to return to the correct route. Moreover, due to wind and sand, the original dirt roads are often covered with sand and dust, making them slippery and prone to getting stuck. Only four-wheel drive SUVs can enter. Following the guidance of the satellite navigation, we drove into the heart of Obo Liang as explorers. Compared to the Nanbadu Devil City and other Yardang landforms we've seen along the way these past few days, Obo Liang Devil City is vaster and more desolate. The vehicle meandered up and down at the bottom of the Yardangs, and the roads were winding and narrow, as if we were shuttling through a maze. The Yardangs here are grotesque. Some resemble towering ancient castles; some are like pavilions and terraces; some are like an army of whales marching out; some are like roaring lions; and some are like all kinds of strange monsters. Standing on a high place and looking down, the surrounding Yardangs are layered one after another, stretching endlessly. Each one is a work of art carved by time and wind, silently telling the vicissitudes of this land for millions of years. The mournful cool wind swirled among the Yardangs, whistling through the holes and crevices eroded by time, making all kinds of strange sounds, just like what Zhuangzi described in "On Equality of Things": "Only when there is no action, there is action. When there is action, there are thousands of holes roaring. The sound is like rage, like screaming, like scolding, like breathing, like crying, like laughing, like wailing, echoing each other. A gentle breeze makes a gentle harmony, and a strong wind makes a loud harmony." Obo Liang, meaning "Ovoo" in Mongolian, refers to "mounds of earth." Located near Lenghu Town, Mangya City, Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, it is the largest Yardang wind-erosion landform in China. Obo Liang is now a popular attraction on the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Ring Road in the northwest. Since Obo Liang has not been extensively developed for tourism, it is surrounded by uninhabited, barren Gobi desert. Therefore, this magical area maintains a relatively complete primitive state, and stepping into it truly feels like landing on Mars! This is the largest Yardang landform complex in China, with the most peculiar landscapes and shapes, the most typical landforms, and the most representative features.
