Dongshan Carved Building (I) "Tian Xi Chun Gu"
According to "Scenic Spots in Wuzhong", the construction of the Carved Building began in 1922. More than 250 craftsmen worked day and night for three years and spent 3,741 taels of gold. The Diaohua Building was originally a private garden. The beams, girders, columns and eaves of the entire building are decorated with bricks, stones, wood carvings and cast iron. Brick and wood reliefs are very rich, which is just one example among modern buildings in Jiangnan.
1⃣️The Carved Tower is also known as the Spring Tower, which is said to be taken from the poem "Flowers fall, spring remains" by Yu Yue, a poet in the Qing Dynasty. Dongshan Carved House is a mansion built by brothers Jin Xi and Jin Zhizhi who made a fortune in cotton yarn business in Shanghai to honor their mother. It was designed by Chen Guifang, a famous craftsman of Xiangshan Gang. Employs more than 250 craftsmen
It cost 170,000 silver dollars. Construction began in 1922 and took three years to complete. The carved building faces east and covers an area of 2 acres. It is protected by a 20-meter-high black wind and fire wall on the outside and flanked by Hui-style horse-head walls on both sides, making the Dongshan carved building look like a mysterious castle from a distance.
2⃣️As soon as you enter the door, knowledge will come. The ground is paved with colorful stones. A large vase with three halberds inserted in it and a musical instrument, the sheng, next to it, symbolizing "three levels of promotion." Opposite the gate is a L-shaped wall with the words "Hongxi" carved in bricks, which means meeting happiness when going out. The bronze carved handles on the two black doors are called golden carvings, which are composed of chrysanthemum petals, ruyi and six ancient coins, implying that one will have money if he stretches out (pulls) his hand. Next
It is a magnificent brick-carved gatehouse.
3⃣️Chinese people all pay attention to appearance. This gatehouse is like the face of the owner, how can you not pay attention to it? The brick carvings on the front gatehouse are divided into three layers. The four big characters "天锡纯嘏" are in the middle, which symbolizes great blessings from heaven. The stories of the meeting in the ancient city and the clarification of doubts in the ancient city from "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" are carved on the left and right sides, which symbolize loyalty, filial piety, benevolence and righteousness. The upper side is carved with patterns of Ganoderma lucidum, peony, chrysanthemum, orchid, Buddha's hand, auspicious clouds, etc.; the lower side is carved with the four gentlemen of plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum, all of which represent auspiciousness.
4⃣️After entering the gate, look back and continue to look at the brick carvings on the gatehouse, which are more complex and more exciting than the front. Corresponding to "Tian Xi Chun Gu", the four characters "Yu Xiu Jue De" are written in the middle square, which were written by Yin Lixun, a calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty, and mean practicing and accumulating virtue. The stories of Yao and Shun abdicating and King Wen visiting sages are carved on the left and right sides, which symbolize virtue and wisdom; the upper square is the scene of Queen Mother of the West holding the Peach Festival and the Eight Immortals celebrating her birthday, which means "longevity"; the next column is carved with 10 sika deer, which means both "perfect" and "lu"; the lower square is the scene of Tang Dynasty general Guo Ziyi celebrating his birthday and his 7 sons and 8 sons-in-law coming to congratulate him, which means having many children and good fortune, which means "blessing". Together with the double happiness characters above the lintel of the treasure basin in the middle of the ridge, they make up the five characters of "blessing, wealth, longevity, happiness and fortune".
This brick-carved gatehouse alone cost 3,500 silver dollars. It is said that when Jin Xizhi heard the price, he became anxious and said, "This is outrageous!" In fact, everything had just begun.
In order to carve and pile up beauty, huge amounts of silver dollars continued to be spent.
