Siena’s Beautiful Gothic Cathedral 😍
Incredibly stunning cathedral in Siena. The exterior of the cathedral is beautiful, elegant, and pretty impressive. ❤️
I didn’t have a lot of time in Siena, and did not manage to go inside of the cathedral, which was a pity.
It’s also located not too far from the main piazza.

Sitting on top of a big butte of volcanic tuff, Orvieto retains large signs of its Etrurian past, so much so that the first thing that stood out to me was the light brown tones across its alleys and its roads.
The Duomo cathedral is the main attraction. The church was built in the 14th century and is dedicated to the Ascending of the Virgin Mary. Aesthetically it might remind you of the more famous Cathedral of Siena, obviously because of its roman-gothic style! This one in Orvieto is one of the most significant in Italy.
Don’t miss a visit to another landmark of note, like Torre del Moro for a sunset view of the town and the surrounding hills, Pozzo di San Patrizio and Fortezza Albornoz!
Since we are in Umbria, food plays a unique role. Local cuisine is highly appreciated thanks to its cured meats and other traditional dishes. If you’re planning a road trip across Italy, don’t miss this part of the country for its authenticity.

Siena is not as famous as Florence, but it is located close to Florence. It is one of the old city which in history it used to be Florence’s opponent in terms of development. As we can see, they also have a Duomo (cathedral) which look similar to Florence, but due to some reasons they couldnt finish building it. The city itself is very beautiful and hilly, so be ready to climb up and down #HalloTrip

The Most Breathtaking Medieval Italian Towns 🇮🇹
Italy is home to some of the most breathtaking medieval towns in Europe, where cobblestone streets, ancient stone walls, and historic architecture transport visitors back in time. Here are a few that stand out for their timeless charm:
1. San Gimignano – Known as the “Town of Fine Towers,” San Gimignano in Tuscany is famous for its medieval skyline, dotted with 14 towering stone structures that once represented the wealth and power of noble families. The town’s preserved medieval streets, squares, and churches make it feel like a living history book.
2. Assisi – Located in Umbria, Assisi is renowned for its spiritual significance as the birthplace of St. Francis. The town’s narrow lanes, stone buildings, and peaceful atmosphere are complemented by landmarks like the Basilica of St. Francis, with its frescoes by Giotto.
3. Siena – Another Tuscan gem, Siena is famous for its well-preserved medieval architecture and the Piazza del Campo, where the historic Palio horse race takes place. The city’s Gothic cathedral, Duomo di Siena, and its charming streets make it a must-visit.
4. Cortona – Perched on a hill in Tuscany, Cortona is known for its stunning views and ancient Etruscan heritage. The town’s medieval walls, narrow alleys, and beautiful churches evoke a sense of history and tranquility.
5. Volterra – A lesser-known jewel in Tuscany, Volterra is surrounded by ancient Etruscan walls and boasts a fascinating mix of medieval and Roman architecture, including the impressive Piazza dei Priori and the Roman Theater.
These towns, with their rich history and stunning landscapes, offer an enchanting glimpse into Italy’s medieval past.

Siena, Toscana, Italy 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Siena, located in the heart of Tuscany (Toscana), Italy, is a medieval gem renowned for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture. The city, perched on three hills and surrounded by rolling countryside, offers a glimpse into Italy’s past, with its well-preserved historic center recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
At the heart of Siena lies Piazza del Campo, one of Europe’s most beautiful squares. Shaped like a shell, it is the venue for the famous Palio di Siena, a historic horse race held twice each summer, drawing thousands of spectators. The square is surrounded by remarkable buildings, including the Palazzo Pubblico, home to the city’s civic museum, and the Torre del Mangia, offering panoramic views of the city.
Siena’s narrow, winding streets are lined with medieval buildings, charming cafes, and artisan shops, creating an atmosphere of timeless beauty. The city’s cathedral, Duomo di Siena, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, with intricate marble floors, stunning frescoes, and the remarkable Pietà by Michelangelo.
Beyond its architecture, Siena is also famous for its cuisine, including dishes like pici pasta, cantucci (almond cookies), and the rich chianti wine. With its timeless charm, Siena is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to experience the essence of Tuscany.

Ancient cathedral in Siena
A must-see attraction in Siena is Siena Cathedral, which is also the soul of Siena! At first glance, I was shocked by its exquisite exterior wall relief, which concentrated the essence of the Gothic period. In the bright sun of Tuscany, it was white and sparkling! A fairly large-scale church, if it is built, may be the largest church in the world; but unfortunately, it was closed after a little half of the construction due to the impact of the Black Death and became the current Siena Cathedral!
Inside the cathedral, the most eye-catching and impressive thing for me is the large pillars supporting the cathedral. The snake pattern of light and dark two-color marble, a cold emerald green sense spreads, like the spread of germs, silently!

Statues of Siena Cathedral
The wall statues of Siena Cathedral are exquisite, featuring Roman-Gothic architectural style.
🌟Highlights: Siena Cathedral
⚜⚜At the top of the central gable, there are mosaic inlays and angel sculptures, with the mosaic inlay theme being 'The Coronation of the Virgin'.
⚜⚜The facade is adorned with numerous statues of saints, with half-length statues of saints on the central lintel and the left and right lintels.
🔷🔹On the left and right sides of the central lintel (also on the left side of the right lintel), there are saint sculptures, as well as on the right side of the right lintel.
🔷🔹At the corners of the facade, there are multi-layered saint statues, decorated with protruding horses, lions, etc. Some saint statues are accompanied by gargoyles (water spouts).

Siena, a small town near Florence
Located in the Tuscany region of north-central Italy, Siena is about 50 km away from Florence. The city is known for its medieval architecture, giving visitors a sense of stepping back in time. It takes about an hour to get there, and the most common ways to visit are by taking a bus from Florence or renting a car.
Siena Cathedral is particularly famous, and there are many attractions such as Piazza del Campo. Especially during the season, Piazza del Campo hosts races and offers a lot of interesting sights.

Siena Cathedral requires a significant amount of time to be truly appreciated, at least 4 hours
Siena is not suitable for a day trip, as it's impossible to see everything in such a short time. The cathedral alone offers twice as much to see as the Florence Cathedral I just visited, and twice as much as Venice's St. Mark's Basilica. It has about ten times more to offer than Milan Cathedral. Beneath the main cathedral lies an even older church that dates back an additional 200 years, and next to the old church is a medieval one. Therefore, the vertical depth is equivalent to about 20 stories, allowing for exploration up and down. The cathedral museum is particularly stunning, housing some of Duccio's finest works. While most cathedrals have exteriors that are more impressive than their interiors (Milan Cathedral being the most typical example), Siena Cathedral is an exception, with an interior that surpasses its exterior in beauty. From the floor to the ceiling, there's also an astonishing library, reminiscent of the Vatican's (from which a Pope originated).

Siena Cathedral 🇮🇹

Just had an awe-inspiring day in Siena, and the Cathedral blew me away! 🏰⛪️ The entrance fee of €15 felt like a small price for a ticket to architectural heaven.
The Siena Cathedral, or Duomo di Siena, is a Gothic masterpiece that grabs your attention from the get-go. The facade is a riot of colors, and the intricately detailed sculptures and mosaics set the tone for what awaits inside. Walking through the entrance, I felt like I stepped into a divine realm. 🌈🔮
The interior is nothing short of breathtaking. The black-and-white striped columns, the floor mosaics, and the Piccolomini Library with its stunning frescoes by Pinturicchio – each corner is a visual feast. Climbing to the Panorama del Facciatone gives you a bird's-eye view of Siena that's simply unparalleled. 🎨📸
Don't miss the chance to explore the Baptistery and the Crypt – each space tells a different chapter of the cathedral's rich history. The Baptistery's hexagonal font and the Crypt's intimate atmosphere add layers to the overall experience. ⛲️🕰️
After your cathedral immersion, wander through Siena's historic center. The Piazza del Campo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of the city. The medieval architecture and the buzzing atmosphere make it a perfect spot to people-watch. ☕️🚶♂️
For a sweet treat, try the panforte, a traditional Sienese dessert, in one of the local bakeries. The rich flavors and spices are a delicious homage to the city's culinary heritage. 🍰🇮🇹
Siena Cathedral, you've left me in awe of your beauty and the rich history you hold! #SienaDuomo #ArtisticMarvel #ItalianElegance #TravelBliss

This cathedral is a beautiful treasure in religious architecture. The magnificent church made of various marbles was built in 1215. The construction process spanned more than a century and was built by the efforts of countless Italian artists. .
This Gothic cathedral not only has an amazing exterior, but the interior is equally stunning, with 56 panels inlaid on the ground, from more than 40 artists from the 14th century onwards. Completed in 200 years, depicting history and the picture in the Bible. Inside the church is a famous Piccolomini Library, which enters from a gate in the North Gallery of the Church and you will find yourself in an fascinating library, also the library of Pope Pius II. There is a huge vivid mural on the wall in the collection, depicting the great experience of Piccolomini's life.
Cathedral Opera Museum, which houses the decorative art of the previous cathedral. The more interesting is the bright stained glass window designed by Ducho. After a long, spiral staircase, you can reach the panoramic observatory on the wall at the edge of the cathedral, where you can see a panoramic view of Siena.

Speaking of what Siena impressed me the most is Siena Cathedral, which is also one of the largest churches in Italy. It combines sculpture, oil painting and Roman Gothic architecture, built with black and white marble. A unique stripe shape similar to a zebra. To be honest, when I first saw it, I was really shocked. I have seen so many churches. For the first time, I saw the church with black and white marble as the exterior and interior decoration. It is super nice!
It is said that the church part we are seeing is only a side door of the church that was planned to be built. If it was built according to the plan at the time, the church may become the largest church in the Christian world. But this plan was shelved because of the plague of 1348. The
black and white stripes are the basic elements of the church. Among the treasures of this church are the sculptures of Nikola Pisano, Donatello and Michelangelo.

There are many medieval towns in the Tuscany region, and I prefer Siena.
Siena is located in the southern Tuscany region, about 50 km south of Florence, at the junction of the three hills of the Chianti hill between the Alca and the Arthur River valley. Founded in 29 BC, Siena is a very old town with many medieval sites.
Go to Siena just before Christmas, the locals have a holiday, and there are very few tourists. Going to the old town, it seems to go into the movie.
