Douzhuang Ancient Building Complex is located to the west of Keshan Mountain and surrounded by water on three sides. The overall layout is in the shape of a swastika, with no cross streets inside, only a large T-shaped street and several small T-shaped streets. There are city gates at the junction of the streets and the city walls, with a total of eight city gates, plus the "Wengcheng" built by the Shangshu Mansion, collectively known as the "Nine Gates and Nine Passes", similar to the layout of Beijing, so it is known as "Little Beijing". On both sides of the street are two-story quadrangle courtyards, including the Shangshu Mansion, Dou's Courtyard, Chang's Courtyard, Jia's Courtyard, Flagpole Courtyard, South Gate Courtyard, Pawnshop Courtyard, Shijinshidi, and shops. The buildings in the courtyard are mostly three-story structures with basements. The stairs are located on the side of the door or in a corner of the courtyard, and the direction of the stairs is not in one direction, but changes direction after each floor. The second floor of the courtyard is equipped with a corridor, which is connected to each other, forming a complete defense system.
