Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden – Autumn Magic in Melbourne
#cityplaybook
Tucked away in the cool hills of Olinda, the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden transforms into a fiery spectacle during autumn. I had the pleasure of visiting in early May, and the experience was nothing short of enchanting. If you’re looking for a soul-refreshing escape just an hour’s drive from Melbourne, this place is a must-visit – especially during the autumn season.
As soon as I stepped into the garden, I was greeted by a mosaic of vivid reds, warm ambers, and golden yellows. The Japanese maples are the true stars of the show, their delicate leaves fluttering down like confetti. Walking through the forest paths felt like being in a dream – every turn revealed a new burst of color. The crisp air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the faint scent of earth and foliage made the experience deeply grounding.
What mattered most to me during my visit was the stillness and serenity. Despite its popularity, there were pockets of quiet where I could sit, breathe, and take in the beauty without distraction. Whether you're a photographer, a nature lover, or simply someone needing a break from city life, this garden has a calming power that’s hard to put into words.
Best time to visit? Late April to early May is perfect. That’s when the colors are at their peak and the weather is cool enough for a leisurely stroll without being too cold.
Bonus Tip: Entry is free and there’s plenty of parking nearby. For an extra treat, stop by one of the nearby cafes in Olinda or Sassafras for a warm scone and tea after your garden walk.

A small town away from the bustling city of Melbourne——Olinda
There are actually many places worth exploring in Melbourne. For those who can drive, it is highly recommended to explore the suburbs because you will definitely find many beautiful scenery.
In the small town of Olinda, there are many different art exhibitions. The streetscapes, buildings, shops, etc. are completely different from those in the center of Melbourne.
The overall feeling is very leisurely, but the scenery is very worthy of the title of the Art Capital.
