Diocletian's Palace is a massive ancient Roman complex built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Rather than being a palace for the retired Roman Emperor Diocletian, it is more like a fortified compound, with half serving as Diocletian's residence and temple, and the other half as a typical Roman military camp. Today, Diocletian's Palace occupies half of the old town of Split, Croatia's second-largest city. It is one of the best-preserved and largest Roman palaces still in existence, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Diocletian was born a commoner and later rose through the military ranks to become the Roman Emperor. When he took over the empire, the once-mighty Roman Empire was in decline, plagued by internal strife, power struggles, military factions, barbarian invasions, and famines. After eliminating all rivals and gaining complete control of the Roman Empire, Diocletian deified the emperor's status, moved the capital, and sidelined the Senate to implement autocratic rule. He also initiated extensive reforms in taxation, law, and politics to address the empire's decay. Externally, he waged wars to secure the empire's borders against Persia, Egypt, and Germanic tribes. Most notably, he established the Tetrarchy, a system of rule by four emperors, to manage the vast empire and succession issues. This system worked well during Diocletian's reign due to his prestige and leadership, but it collapsed after his retirement. Nonetheless, his other reforms laid a solid foundation for the later resurgence of the Roman Empire. After reaching the pinnacle of power, Diocletian made the surprising decision to abdicate, becoming one of the few Roman emperors to voluntarily step down. He chose to retire to his hometown of Dalmatia, where he built Diocletian's Palace near his birthplace in Split. It feels like stepping through a time warp back to ancient Rome. 📜 Interesting Story: After Diocletian's abdication, the Roman Empire quickly fell into chaos again. Interestingly, when the empire was in turmoil, someone came to Diocletian's Palace to ask him to return and restore order. However, the retired Diocletian, enjoying his tranquil rural life, famously replied, "If you could show the emperor the cabbages I have grown with my own hands, he would never dare suggest that I replace the peace and happiness I now enjoy with the insatiable greed of power." 📜 Ironic Fact: After Diocletian's death, he was buried in his palace. Ironically, he is infamous for the last and largest persecution of Christians in Roman history. In the 7th century, his mausoleum was converted into the Cathedral of St. Domnius, housing the relics of two martyrs who were persecuted under his rule. 🌟 Tips: You can buy tickets to enter the Cathedral of St. Domnius within Diocletian's Palace and climb the bell tower. When traveling in Croatia, it is recommended to take the bus, as it is more convenient and reaches more destinations.

As it is less crowded compared to Dubrovnik and offers a scope for a more authentic croatian experience. Split can also score more points on the affordability scale (only when compared to Dubrovnik). The rest of croatia continues to be decently priced. As far as sightseeing goes. Just about everything you want to see in Split is within the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's Palace, completed in 305 AD. It's a compact area and you'll easily find your way around the narrow alleys. Make sure you visit St. Domnius Cathedral, it is well over 1,000 years old. You could climb to the top of the bell tower there for a view of the city. But if you care, I did find a better spot.Walk exactly 10 minutes to the left of the palace and then up some stairs and paths in the neighborhood of Marjan. By the time you reach the tiny St. Nicholas Church (1219), you'll be rewarded with an even better view, most importantly without any tourists and it's free! #100waysoftravel #croatia #split

The bus ride took about 4 hours, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the beautiful Croatian landscape as we headed towards the coast. Split is a vibrant city that offers a perfect mix of history, culture, and stunning coastal views. As soon as I arrived, I made my way to Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site that forms the heart of the old town. The palace is incredibly well-preserved, with its ancient walls now home to bustling shops, cafés, and restaurants. Walking through the narrow streets within the palace felt like traveling back in time, with Roman architecture blending seamlessly into the lively atmosphere of modern-day Split. The Riva promenade along the waterfront is another highlight, perfect for a leisurely stroll with views of the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea. Below in what was once the cellers there is now a market. The whole old town is like an open air museum that’s free to enter. Day 15 of road trip. Took a short drive to split from Trogir. Split looks very similar to Trogir but bigger, more traffic and more crowded with big shopping malls and supermarkets. Went to the old town, Diocletian’s Palace and the underground structure of the palace, which charges an entrance fee of 16 Euros for 2 adult n 2 kids. It’s not a large area to explore but after knowing the palace basements were used as the setting for where Daenerys keeps her dragons, I felt worth it 😆. Personally I prefer Trogir, which is a smaller, quieter and more peaceful version.

I stayed in Diocletian’s Palace area,the extraordinary complex of Diocletian's Palace is one of the most imposing ancient Roman structures in existence today, and it's where you’ll spend most of your time while in Split. Don’t expect a palace, though, nor a museum – this is the city's living heart, its labyrinthine streets packed with people, bars, shops and restaurants. There are 220 buildings within the palace boundaries, home to about 3000 people. The narrow streets hide passageways and courtyards – some deserted and eerie, others thumping with music from bars and cafes – while residents hang out their washing overhead, kids kick footballs against the ancient walls, and people sit in their windows watching the action below. There is a morning market in Split, within the market you can find small food stalls and shops as well.Foods are cheaper over the market place. If you have more time,embark on a day trip to Krka National Park from Split. Join a river cruise and admire picturesque waterfalls with free time for swimming and sightseeing in the medieval town of Primošten.

#summerdestinations We were very ecstatic to have visited Split and finally seeing it real life. It is one of our cruise stop and Split from the ship is stunning. I couldn’t get over it as if the images are stuck in my brain forever. Photos don’t do this place justice . What to visit: 1. Game of Thrones Museum- there’s a fee going in so if you are a massive fan of game of thrones then enjoy! 😊 2. Waterfront Promenade / Riva Harbor- this is Split’s main tourist attraction where you can find a lot of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels. We mostly stayed in the area. 3. Diocletian Palace- we were not able to go inside as the queue was very long but it is a Unesco World Heritage built in Roman military camp style. I only took photos of the outside , how I wished we had more time in Split. Split is a place where I would want to travel next. Hopefully next year. We only had a taster of it and certainly a must visit again.

Croatia has 1,800 kilometers of Adriatic coastline, thousands of islands, numerous bays, and many historic seaside towns. Among them are Zadar, Trogir, Dubrovnik and Split. Split is famous for being the palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian. On the third day of our Croatia trip we arrived at the ancient city of Split. The drive from Trogir to Split is 27 kilometers, about 40 minutes, very close. Split is the second largest city in Croatia. When you come to Split, you must visit the Old Town to visit Diocletian’s Palace. Diocletian was an emperor of the Roman Empire and a very powerful emperor at that time. It turned out that he was the commander of the Guards, and he had great power, similar to the Imperial Guards in the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the emperors of the ancient Roman Empire changed every two or three years, which was very chaotic, so later Diocletian became the emperor. , he ruled for more than twenty years. After more than twenty years, he abdicated, came here from Rome, and built a palace in just ten years. But the only thing he did wrong was that he listened to the villain's slander, persecuted Christians a lot, and confiscated many of their properties. It wasn't until two years after his death that the new emperor came and pardoned all the Christians. Christians, and they also made Christianity the state religion, which turned Christianity over, so they demolished Diocletian's tomb out of hatred. The statue was designed and manufactured by Ivan Mestrovic, a famous Croatian sculpture master. In the olden days, this was the first part/atrium of the imperial palace where guests were welcomed and will walk pass before reaching the palace. This is now one of the popular spots where tourists were bought to, and there are even seasonal music 🎶 performances at the Vestibule.
