Usually, you can complete the round trip on foot without taking a motorcycle. ‼️ However, if the weather is good and you plan to go to Zhuoyongcuo, people with less stamina are advised to take a motorcycle once between Dangling Village and Hulu Lake. This helps save some energy and time for the high-altitude climb. Hiking to Zhuoyongcuo and back in one day is very demanding, and you also need to consider the next day's hike. 🌌 Return to Dangling Village in the evening for dinner and accommodation. When sleeping at night, it’s best not to keep the electric blanket on all the time to avoid altitude sickness. Also, leave a small gap in the window. I had a headache and poor sleep that night, but after leaving the room for a while the next day, the headache went away, indicating the room was really low on oxygen 😂 Day 3️⃣: Jiayila Lake ➡️ Return trip 🚌 After breakfast, take a 40-minute drive to the hiking start point 🥾 One way 2-3 hours, altitude: 3800-4100m Jiayila Lake has a gentler ascent and more open scenery. Compared to Hulu Lake, I prefer hiking here. The scenery is all along the way, and every short walk offers a different feeling. This area is especially suitable for ordinary tourists. 🏞️ When you reach Jiayila Lake, you can take a small path to the right for more photos. 🚌 Depart at 12:30 PM to return to Chengdu. Without unnecessary stops, you should arrive around 9-10 PM, assuming no traffic jams. ‼️ Pay attention to the departure time at noon. Leaving too late can be dangerous when crossing Balang Mountain, as fog often forms there at night. When the city's neon lights are obscured by smog, I encountered the entire Milky Way on a grassland at 3,800 meters above sea level—at that moment, I knew this trip to Western Sichuan would become the brightest memory. Why go to Western Sichuan? I have always longed for the snowy mountains and Tibetan culture of Western Sichuan, but was often deterred by the "long journey and altitude sickness." Until a friend said, "Autumn is the gentlest season in Western Sichuan," I finally made up my mind to spend 3 days and 2 nights heading straight to Jiaju Tibetan Village in Danba, Ganzi, and the Siguniang Mountain area to see the legendary scenery "more magical than Switzerland." Day 1: Chengdu → Danba · First Encounter with the Tibetan Village’s Lively Atmosphere Transportation: Take an early bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station (about 6 hours direct to Danba County), then charter a car to Jiaju Tibetan Village (30 minutes on winding mountain roads, with layers of colorful forests outside the window). First Impression: Tibetan stone houses built on the mountainside, yellow walls and red roofs look like an oil painting under the sun. An elderly woman at the village entrance handed me hot butter tea, warming me to the core. Activities: Climb the viewing platform for a panoramic shot (recommended after 4 PM for soft light), watch the cooking smoke blend with distant mountains at dusk. Tips: Mountain roads are winding; if prone to motion sickness, prepare medication in advance; there are guesthouses in the village, book early during peak season. Day 2: Jiaju → Siguniang Mountain Shuangqiao Valley · Entering a Snowy Mountain Fairy Tale Transportation: Early morning chartered car to Siguniang Mountain (about 2.5 hours), first stop Shuangqiao Valley Scenic Area. Story Moment: I met a Tibetan boy who helped a tourist retrieve a dropped camera; he smiled and said, "The mountain god will bless those who love photography," which made me feel a closer connection to this land. Tips: Large temperature difference inside the scenic area; bring a windbreaker even in summer; those with mild altitude sickness can rest and acclimate at the valley entrance. Day 3: Siguniang Mountain → Chengdu · Farewell Under the Starry Sky If you wake up early, you can capture the fairyland of morning mist swirling around the mountains near the hotel. On the way back, stop halfway up the mountain; after nightfall, the Milky Way is clearly visible, and long exposure on your phone can capture star trails. Returning to Chengdu late at night, my heart stayed between those snowy mountains and Tibetan villages. National Day/Autumn foliage season is crowded; book tickets and accommodation in advance. Signal is weak in some areas; download offline maps beforehand. Respect local customs: Do not casually photograph Buddha statues inside temples. Three days is short, but it made me rediscover the purity of nature and the warmth of people. 【Itinerary Guide】 The biggest worry during long holidays is traffic jams. In the previous two self-driving trips to Hulunbuir and Hainan, we successfully avoided congestion. In sparsely populated areas, even with a large influx of people during National Day, you can still find less crowded attractions. So this time, we chose a few places: Shangri-La, Western Sichuan, Gannan, or Xinjiang. After reviewing some online recommendations and considering that flights to Chengdu are the most cost-effective, we finally decided on a self-driving small loop in Western Sichuan. Regarding clockwise or counterclockwise routes, there is much debate online. Personally, I feel counterclockwise is better when traveling with kids, mainly for two reasons: 1) Clockwise usually starts from Chengdu directly to Xinduqiao (if only going to Kangding, there’s not much to see on the way), the distance is too long, and it is strongly recommended to go from Honghaizi to Xinduqiao, not via Zheduo Pass (more on this later); 2) Counterclockwise gradually goes from low altitude to high altitude, allowing an adaptation period. 10.2 (Day 1): Shenzhen - Chengdu - Dujiangyan Stay: Yuelanli S Hotel Darongcheng Branch We stayed in Dujiangyan mainly because with kids it’s hard to get up early, and waking up later helps avoid the heavy traffic of Sichuan A-plate cars. Yuelanli’s decoration is quite basic, the materials feel cheap, and the breakfast is average, so I don’t recommend it. The main reason for choosing it was the nearby large shopping mall, which made dining and supplies convenient, but later we found the mall’s food options were limited, mostly hot pot. 10.3 (Day 2): Dujiangyan - Maobiliang Viewing Point - Siguniang Mountain Shuangqiaogou Stay: Chengyue Mountain Residence Shuangqiaogou Scenic Area Branch When traveling with kids, you need to allow extra time as various situations can arise. We planned to leave at 8 am but ended up leaving close to 9. The first half of the trip was smooth, but after passing Balang Mountain Pass, traffic jam started because many cars stopped by the roadside at the popular Maobiliang viewpoint. The 8 km from Haizigou to Shuangpinggou was the longest traffic jam I’ve ever experienced while driving—what should have taken 15 minutes took 5 hours. The jam started at the entrance of Shuangpinggou Scenic Area, where heavy traffic occupied the two-lane road. The design here is really poor. The day was exhausting, and at night I suffered altitude sickness with headache and diarrhea. 10.4 (Day 3): Siguniang Mountain - Danba - Jiaju Tibetan Village Stay: Guilan Xiaolu Homestay You don’t need to stay inside Shuangqiaogou Scenic Area. First, the homestays inside the scenic area are poor in quality, expensive, and non-refundable. Second, the shuttle buses on the way are often full. The shuttle bus drives fast on winding roads, and combined with altitude sickness and no seats, it’s tough. The road from the homestay to Siguniang Lake was the longest bus ride of my life; I was sweating cold all over and collapsed on the ground after getting off. Even after more than an hour of oxygen, I couldn’t recover. In October, Shuangqiaogou in Western Sichuan is not particularly stunning, and with this huge traffic jam, I definitely won’t come back during long holidays. After Shuangqiaogou, there were only three traffic jams, each about half an hour. The road from Danba to Jiaju Tibetan Village runs along cliffs, so those afraid of heights should drive carefully. Tonight’s homestay shows careful attention in its decoration and courtyard layout, and the bedding is very comfortable, comparable to a five-star hotel. Jiaju Tibetan Village is worth spending a whole day. Hiking and taking photos at the No. 3 viewing platform is very peaceful and relaxing. The altitude is just over 2,000 meters, making it a great stop for mid-trip adjustment.
